thegamezmaster
Having a problem with my 7800 ps. I think there is a problem with one of the wires going into the gromet. Are these repairable? Or anyone else have a problem like this. If this is the wrong place for this please move. I appreciate any help, thanks!
thegamezmaster
Is it possible to take one apart? Can anyone help or does this need to be moved to the Hardware section? Is it possible to take one apart? If so would a moderator please do so? Thank you.
AtariBrian
I would say just order another one from here . You could put a thread in the wanted section or try ebay . I think Best Electronics sells new old stock but he does have a 20 dollar minimum .

Jinks
Yeah it sucks they have their own special connector.. 30yrs later apple uses that same idea for all their iphones!! Got the consumer buying countless chargers!! I think you can hack the power supply.. people on this forum have done it and added a different jack on the 7800 side.
thegamezmaster
My problem seems to be were the double wire goes into the gromet or the big rubber piece that goes into the power supply. If you wiggle it, the power goes on and off. Any ideas?
Jinks
Solder joints broken.. open 7800 and inspect.. maybe reflow the joints with a soldering gun.. if you know how. If not dont as can screw it up..
AtariBrian
I dont think hes talking about the jack being loose . I think if you have issues with the power supply itself just get a new one ... not worth all the headache .
Jinks
Oh sorry.. your cord has a loose connection at the ac adapter end.. If in doubt.. throw it out!
thegamezmaster
Thanks for all the replies. Is it possible or how do you open the power supply? No screws and seems glued shut. Would like to fix if possible, cheaper of the two options for me and my situation. Thanks again!
Jinks
Non serviceable if no screws. If you wanna ghetto it you can try cutting the plastic with a knife. And reconnecting the cord by cutting some off and reconnecting. Most common reason is people like to wrap these up tight and the cord gets damaged. you need to always leave slack on the end at the adapter before wrapping up. Do all at own risk!!
thegamezmaster
I don't wrap my cords tight. It just seemed to get loose where it goes into the power supply. Don't know how or why.

gilsaluki
These power supplies can be opened and repaired (but you risk cutting yourself with a very sharp object). I opened a sealed Atari 800XL PS long ago (because the wire failed at the grommet). I had to slowly cut along the seam. It was not easy. I used a hacksaw, not very precise. A powered cutting wheel would work. But go slow, don't cut too deep and nick the transformer winding or it's all over. The PS I repaired is still in use 10 years later. But oh, I did nick my thumb doing it, blood everywhere. STUPID! Atariguide sells them for $15 new, shipped.
