Old Skool - Intellivision Cartridge Release

Recommended Posts

Played it more a little bit the other day... definitely a fun and challenging game. Glad I took the plunge. :)

Also, I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but I like the spelling change from Skool to School. Seems more appropriate and professional. Thanks!!

BTW, underscoring William's point above: Economies of scale are an amazing, fickle thing. For my own upcoming release, I was quoted pretty much the same price for 1 cartridge label as I was for 2000 labels. This isn't an exaggeration.

Ok, it's also not 100% the case due to a technicality. Due to quirks in my label supplier's quoting system, their prices aren't monotonic. It's cheaper to buy 2000 labels than to buy 375, for example. The prices for all quantities are in a narrow band, though, over that entire range, as the cost is dominated by setup/NRE, not the material itself. But anything you buy and do not sell, you have to eat the cost for.

An inspecific example using round numbers: It might cost you $2000 for 100 units vs. $3000 for 200 units of something. On a per-unit basis, your price drops from $20/unit to $15/unit. But, if you only sell 110 units, your effective cost per unit went up to $27/unit and you're behind the curve. I picked round numbers that don't specifically correspond to any aspect of the process as an example. I've seen these sorts of economic tradeoffs present themselves again and again, though, whether it's boxes, labels, PCBs, overlays, cartridge shells... you name it.

Fortunately, Elektronite and LTO have worked well together to share the costs on common hardware (shells, PCBs, boxes, overlays) to limit these effects and still bring out very high quality releases. It's truly been a pleasure being a part, however minor, of all these releases.

And yes, I got a smile out of seeing my name in lights in the Old School credits. Thanks for the nod. :-)

The way I see it, a majority -- if not all-- of these new games would never have gotten past the imagination phase if not for all the work you and others put in over the years. And in my case, to you specifically, considering all of your help going way back to I think Zombie Marbles and Shape Escape. The intro_to_cp1600.txt file for years was my bible, because I couldn't remember the difference between mvi, mvi@ or mvii! A game credit only costs a handful bytes. How much would I actually owe you if you charged by the hour? ;) It's mainly because of you that my childhood dream has come true.

I just read all your posts and want to say thanks to everyone for your positive reviews. Yes, the game control is not the greatest I'll admit. For that, I apologize. But it does the job reasonably well. It was written as my first real attempt to program a game for the Intellivision, and if you saw the code you would shake your head at it. But it works. Not a real excuse, but there you have it.

When Will suggested releasing it, I was hesitant because after what we had in Kroz, it paled in comparison. I mean, really paled. However, he thought it was worth releasing and proved me wrong. So again, thanks for all the positive things you said about the game. It was very nice to read, very rewarding to have one's work appreciated.

As a side note for anyone interested, somewhere in the depths of Old School is a disabled routine that lets the man push boxes around the maze. I disabled it because I wasn't happy with the way the boxes moved and if the bad guys were too close, the boxes would move right on top of them and all sorts of frustrating stuff would happen. But that had me thinking of making a new game, programmed properly, that would allow the man to interact not only with boxes, but switches, and any other object I could think up using a simple but comprehensive set of flags. Kroz was originally meant to be a redo of what is now Old School. It's of course evolved since then, but the mazes and ghosts in Kroz are very much a hold over -- at least in theory if not entirely in code -- from the Old School mazes and its 'bad guys'.

It's at the very least an interesting curio for an Intellivision collector. It happens to be a pretty decent game too. Certainly the controls are challenging but they are not to the point of being too frustrating. The fast speed the game plays at makes up for it, makes it feel rewarding when you are exact with your timing. There are even some strategies like switching back and forth between rooms to reset the baddy locations. Are the enemy movements random or is there some logic behind it?

Old Skool is now also played in Austria as it was delivered right now ;-) Thanks for the game, KnechtRuprecht (ha, a german nick for a Canadian), thanks for the extra label and the release, William  Now, please release a box and a manual as nice little topping for this fine release...

Ok cmart me vs. you - I only got to beginning of stage of Floor 3 with like 1,238 points so you should kick my ass lol:-) I actually f'd up on my 2nd go around on FLR 3 - need to figure out what to do with that lever - I wasn't paying to close attention and quickly lost 3 guys on what could've been a decent game:-( Anyone know what that "white piece" you have to get is before exiting floor? My niece thinks it is a letter - she's probably right, just wanted to be sure. Haven't played in a week but definitely a fun game. Off Topic: cmart who do Isles and Nucks take at #5 & #6 in draft? Glad noone behind us won (especially TOR) dropping us down a slot.

Hey Joe, I didn't do much better, mid 1300's I believe, I'll have to check. Made it to third floor twice, got wiped out pretty early on the first try, did a bit better on the second. The more I play this the more I like it. I'm really not sure why there was any hesitation releasing this, while it may not be as impressive as Kroz, it surely would have deserved a full release in my books.

As for your hockey question, we can discuss in PM as I owe you a response on the other thing. :)

I'd love to. Anyone up for going in on 50 CIB copies?

I'm not keen on losing money on printing up boxes/overlays and manuals, but if someone wants to kick in, contact me at gamesforyourintellivision@hotmail.com

The 'white thing' is the term paper.

The coins are 'lunch money' that the bullies have shaken out of the nerdy hero. The hero is out cleaning 'chalk brushes' for the teacher, and the bullies are roaming the hallways.

The nerdy hero Poindexter, sometimes (but not always) can pick off a bully with his chalk brushes, and he sometimes (but not usually) can slip by the bullies in the hallways.

Well, if the printing happens, I would also love a box, manual and overlay! Just sayin'...

If the game doesn't get released CIB (No one steps up) the game will never be released on cart again.

People 'waiting' for CIB copies is not a good strategy in the future, and probably not even now.

If enough people commit, could you still profit by selling box/manual/overlays packages without the carts? I'd buy the accessories, but not if I had to pick up additional carts. A downloadable color manual would be awesome in either case. :-)
