Lauren Tyler
I'm using visual bAtari Basic and I tried copying and pasting the Hello World program I saw in the forum, and it said it compiled, but when I tried to run it, there was no .bin file. Did I do something wrong?
+Gemintronic
Could you attach the .bas file you made? Pending that, copying and pasting the contents of the message log in VisualbB?

+Gemintronic
Compiles for me, dawg. Try creating a new project. Make a new directory off of your C drive called "C:\Dev" Go into VisualbB and create a new project under that C:\Dev folder. In the default.bas file that VisualbB creates cut and paste your existing hello world code. Save, compile and run.
Lauren Tyler
I'm trying and this is what I get: Compile started at 2/1/2014 11:03:01 PMCompiling C:\Dev\HW\Hello World\HelloWorld.basPost compilation files deleted But I don't see a .bin file anywhere. Do I need to do something with my settings?
+Gemintronic
Did you check in the "C:\Dev\HW\Hello World\bin" folder? Also, there's this weird thing where the binary as .bin appended to the end so it looks like: HelloWorld.bas.bin instead of what you'd expect like HelloWorld.bin If you've got Windows to hide file extensions (which most people do) then it may LOOK like HelloWorld.bas in your \bin folder. +Random Terrain
And if you have your favorite emulator set up, all you have to do is press the run button and the program will compile then run in your emulator. You don't have to go looking for the .bin file in the bin folder unless you plan to post it or e-mail a copy to a friend or whatever. If you are getting an actual error message saying that VbB can't find the .bin file, the answer is here: randomterrain.com/atari-2600-memories-batari-basic-vbb.html#troubleshooting
Lauren Tyler
After a little directory tweaking and what not, I got it to run. To think I'm learning how to program by writing Atari 2600 games. Hey, I dreamed of doing that when I was a child! XD
+Gemintronic
A piece of unrelated advice: Every time you make a successful change to your game save it as a new file: jumpman01.bas jumpman02.bas etc.. That way if the last change doesn't compile right you've got somewhere to go back to. ..it's kinda like the "save often" RPG rule

RetroFiends
I noticed that your directory "C:\Dev\HW\Hello World\bin" has a space in it. Try changing the name of your program and it's directory to helloworld.I don't know why, and it's not consistent, but spaces in sub-directories will cause strange things to happen with compiles.
