Pulled the trigger, bought a Wii...so now what?

I was actively reading the posts about the discount Wii systems, and I literally had the Wii Mini in my shopping cart twice over the holidays, only to return it to the shelf. I am aware of the limlitations, so I decided to hold out for a minty older system. I was under the assumpution that as long as it isn't a Mini, it has backwards compatibility...but looking online, it would appear some of them do not, even though they look almost identical (white, different labeling horizontal vs vertical). I have yet to open the box as it was quite an impulse buy, but it's basically never been used, so complete in box (plastic baggies, whole nine yards)...it was the Wii Sports bundle, with one joystick and the one game. I have yet to look closer, so if I didn't get a backwards compatible system, then....DANG :D ...I paid $100, which I felt was fair as that's what the Minis were going for (well, after taxes and such, maybe a bit more).

As I pretty much bought the thing to play the sports games and other fun titles (read: games my wife would enjoy!), I do think this system will scratch my nostalgia itch as well as I've read a lot of the posts here with the 'games to get' lists.

If anybody has some links to good threads, or even better, would like to list out the 'must have' retro games for the Wii, I'd appreciate it.

While I don't think I'll go too overboard with the system, I might decide to pick up some of the Rock Band stuff as I always found those to be quite fun with the right people. The last of the Guitar Hero games I bought for my PS2 back in 06, and those were the only modern games I had for that system. I currently still trying to find a minty SNES, so the Wii will fit right in.

Any tips, advice, that kinda stuff? I have to locate another controller (ebay?...I see that the Wii U uses the nunchuk, maybe I can find something in a gamestop) as well. Maybe a list of the fun Sports games (Resort, that kinda thing)?...thanks again, gents! (and ladies, I'm sure there's one or two here :D )

Download the home brew channel on a sd card using letterbomb. Load into wii. Download the homebrew browser for the homebrew channel this is done on your pc. With the home brew browser download the emulators, done on your wii. Download rom files on your pc and put the images onto your sd card in the proper folders for each emulator. And then put the sd in your wii and play pretty much any game from any classic system there ever was on your wii for free.. example 2600,7800, coleco, c64, atari 800, nes, snes, n64, mame, and so on.

Cool, never even thought of emulators. Not that I'm big into emulation but we were trying to softmod an XBox to do MAME, but with help from guys here I got it working on my PC. I'll try it out!

Regarding joysticks, do the new Wii U sticks work with the Wii? I see some nunchucks out there that are branded Wii U, but look the same. Just trying to find some original stuff before it all disappears...do retailers like Walmart or other box stores still carry official Wii products, or just what's left over?

It actually just switches to progressive scan mode in compatible GameCube games. It doesn't upscale them.

So rather than display as an interlaced 480i game, compatible GCN releases instead display a progressive scan 480p image. You have to enable this though just like you would on the real GCN system since the setting in the Wii menu only enables 480p in compatible Wii titles and doesn't affect BC. And that means holding the green button down when booting a game as I recall which it then remembers (And you set 16:9 in compatible games via the in-game menu for games with that feature since the 16:9 Wii setting also has no effect on GCN games).

Upscaling/upconverting (And deinterlacing when necessary such as with Resident Evil) is what the HD successor the Wii U does to Wii content in order to output it at your selected HD resolution.

Light gun-style games that are awesome:

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles

House of the Dead: Overkill

House of the Dead 2 & 3

Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (FPS, but has a very well-done light gun mode)

Otherwise, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is fantastic - probably my single favorite game of the generation (in the top 3 at least), and my favorite Metroid Prime game.

Wii Motion+ is not used by very many games, so while it's nice if you want to play those, it's definitely not "necessary" to get a ton of fun out of the Wii.

Right on, I'm slowly getting there in my understanding...this is the problem of getting into this system so far down the line, I don't even know about controllers!

An emulator question...are these comparable to your run of the mill emus, or are these the 'virtual consoles' that were available for the system through the nintendo online site? And since the wii online eshop doesn't exist anymore, how would one go about getting those virtual system games? Not that I'd want a lot as I have the majority of retro systems, but I've heard the SNK games were quite good (Samurai Showdown, Metal Slug).

The Wii online shop is still available and lots of Virtual Console games still there.

You will need a Classic controller to play some of them.

Some of the homebrew emulator also let you use a GameCube controller. Some Wii games can also use a GameCube controller, Super Smash Bros. does.

How about Data East Arcade Classics, the Wii's only exclusive classic arcade compilation of note? Geometry Wars is another that will scratch your classic gaming itch.

I think they're homebrew rather than the official Nintendo programs when you install Homebrew Channel and get something like a SuperNes emulator on there.

As already said, the Wii Shop is alive and well. You will probably need to use a credit card though since points cards have all but disappeared at retail for the Wii.

And with Homebrew Channel installed, you can just pirate Wii DLC files and install them. So that will be your avenue in the future when the Wii Shop is taken offline someday if you need to get that stuff on a new Wii.

I've thought about doing the whole homebrew channel for my Wii but am afraid of bricking it. Wonder if I should just try to find a cheap used wii for this, maybe one that has BC for GC since my current one doesn't.

Plus if I screw up this Wii and my daughter can't play Just Dance with her friends, I'm a dead man :D

Don't remember where I read it, Probably a couple of years ago. I guess it could have been erroneous information. Can a Wii actually be bricked or am I worried for nothing. Anyone confirm?

Pretty sure it can be. But if you follow proper known methods and procedures for hacking it, you shouldn't have any issues.

Does anybody know if the currently marketed Wii U Remotes are anything different from the Wii Remotes (that include Wii Motion Plus)? Reason being, they look identical...although the Wii U ones work on Wii, and obviously the Wii Remotes don't work on the Wii U.

The Wii U ones are even five bucks cheaper than the Wii specific ones...who knows why, even the guy behind the desk didn't know.

It's the OCD in me that wants the 'Wii only' Remotes, but if they're the exact same thing (for cheaper, nonetheless) then I might as well go with the Wii U ones.

Any help? Thanks, dudes.

They're identical, the only change is the Wii U branding on the box itself. Nothing differentiates a Wiimote with integrated Motion Plus from before the Fall of 2012 with one afterwards beyond the labels on the box.

Even the markings on the Wiimote itself stayed the same.

Yeah, that makes no sense. Are they two different colors? Perhaps the Wii branded versions are black while the Wii U branded stock is white?

And since black Wii U sales dominate, that store has cut the price on the white Wii remotes to help them sell?

nd obviously the Wii Remotes don't work on the Wii U.

All Wii remotes work on Wii U. There aren't Wii remotes and Wii U remotes. There are only Wii remotes.

Even non Motion Plus Wii remotes work just fine on the Wii U. For starters, the vast majority of Wii software played via backwards compatibility mode couldn't take advantage of Motion Plus. Secondly, you could buy a Motion Plus dongle to turn a regular Wii remote into a full Motion Plus Wii remote.

And lastly, most compatible uses for Wii remotes on the Wii U for actual Wii U software don't even require Motion Plus. Motion Plus only does any good for motion. So games that can utilize Wii remotes but don't take much if any advantage of their motion capabilities don't mandate that a Motion Plus equipped Wiimote be used.

Examples include the following...

-Games where it's held sideways like a NES gamepad (Examples include New Super Mario Bros U and Wii U Virtual Console NES downloads).

-Games where it's used in conjunction with the nunchuk for what amounts to conventional analog stick/button controls. Some also utilize the pointer function of the Wii remote which Motion Plus doesn't enhance (Examples include Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and the Call of Duty games respectively).

-Classic Controller enabled Wii U games (An example is Super Mario 3D World and the upcoming Super Smash Brothers 4 and Mario Kart 8 which support the Classic Controller as an option. The Wiimote is only used for sending the tethered Classic Controller's inputs to the console and its motion capabilities aren't utilized).

There's no sense mandating Motion Plus Wii remotes in such cases so they don't. Unless the Wii's motion accelerometers are called for in some significant way, there's absolutely no reason to mandate that a Motion Plus equipped Wiimote be used.

  • 4 weeks later...

I picked up a nice Wii with BC at my Goodwill for $13. No controllers, but I just used the second controller from our other Wii. I've been wanting to softmod my Wii, and now I've got no excuse. Is there a trusted walkthrough somewhere that elaborates on the process Jinks described?

There is supposed to be some incompatibility with a few of the Homebrew emulators that don't like certain versions of the Wii remotes with built-in Motion Plus. Many of the more popular emulators were patched after this was discovered. You shouldn't have a problem with any licensed software.
