iian
Hi I completely appologise for posting here as my first post. I'm just steadily getting more into my 8bit stuff recently and happened to come across an 800 and an 800XL. I would like to keep the original 800, as I like the looks and it feels chunky, but the image output of this not as clear as the XL. It has shadowing aross to the right on white text, pretty badly infact. I also find the audio is a lot quieter and not as crisp as the XL. The XL on the other hand has an occasional vertical image blip, it's hard to describe, a few lines role in just a limited vertical space on the screen (i.e. not all the way top to bottom), role for a split second and then it's fine. The audio and image are much clearer. Both are over RF/PAL. The XL also has an extra box at the base of the RF leads near the unit. I don't suppose anyone has any ideas? Caps maybe? Many tia,
+bob1200xl
It's hard to tell a poor modulator from one that is just out of adjustment. Can you look at the video on a monitor instead of a TV? The 800 normally has very good video. The jump in your screen on the XL doesn't sound like caps - more like bad connections or ICs. eeun
When I got my second 800 last year, I was concerned the video quality was quite poor compared to my first one. I stripped it down, cleaned the whole board with water and a bit of ammonia and blew it mostly dry with compressed air. Reassembled after a couple more days air drying, and the video was just as good as my first 800. Possibly it was just the act of re-seating internal connectors rather than the cleaning that did the trick, but all that cat hair and cigarette stink needed attention regardless. In short, a good rummage around its insides might be all your 800 needs.

RickR
That 800XL blip could be a failing power supply. Be careful if it's the solid w/ no screws "ingot" power supply, as if it fails, it could damage the computer.
