Hi Yurkie,

I received the nes. Great mod job! I am having an issue with it and using rgb with my xrgb-mini. Think its my cable that is connected to my xrgb it has sync stripper on it. I ordered one that doesn't.

But console works fine with s-video and composite.

Thanks!

Hello. I'm obviously new to this site. I signed up after finding this thread! I have questions regarding RGB on N64.

Now, I recently purchased a modded N64 with RGB. It has an nus cpu 03 board and the seller claims he used the THS7314 with a dip8 adapter method. It arrived on Saturday and I was excited to use it. I have a fairly new 50 inch Samsung HDTV and I use this rare but affordable Chinese SCART to HDMI converter. It works great. It's featured in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS55pmLIEjA

Even 32x games like Virtua Fighter look vibrant and crisp! The Sega Saturn looks excellent.

Anyways, on to the issue. I attempt to plug this sucker in with my trusty UK SNES SCART cable, turn it on and...oh geez. It's dark and muddy. It reminds me of a slightly improved composite output, but really dark. A little like using a cheap S-Video cable on a bone stock N64. I was furious. Even Perfect Dark with its 640x480 option still looked blurry and dark. It absolutely baffles me that older 3D games like Virtua Fighter on the 32x or Nights on Sega Saturn look sooo much better. So naturally, I suspected either this wasn't modded with RGB at all or this guy just did a poor job. I'll admit, I don't know much about the actual installation process of RGB (Hence why I'm here), but something seems off.

He claims that it'll vary from set up to set up. He also says that using an xrgb mini is the only way it'll look good. But I just get this hunch that it would at least look fairly decent with the current converter I use, with the reasons stated above. So the bottom line question is, did this guy do a poor job or do you really need to use an xrgb mini Framemeister?

You said you have a UK (PAL) SCART cable that you use with your (NTSC) SNES? PAL cables have 75 ohm resistors and lack the 220uF caps that NTSC cables have. Your PAL cable on your NTSC N64 console could be your problem. Try buying this cable, which is wired for NTSC consoles:

I'm no expert though, so my apologies if I steer you in the wrong direction. Any further questions and you might make a new thread rather than clutter up Yurkie's thread here. Welcome, and good luck!

PS - I didn't watch the whole video, but chunk that Chinese piece of crap and get a Framemeister!

Actually, I gave the modded console a second shot and it ended up looking fairly decent. I guess I was just slightly underwhelmed at first, but that could have been because of the following reasons. 1.) The LED modded controller he supplied with it wasn't working correctly 2.) The console had a cold smoky smell to it. So naturally, I was pissed and didn’t have time to evaluate comparisons. The seller has since agreed to fix the controller if I send it to him and claims he doesn’t smoke (must be a used console he modded). My SCART cable is an NTSC actually.

After airing it out (I even stuffed the thing with dryer sheets), I was able to notice it was considerably better than both composite and S-video. Fairly bright as well! I know most Chinese converters are a piece of crap, but this was a hidden gem. Like a less than mediocre rock band pumping out a big one hit wonder song. The end part of the video is what matters.

I'm very interested in an xrgb mini, but got kind of scared away when I found out it has some input lag. I know most upscalers do and I'm aware the XRGB3 has a mode called B1 that supposedly has no input lag. How do you guys fair with it? It sucks enough when an HDTV already has input lag when you plug a console straight in the av. I was playing Mario Kart 64 and steering was a pain in the ass. The timing of my jumps on Super Mario 64 felt off too. I tried this on my Samsung HDTV and a Sony Bravia. Oddly enough, my best friend’s older Samsung HDTV doesn’t seem to have input lag as bad.

The Framemeister introduces around 20ms of lag, which is less than a frame for a 30fps source. Input lag has never been a problem for me, ever. Your TV, however, will interlace a 240p signal which will make it lag. You can find more info on the XRGB-Mini wiki:

Oh yeah, bump for a great modder! I spent the last 5 days off playing my NES, and it was incredible. Must have played dozens of games, from gems (RCR, Zelda) to turds (Chubby Cherub anyone??). The NESRGB held up perfectly to my NES playathon. My hands... not so much. They're damn sore!

It's an issue to some people who play fighting games. Some of them time their moves to the exact frame so a frame of lag would destroy their pattern. The only games I've ever noticed lag having an effect were Guitar Hero and Punch Out.

It sounds like the Framemeister actually overall reduces lag when using modern TVs.

When I play a game like Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on PS3, the timing feels really funky. But when I play Super Street Figher II on my Sega Genesis with a CRT, I can fire rapid Hadoukens with Ryu easily.

As for the XRGB mini, would someone mind uploading Goldeneye 007 with their preferred settings? If that looks pretty decent, I'm snagging one immediately!

Goldeneye looks like a million bucks, in fact every game I have tried does. I have been really busy with mods, but when I get some time I am looking forward to playing Spider-Man on the N64

So I have my eyes set on one. I live in the US, do I need to purchase a special plug adapter or is using the included Japanese power supply fine? Should I also purchase a SCART to Mini adapter?

The current SCART cables I use:

Trickle.

I am guessing your talking about getting a Framemeister. It comes with a JP-21 RGB to 9 pin mini din adapter that can be used with JP-21 RGB cables.

I have a write up on cables in post #1 of this thread, I don't want to get into recommending cables.
