Rick Dangerous
I have to give a shout out to this gentleman: http://electronicsentimentalities.com/InstallationServices.html He did a killer job on my 7800. The TIA 9 switch is well worth the hassle of switching off for 2600 games as it clears up the picture for the 7800 games a lot, no interference! My 7800 picture is the best I have ever seen out of an Atari System and I would say looks better than my NES right now, the standard toaster model through AV hookups. Thanks again, Joe! Great job!! -Rick

bikeguychicago
To the both of you: Did you opt for the gold plugs or the nickel ones and does one really make much of a difference over the other? Thanks!
Rick Dangerous
I will have to check my receipt when I get home but I don't think I opted for the gold plugs and honestly I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference. Definitely ask for the TIA 9, and he will clean the cartridge slot for no additional cost (but I think you have to ask.) I also wiped my 7800 recently (since it is plastic) with one of those armor all wipes.....The thing looks brand new. Just throwing that out there Edited March 3, 2014 by travistouchdown
Lynxpro
I haven't modded mine yet but my rule of thumb for analog connections is to always go for gold.
Rick Dangerous
I haven't modded mine yet but my rule of thumb for analog connections is to always go for gold. For it to make a difference you'd also have to go for the gold plated RCA cables. Even then I've been told the difference is really negligible... Mine looks stunning through the silver RCA ports. Like so good that you notice game glitches or defects more (especially on 2600 games) because the picture is so good. The difference between rf and RCA is like 8 track and CD. Highly recommend the mod for any 7800 owner, though soe might prefer the grittier look of the rf out....
Rick Dangerous
Upon closer inspection I did opt for gold...lol. But I'm not using gold plated RCA cables and I can't vouch that it's worth the extra 10 bucks. Couldn't hurt I suppose...
Trebor
To the both of you: Did you opt for the gold plugs or the nickel ones and does one really make much of a difference over the other? Thanks! Gold does not corrode-oxidize, but nickel will do just fine as long as the system is not under intense humid/moist conditions for long periods of time. Gold can 'wear off'. I went with nickel as it matched the system better and I'm more concerned with the quality of cable used rather than whether the connector is gold or nickel. I rather spend the money on higher quality cable(s).
Rick Dangerous
Good point! Gold does wear off.. I have the gold rca jacks but honestly I am using the cheap rubber/plastic RCA cables that have been sold at radioshacks since the beginning of time. I had a audio/video engineer once tell me that the "high-end" cable game was a racket because they make huge mark ups for what is the ever so slightest of difference, picture quality wise.. I mean it's a 7800 you won't be getting HD out of the thing.....
Trebor
I had a audio/video engineer once tell me that the "high-end" cable game was a racket because they make huge mark ups Internet puts a stop to that: http://www.monoprice.com/Search/Index?keyword=rca+composite+cable Excellent place to buy all sorts of quality cables at great prices. Even the highest end of RCA/Composite: http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603 Honestly, I'm more concerned with interference. When you have multiple systems running composite out all tied together through various switch boxes on top of the power strips being close together or even intertwined due to space constraints, lower quality cables may cause sound and picture garbage, besides having lousy end connections which easily fall out or/and are loose fitted. Rick Dangerous
Yeah it's becoming quite an issue. Especially with most modern TV's having only one RCA in and like 9 HDMI inputs lol. I just plug my systems in one at a time when I want to use them because I'm worried about picture degradation using a multiple input box.. There we go.. http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10241&cs_id=1024101&p_id=660&seq=1&format=2&utm_expid=58369800-11.R-enhtUGRrSdHz5vzpVS2g.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monoprice.com%2FSearch%2FIndex%3Fkeyword%3DRCA%2Bcable Edited March 4, 2014 by travistouchdown
Trebor
I'm worried about picture degradation using a multiple input box.. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032ANC8M/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=atariage&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0032ANC8M&linkCode=as2 Four inputs - Two outputs - Composite and S-Video plus you can daisy-chain as long as you use decent cables. No picture degradation utilizing the boxes with decent cables - even daisy chained - I own two of them. You can setup seven consoles that way (One input from one box needs to be utilized as taking in the output from the other box for the daisy chain). Make a little "cheat sheet" for each input, either right on the front, above the switches, or on top of the unit and you're good to go. On sale currently ~$19 each - buy two of them and you get free shipping to boot. No more swapping out consoles.
Lynxpro
Has anyone here connected their consoles to a TiVo in lieu of a VCR in order to hook them up to a modern TV?
