Tempest
I have a modded Xbox that I got off a member a few years back. It has a bunch of stuff on it I don't really need or want (copies of sports games, console emulators, and whatnot), so I was thinking about zapping all of that and putting Coinops on it but I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I'm also not 100% sure what mods the Xbox has on it, but I'm fairly sure it has a larger hard drive (from the amount of stuff already on it) and is running the original 'Blades' dashboard. Anyone have a guide for installing CoinOps (the newest version) and tips on what dashboard I should be using? I have access to a PC with Windows 7 and Ubuntu, but I also have a OS X laptop and an XP laptop.
Rex Dart
Original original Xbox, right? If it has a "blades" interface, that's not standard, so it sounds like it's running XBMC in place of a dashboard. If so, that's my preferred setup, and I would stick with that. You should be able to find the system's IP address in the menus and connect to it via FTP; they're usually set up to have the username/password as xbox/xbox. Kyle22
I use XBMC on mine. If it's a softmod, make sure you backup your EEPROM data. I used Auto Installer Deluxe. Google it. I am still in the learning phase of this myself, so I really can't give you much help. I used CHIMP that (I believe) came with A.I.D. to install a 500G drive, and that worked well. I use WSFTP to connect to the XBox, and it works well. Any FTP client will, it's your preference.

Yeah it's an original Xbox with the blades style dash on it. I didn't know if the original got it or not (I remember it from the 360). I'll look into the FTP setup. Tempest
I just had a little heart to heart with my Xbox and found out these system specs: Dashboard: XBMC 9.04-SVW Hard Drive Space: 232 GB!!! (system reports 238230 MB free) Memory: 39MB Free (I assume this means I don't have the memory upgrade). These a bunch of stuff on the HD that I want to zap and put CoinOps 5 on it. I found the IP address so I'm going to try my hand at FTPing CoinOps over. If I want to zap what is already there should I do it from XBMC or through the FTP somehow? Tempest
Everything you need to know about Coinops is here http://coinopsproject.freeforums.org/coinops-6-f57.html Except for an install guide. I found one on Youtube for CoinOps 5 lite which I'm hoping will work for 6 (they should be the same minus some game roms).
Hatta
If you want to zap your hard disk entirely, use Auto Installer Deluxe. It's just a few button presses to get back to a virgin state. That's a full format Does CoinOps really need an "install guide"? Copy it over to your hard disk and run it like any other xbox software. I just want to get rid of all the extra stuff on it, I want to keep the dashboard and everything. There are some questions I had that I needed answered like where on the HD do you install stuff? My drive has several partitions.
Rex Dart
On a drive that size, I imagine it's all in f:games and f:emu. Just peek in there with your FTP client, delete what you don't want, and copy over what you do want. Don't let the folders scare you, it's as simple as MS-DOS. So there are no dedicated partitions for anything? Where are the dashboard files? Those are the ones I don't want to disturb.
Rex Dart
Ah... it varies. There is likely an .xbe in C:/, with the rest of the files someplace like F:/apps/xbmc C: is your dedicated system partition, E: typically holds save data in /tdata and /udata, D: is reserved for the DVD and F: is generally where l33t h4x0rz install games/emus/apps. SiLic0ne t0aD
Thats what mine is as well, F drive.. Im running Unleash X. I bought mine modded already for dirt cheap a few years ago, 200GB hard drive installed. Already a bunch of xbox games, movies, music, emulators .. even porn on it lol. I would like to add some more emulators and roms as well. I'll have to look into the CoinOps...
Tempest
I updated XBMC yesterday and that went well, so I'll do CoinOps tonight once it finishes downloading. One thing I don't like about CoinOps is that it's not just an arcade emulator as the name implies, it's actually a whole bunch of emulators. I'd personally just like to get a nice port of MAME for the Xbox, but I can't seem to find a recent one and CoinOps seems to be the only one that is updated. Is there a version of MAME for Xbox that's still maintained?

Rex Dart
Sure, MAMEoX exists, but it's not maintained like CoinOps is. Still, it works.

Well I suppose I can strip out all the emulators I don't need and basically use CoinOps as a MAME emulator.
Tempest
Ok I got CoinOPS 6 moved over last night and it seems to work well. Two more questions though: 1. Before I zapped everything my Xbox had some Xbox games on it (stuff like GTA 3), how were these loaded on? I wouldn't mind having one or two Xbox games on my system, but it's not a deal breaker if it's hard to do. 2. In CoinOPS, it there a way to access the dip switches for games? Some of them have the difficulty cranked up awfully high.

They're simply dumped out into the F:\games folder, usually, so that the structure to the game's executable is F:\games\yourgamestitle\default.xbe You should be able to pop in a game disc, then go to the file manager in XBMC (or whatever dashboard you use) and copy over the files from the disc. There's no "install" really, just copy the files. Edited March 23, 2014 by Rex Dart

I wonder if my modded system can read burned discs? Only one way to find out I suppose.
cimerians
You can grab DVDtoXbox and have that program do it for you. Emuparadise has a bunch of rips already too.
