TXG/MNX
Hello, After JSII went down I am trying to contact Jay Smith is there anyone who can help me? When you are in touch with him, PM me, I send you my e-mail address that you can forward to him or PM me his email address.
NinSEGA
Odds are he doesn't want to be bothered, especially after all of the stress he had to endure. Even if you do manage to get his email address, don't expect a response. I do hope that most of the site was archived, though.
Gulfman
What happed with JSII then? I often see people mentioning things on here about the hassle, etc. What's the deal with it?
NinSEGA
What happed with JSII then? I often see people mentioning things on here about the hassle, etc. What's the deal with it? I may not be entirely correct, but it may have went something like this: A self-proclaimed autistic user over there pursued legal action against the site's owner and other users over being singled out over some recent purchase (or sale) he had made in their marketplace. The user was infamous for starting debates and would read into every sentence literally, which made it very difficult to have intelligent discussions. Jaguar Sector II was eventually shut down due to this. If anyone feels like adding something for clarity, that would be much appreciated. I don't want people to be misinformed. EDIT: See post below for a better explanation as to what happened. Edited April 14, 2014 by NinSEGA
NinSEGA
Okay, I managed to find a better and more detailed explanation as to what happened- "Well, basically (and there's a few different sides I'm trying to make fit together), Jay was already kind of tired of running the website, but was still running it because nobody else wanted to do it. Then a fight broke out between a couple of members over an eBay auction for one of the homebrew games, and the one who had set up the auction felt he was being unduly harassed and asked for his account and all his posts to be removed from the site (there's apparently more to it than what we saw go off in public, but I don't want to get that far into it). So Jay takes the site down for a couple of days and removes all this guy's content, then puts it back up. Then, inexplicably, another forum member copy-catted the first and also asked for all his posts to be removed. Since Jay was kind of already on the edge regarding the site, having two requests in a row like that just sent him over, and he decided it was better to just take the site down entirely than leave it subject to that kind of behavior." +remowilliams
If anyone feels like adding something for clarity, that would be much appreciated. I don't want people to be misinformed. Close, but not quite there. One mindbogglingly huge asshole JS2 member (aka 'a community leader', 'a smart fellow, and basically a good guy') threatened Jay with utterly batshit insanely moronic 'legal actions' regarding his 'content' and 'trademarks' Then another user tried to pull a similar act. Even for a man who was used to dealing with mental cases for many years, this apparently proved to be too much for Jay.
Gulfman
Sounds pretty much like one '?END' spoilt it for everyone then, shame I never got to see the site. Edited April 14, 2014 by Gulfman
NinSEGA
I only saw parts of the site briefly, but never got a chance to delve into what they had uncovered/discussed/etc. And then one day when I went to it again, I was greeted with the doom and gloom message. 'Tis a shame.
ovalbugmann
Oh wow ok, so that's what all happened over there, I finally find out today, should have checked my Reddit post sooner. I just now looked at my question, which was the same as Gulfman's that I posted on reddit.com/r/jaguarsector/ asking what happened at the now infamous Jaguar sector for Jay to close it down. I had actually gotten an email from Jay/management over there late in 2013 asking where I've been and inviting me back on the site as a valued member. I didn't make it over there though, came straight back to my AA group. lol Remo, your breakdown of events is hilarious dude! sh3-rg
You have to also put the events into the context of similar happenings over previous years. There were several users in the past who demanded all their posts be removed from js2 as they emoragequit the site. One user even did this a second time after requesting he be able to re-join.When two other users demanded the same (in 2013?) it was stated that it would never be allowed again. But the user agreement seemingly did not cover ownership of posts and other content, or it was at least ambiguous, and when that "smart fellow, basically good guy" made his tried and tested legal threats, there was nothing to do but acquiesce and endure the tiresome headache of removing yet another user's content.Clearly, this then being followed by another user's copy-cat demands was the straw that fucked the camel* You can imagine the lack of free time to be involved in the site and having to leave it up to others to manage for periods of time and the site going from probably being self-funding with memberships, releases and other store items with a large user-base to dwindling active users, spam accounts a-go-go, little to no new store content to keep things ticking over, resulting in it costing money to keep the site open, then all the "extra" business leading to any involvement being of a purely hassle-based nature... well, it's not difficult to see why someone might get to the point where closing the doors seemed like the only viable solution. It is unfortunate because, for all the nonsense that went on in the past, things had very much turned a corner. It's just a shame that it seemed to be a much more active place when releases were sparse but drama was high, and when that turned on its head it often seemed like nothing but tumbleweeds left and right... probably why, as Oval said, they went to the trouble of prodding past active/productive users to participate once again. "Proppa"'s failed attempt at creating a utopian Jaguar empire (of course, ruled by the iron fist of a heroic Autobot) probably did the site no favours, just created further fractures. But at least resulted in the absence of one or two of the worst offenders in the drama creation stakes.* ©Sheri.S.Tepper, Six Moon Dance.

CrazyChris
I can understand deleting a post or two, but every post, is ridiculous. Doesn't the poster have any responsibility for what they post? Chris
+remowilliams
Doesn't the poster have any responsibility for what they post? Apparently not if: A) They are mental patients and B) You let them get away with it
NinSEGA
Maybe they should have mental stability and adolescence tests before allowing new users to post. Then again, I'd never be allowed to post here.

Technically you're not allowed to post here anyway, but your new account hasn't been blocked for some reason.
JaguarGod
I usually do not comment on these types of situations, but I just wanted to say that personally, I loved JSII. But it did get very strange at times around there with some folks. I did not have a lot of time for the site over recent years, but always checked in when I could. It is really a shame because most of the people on the site who contributed positively or just loved to speak with other Jag fanatics were good people who were just excited to talk about what was going on in the Jag universe. I met a lot of people over the years in person at Jag Fests and other small shows, like the CCAG show, that I originally met on JSII and forums that preceded it.

T2KFREEKER
Well, you are one of the people that has first hand experience, so your reasoning on reddit is a pretty good, non biased explanation as to what sadly happened. Just saying. Edited April 17, 2014 by T2KFREEKER
