This is a pool to vote the best games ever for Intellivision :-)

There will be several pools of 5 titles each to cover the following categories:

- Best game of all time

- Best sport game

- Best shoot'em up

- Best arcade conversion

- Best producer

1st AND 2nd classified go to round 2!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I post all togheter the learning games and all the remaining family/board games because, as a matter of facts, those are not tuff contenders for the overall best price so we will have more places in the next pools.

Lot of comments to post here:

I never tried the children games, so I cannot judge, but I consider the chess a very good rendition of the game.

I don't know about US, but Reversi was extremely popular in Italy at the time, even more than chess, checkers or any other board game

Sharp Shot for me. The WarioWare Inc. for the Intellivision.

As Nintendo repeatedly shows, for a Mini Game compilation to work it has to contain very strong source material.

The Mini-game compilation of Mattel draws from Football, Space Battle, Sea Battle and ADD. Mattel manages to make to capture the essence and the fun of the source material and showcases it in such an accessible manner… Almost 3 decades before than the Touch Generation! Revolution.

Some months ago we had a thread about a game that we can play and share with our children: Sharp Shot was at the top of the list.

* Yawn *

Went Math Fun just because, as a kid, I truly did sharpen my math skills on this game so it served its true function. Never really enjoyed Sharp Shot as much as it's just pieces of other games (most of which I already had!). I really don't want it to win as it's not a game of it's own ... but likely will cause its the most fun of the group.

Strange to have these games in the same category -- I'd put the five Strategy Network games together instead, though Utopia would win in a landslide -- and with Chess and Checkers included, Sharp Shot feels out of place.

Anyway, I picked Chess, because it's an impressive achievement on the system and plays quite a decent game. My #2 would be Reversi.

One of my classmates tought me to play chess in 5th grade. I begged to get it - my parents wanted me to wait until Xmas but I got boardgame soon after and enjoyed it a LOT. I didn't have for inty BITD because it was like $45 or so and I preferred to get 2 other games instead. My vote went to Chess based on my affinity for the board game and all the good things I have heard from other people.

Yikes, the voting turnout on this one is rather lame. Where is the love for Word Fun? :)

I went with Word Fun because among the choices, it was the one my brother and I spent the most time with. Is it a great game? No. Is it even good? Heck no. It's barely even a game!

Is it entertaining to a 10 year old that gets to make dirty words on the screen with the help of a monkey? ABSOLUTELY.

'sides, I could never beat the computer at Checkers or Reversi, and Math Fun was frackin' annoying.

Sharp Shot was basically TV-POWW. Meh.

The rest (Chess, Learning Fun I/II) we didn't have.

I went for Math Fun because I actually did enjoy it as a kid. It was hard to convince my sisters to play with me (since I was the nerd of the family), but I played it quite a bit with my father.

I actually read the manual and played (most) of these games this weekend. It came down to Chess and SShot. In the end, Chess is more than just another chess game with the custom sets you can create and the use of unique functions on both hand controllers. I think this is the best chess game of the generation and deserves to be recognized.

OToH, Sharp Shot is a really nice showcase of Intellivision action. Ultimately the very low difficulty and lack of complexity puts it at 2nd for me in this group.

wongojack, I voted for chess but haven't played that in ages - can you describe "custom sets feature" you spoke of - really curious. Thanks.

The game lets you set up a specific chess board and then play the outcome of that specific setup. There are unique functions across the two hand controllers that allow you to manipulate and sort of level design your own chess scenario. This is the only game to my knowledge where the overlays show unique options on each hand controller (I'm begging someone to correct me on that).

I also appreciated the way they described the difficulty levels and how it results in longer deliberation by the computer - they even give you a button to force the computer to choose a move if you get impatient.

It really seems like this was not simply a port of Chess, but they really put some work into nuancing the options and the interaction that a single player could have with the game, taking advantage of the additional buttons on the hand controllers. Just taking the time to read through the manual revealed that they weren't lazy about this one really at all. All that being said, I was able to start a new game and begin playing chess without reading a single word of the manual. Sometimes the action games even require a quick look just to get started (looking at you Auto Racing).

Also with this group, I was reminded that Word Fun does not work on INTV II. That slowed down my analysis and eventually worked against it in the rankings. Checkers felt pretty lazy compared to Chess.

wongojack, WOW - thank you so much for the detailed analysis of Chess. I didn't get as a kid because it was like $45+ so I preferred to get 2 other games (don't remember) since I had a Chess Board. I was NOT aware of custom feature you described and I love the fact that you can press button to make computer move if you got impatient.

As for another game that definitely has 2 distinctly different overlays and for "good" reason - Swords & Serpents comes to mind because Overlay for Wizard (has all spells on it) is completely different from one for Knight. If I'm wrong on that I apologize and feel embarrassed as I'm going off memory and didn't do quick check prior to posting.

Joe.
