My own Dragon's Lair Cabinet...Finally!

Haven't started the troubleshooting yet. It powers up, but doesn't play the game. I was told by the seller that the LDP is not working, but that is all they said. I bought it from an estate sale. The guy I purchased it from's father passed away. He had a vending machine business. This was one of his many hobby projects. He also had a Mach 3 cockpit cabinet that works for sale….and cheap!!!

Benny that is a truly awesome game you have there. Please keep us updated on the progress of the restoration and don't forget about the KLOV forums for help in trouble shooting and parts. Please provide pics. of the restoration if you can. Good luck  .

Will do! It is certainly going to take some time.

Very cool! I hope you can get that baby working ASAP. Keep this thread updated for sure.

Brian O. is helping me move it in to the game room today. As soon as it is in the house, I am starting the rehab project. I hope it goes smoothly. If not, it is all Shatner's fault! :P

Awesome nice find! You could always use an old PC or xbox to play Dragon's lair. But at that point it's a mame cabinet

I've always wanted a four player Cyberball.

Funspot has gone that route with all their laser disc games. I guess there's a lot of problems with the players.

I have looked into that route, and it does come with some drawbacks. The versions play very different IMHO. I am striving to keep it running on an LDP, but if I have to convert it, I like this option much better (though it is not commercially available yet):

Running DL off RaspberryPi would be freakin sweet! I could turn all of that newly found free space in that cabinet into a beer cooler!!!! :lolblue: (jokes everyone...just jokes!)

So, thanks to Brian O., the cabinet is now in my game room. It was not fun to lug that thing up a flight of stairs and through my house, but it is in.

Thank you Brian O.!!! I couldn't of done it without you!!!

I have done my initial run through, and here is the good:

  • All parts are inside the cabinet and getting power
  • the speakers work
  • the monitor works and has no screen burn
  • the scoreboard seems to work (numbers came up during the self-test)
  • the marquee art is almost perfect (other than dirty)
  • the cabinet is in decent shape
  • the LDP powers up, but I am not sure if it works properly yet
  • the laser disc was included and is in good shape
  • everything is original
  • serial # 1929 - sticker on cabinet and stamped into the wood as well
  • cinematronics label is still on the coin door and is in great shape

Here is the bad:

  • the metal control panel is bent to hell, as it looks like someone tried to pry it up and get at the coins
  • the control panel is also missing one of the 4 bolts
  • the CPO was peeled away in certain areas (must replace)
  • the plexiglass over the monitor was carved into and also burned with cigarettes
  • the scoreboard has a sticker on it
  • the LDP does not seem to play…further testing needed
  • the bracket for the PCB is damaged and needs to be fixed in order to house the board properly
  • the lock on the back door is broken
  • the vinyl on the sides of the cabinet is peeled and torn at the upper corners
  • the T-moulding is shot
  • the coin mechs don't light up and I am not sure if they work at all (there was a spare coin mech inside the cabinet, which may be a clue).
  • it's fairly dirty
  • side art is completely gone, but I can print that at my work for barely any cost!

More to come in the days ahead!!!

Damn that is sweet.

I know a local dude whose pride and joy is a Thayers Quest running on original equipment.

As a fan of the game (and of a many laser disc games) I just think he is awesome!

I can only hope to be as awesome as you are some day bennybingo!

Right now I just want to get my GORF working. LOL

Best advice…keep looking on craigslist as often as possible. They do show up from time to time, and once in a while you can get one for a good deal. I waited a long time to find this one for the right price…a VERY long time.

Update:

So the LDP is shot, but everything else seems to work perfectly. Now I just need to find a working LDP…which might be as challenging as finding this machine was.

On the upside, i am learning a ton about this machine, and arcade cabs in general. I think I am creating a monster!!!!

That is real nice,I have good memories of watching and playing that game. I was a little too young to witness the long lines of people waiting to play a single arcade game in the arcades but I do recall some lines or crowd of folk around a Dragons Lair cabinet.

Simply jaw dropping it was, I hope you get it 100%.

Hey Benny do you know if a 1450 LDP will work for your Dragons Lair? I only ask because I am not familiar with the LDP's compatibility over certain games. I know the 1450 works for a bunch of games, but not sure for Dragons Lair.

I have a list of players that will work with this particular DL board (Rev. 2), and 1450 is not one of them. It is a fairly short list, but I have my eyes on a couple of potential replacements already. I will keep you updated...

This thread shall be legend! All the best in your pursuit of Dragon's Lair perfection. I can't stand using my Digital Leisure versions on my DVD player: even on my PS2 with a joystick, the game just doesn't play like it should. You will definitely NOT have that problem when you're done! Good luck, and keep the pics a comin'.

I just spoke with the owner of LaserCon. They manufacture a product called the Merlin Board. It allows the DL machine to use a more modern (but still vintage) laserdisc player…one which works quicker and is less fragile. It also allows you to play both Dragon's Lair and Space Ace discs!!! BONUS!

I already ordered a newer LDP and, if it works, I should be up and running in a couple of weeks. Then, I can focus on the cosmetic elements of the restoration. That I can do over time. I am really happy I pulled the trigger on this cabinet. So far, it has been a fun and extremely educational process. Quite unexpectedly, the DL cabinet is very easy to work with…even a complete tech-retard like me (I fear the thought of soldering anything) can understand the basics of the internals. I just hope it keeps going this smoothly!
