Just Got A 3DO!

Recommended Posts

Really excited! I ended up finding a 3DO FZ-10 locally for a heck of a price. The system is in mint condition, and came with two controllers. The original Panasonic controller and the Capcom fighting pad, which is really hard to come by. In fact, I had the same pad for my SNES when I was young, so its nice to have it again.

I also got the original cords as well as four games with all manuals and boxes. I got the long box version of Road Rash, Star Fighter (really looking forward to this!), Gex and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. And there's a ton more I still want to buy, so I'll be looking for those soon.

Still, for a start of a collection, I think I did great today :). I can't wait to plug this all up and get playing. I'll post pictures later today :).

A great find with 4 great games! Congratulations!

As for the USB adapter, as long as your 3DO read discs... It's good to know that the 3DO have no region lock and no copy protection... ;o

That is true, but slightly faster load times are a nice side effect of the USB. It's not substantial, but it is better than optical.

yep, but for 199$, compared to the numbers of CD you can get for this, I think that for most people and knowing the system, it's a better deal to stick to CD.

For a more successfull system like the Playstation, that would be a better solution indeed. But, in this very case... Well I think it depends.

I like my 3DO and play this beast every now and then; but spending 200$ for playing the 10/15 games I enjoy on it so far? Even if the CD drive die on me, getting another 3DO will still cost me less.

But heh, that's my feeling about it. Would it cost 50 bucks, I'll get at least one just in case. 90$? I might still be interested.

And the loading times aren't that long. On the other hand, I suppose it remove the slight freeze that some games get, and that must be comfortable indeed.

Yeah, the USB or Hard Drive mod that StoneAgeGamer offers is awesome, and I've been wanting to get the mod done, but justifying the cost is tough.. There's no way I'd be able to solder the tiny points required without screwing something up, so I'd have to pay to have the mod done for me, which makes it even pricier. Like the above post, there are maybe 10 or 15 games I truly care about that I'd bring out the system to play (maybe less in my case, actually). Maybe I should stick with CD-r media, or legit copies of some of the few games I like.

3DO FZ-10

mint condition

two controllers

Capcom fighting pad

Road Rash

Star Fighter

Gex

Super Street Fighter II Turbo

Very nice! The best version of an interesting console (does yours have S-Video out?), a good pair of controllers, and four of the top games on the system. I'm tempted to pull mine out of consosleep again....

It can be a bear to install, but this makes the ultimate FZ-10! http://www.stoneagegamer.com/3do-usb-adapter-panasonic-fz-10.html

You need to pick up Return Fire, one of the best multiplayer games ever. A ton of great games on the system, even if people lament the amount of FMV games. You'll love it more the deeper you get into the library!

wish it worked on fz-1

It's not a cheap mod and certainly using CDR media is an easy and cheap alternative, but there is something about having the entire library on a single drive and available at all times. It keeps me from needing to pull the games out of the long boxes each time I want to play them, so it's a great option for me. That and I know that eventually the drives will die, so having an alternative to that makes me feel better about the console.

I wish it would work on Goldstar units, considering they are notorious for disc drive problems.

Out of stock currently, but here is the Goldstar model of the mod. He's supposedly working on a version for the FZ-1 as well.

Thanks everyone! Really surprised by all the interest in this. I think I'll keep this stock. It's in VERY nice condition, and frankly for 200 bucks I could buy every game I'd ever want, haha. That and the FZ-10 is the most reliable of the three. In fact, I don't think they're even known to have issues. The front loading mechanisms though of the Goldstar and the FZ-1 are pretty common, especially with the Goldstar. I'd stay away from that one.

I like the FZ-10 so much. Been playing it all day. It loads really quick, is quiet, has a great build quality, and I don't have to worry about its reliability. Plus, it has a PC Engine Duo-esq look to it, which makes it look really nice in my opinion.

This one is in great condition, and I still can't believe I got this for a hundred bucks.

I believe all 3DOs have S-Video out, along with composite and RF. They're not proprietary, just any male to male cord will do, which I really like about the system. The only difference I can think of between the three outside reliability is that the Goldstar and FZ-1 have a front loading CD mechanism, and the FZ-10 is the only one that came with a controller without a headphone jack and volume control built in. However, the FZ-10 will use FZ-1 and Goldstar controllers, and the volume/headphone jack functions will work on it.

ANYwho, as promised, here are some pics!

You'll spend about 120-150 (that includes shipping) anymore for one now a days. More if you get games with it. Goldstars can be gotten for cheap, but that's because no one wants them as they're very unreliable.

That's what I saw on eBay, they seemed pretty pricey.

Yeah, but it's worth it. Honestly, haven't felt so much excitement from a classic console that I had no nostalgia from since the Sega Master System. I honestly can't believe I missed out on this originally. It kinda ticks me off, because I would have totally supported this console if I knew more about it back then.

They sold about 5 million units world wide, and people tend to keep these things. That's why I think their value seems to be fairly high. The good news is that most of the games are pretty affordable. I know it can run burned games, but I really don't feel the same towards having a burned disc. There's something special about having the real thing in its original packaging.

Thank you for sharing that. I actually wanted a 3DO back in the day when I saw the commercials but my parents couldn't afford it. I wish I had gotten one at the time too. I'll look into it, would be nice to finally get to experience it. I agree, I'd rather have the original games in their packaging, a burned disc wouldn't feel the same for me, I want the full experience.

I have one FZ1 with no S-Video out, and looking inside, not even a place to solder a S-video plug.

About reliability, I always heard that the FZ1 is very reliable. The FZ 10 seems to have some laser issues but it's still reliable, unlike the Goldstar units.

I wasn't really aware of the system until I was in middle school. By then the system was gone. That would be really awesome to finally get what you couldn't have when you were a kid. I had a similar experience with the Sega Saturn. I wanted one so badly, and begged my parents for one but I never got one. By the time I had saved enough of my own money to buy a system for the fifth generation, the Sega Saturn was gone, so I picked up an N64. I loved the N64, great system, but I still kick myself for not being able to have a Saturn back in its hayday. I still remember drooling over screen shots of Sonic R and Daytona USA in gaming magazines, haha.

That's interesting, hadn't heard anything bad about the FZ-10. It's always the one people say to get. The FZ-1 isn't bad though, not by a long shot. It's the Goldstar that's trash.

Btw, I'm curious if you could tell me when your FZ-1 was manufactured. There should be a sticker on the bottom. I've seen video on youtube showing FZ-1 units with S-Video in the back. I'm curious if many they added the feature later on in its life and wasn't there at launch, or maybe they took it out to save cost later in its life span. Very interesting stuff.

Btw, how many people do we have here with 3DOs? I wasn't aware it had much of a following on this site, but it seems I might be wrong. Any games you guys recommend? The ones I'm interested in that I don't own are listed below:

Need for Speed

Samurai Shodown

Rebel Assault

Wing Commander 3

BC Racers

Crash N Burn

Sailer Moon

Samurai shodown

Off World Interceptor

Primal Rage

Bust-A-Move

Space Ace

Lemmings

Mega Race

Battle Chess

Novastorm

Battle Sport

Policenauts

Olympic Soccer

Quarantine

Burning Soldier

Operation Starblade

Similar to what I have said in other threads . . .

One of the best games on the 3DO is Star Control II. You can download the 3DO version of the game and play it on your computer for free if you want to try it before you buy it:

sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

Speaking of things you can play on your PC, there is a good 3DO emulator now. You can try out games before you buy so you won't have to waste time hunting down games that suck:

www.fourdo.com

I loved Shanghai: Triple-Threat. One of the variations reminds me of the Connect 2 free online game that I have on my web site. Click here for YouTube videos.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Slayer was cool because of the random dungeon generator. Talk about randomness and replayability. Click here for YouTube videos.

The Horde was fun for a while. Click here for YouTube videos.

Theme Park is worth owning. It was my first amusement park game. Click here for YouTube videos.

Need for Speed was pretty amazing-looking at the time. Click here for YouTube videos.

I kind of liked Quarantine back then, but it's hard to go back to now since it's so blocky compared to the games of today. It's like a futuristic Crazy Taxi with guns. Click here for YouTube videos.

I had a sampler with a Captain Quazar demo on it. The little I got to play of it made it seem like the game might be worth owning. Click here for YouTube videos.

If you like platform games, then you'll probably love Gex (starring Dana Gould). Click here for YouTube videos.

I became aware of the system when it first came out, I was in the 6th grade. I remember seeing the commercials and thinking the games looked really cool, in particular Jurassic Park. I had a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo at the time so I was excited about the next big thing. It was too pricey, so my parents didn't get it for me. My dad got me an Atari Jaguar 3 years later, it was cheaper and on its last legs by then, but the library left a sour taste in my mouth. I also had an N64! So it would be cool to finally get a system I wanted back then but couldn't afford, at least for the experience if anything. And it sounds like it has cool games and quite the following.
