How necessary are overlays?

I will be receiving a modded "YurkieVision" in the near future, and since my funds generally do not allow for complete games (just loose carts), I was wondering: how necessary are overlays for ColecoVision games? Are the games virtually unplayable without them? Or do overlays merely provide aesthetic appeal and quality of live improvement for playing certain games? I'm wondering if picking up loose carts and just reading scanned manuals online is enough, or if I should really be hunting for the overlays as well.

Cheers!

The overlays that exist are needed but there are not a lot of games that have them.

There is a thread where someone is selling reproduction overlays for every game that had them. You could buy a set of those and then you would have the overlay if you ever got the game.

Yep, and they're not extremely expensive either, as long as you don't mind owning repro overlays.

To answer the original question, for most of the games that originally came with overlays, using the overlays is highly recommended. WarGames is a little hard to play without the overlay, Dam Busters also comes to mind. I can't imagine playing Ken Uston Blackjack/Poker without the overlay in the controller, same goes for War Room. Also, let's not forget about Super Action overlays, which are all VERY useful when playing with Super Action Controllers, more especially the sports games.

There are a few games where overlays are a little bit overkill, like Spy Hunter, Mouse Trap and 2010, but they're still somewhat useful.

And then there are those games that didn't come with overlays but really should have, like Gateway to Apshai and Quest for Quintana Roo. I myself created some homebrew overlays for those games and people seem to appreciate them. :)
