John_L
Having had alot of experience using Motorola 8 bit chips before, I wasn't too worried about the 2600 figuring the 6507 was similar, and it is, but then I ran into the whole "hey, we need 75 percent of your 1.19 MHz processor's time if you're wantin' like, um.. video output, and ... um... what RAM?" RAM??? We don't need no steenking RAM! Not to mention a baker's dozen of address lines.. etc. It never ends... or more precisely, it never really begins. The thing I learned was that my idea of a minimal system was way too generous for what we have to work with here, and it was interesting to learn how limited the system really was. What I did know was that years and years of obsessive detective work has made up for what the machine lacked, and what it was capable of being extended both through software and hardware. As a fan of the Tandy CoCo series computers, I know what first hand that sort of thing can produce. It's nice to see an active and vibrant homebrew community out there, along with all the useful tools to make life easier for potential developers.
iesposta
Nice post. That is what keeps me coming back. The fact that so many seemingly impossible and fun things can be done with so very little machine designed in 1975/1976.
