ataridave
Let's say I got a PAL computer, like the Oric Atmos, and pluged the RGB cable into an NTSC monitor that supports RGB-would the RGB cable convert the PAL signal into NTSC?
roland p
No, but if your monitor supports 50Hz, you'll be fine. With rgb cables, PAL and NTSC only relates to the framerate (and not to the color encoding of those standards, since colors are now send by seperate rgb signals). +remowilliams
If you mean 50/60Hz conversion, no. The display still would have to support the refresh rate.
ataridave
OK, thanks! Are there any monitors that have RGB and that were sold here in the USA, like the Commodore 1084, for example, that will convert the signal?
Uzumaki
I thought RGB is typically 15 or 31.5 and not NTSC/PAL dependent?

CatPix
I thought RGB is typically 15 or 31.5 and not NTSC/PAL dependent? Yes and no. In RGBi mode, used on early arcade signals and SCART RGB signal, the picture is still 625 lines interlaced at 25 frames/sec (or 50Htz) or 525 lines interlaced at 30 frames/sec (60htz). The signal is 15 Khtz, but there are slight differences (I can't recall the numbers and can't find them either on Internet) but the difference is enough for monitors and TV to not be able to lock on a different vertical frequency than the one it's meant for. Even with a manual V-hold, it may not be enough. Recent display usually use the same chip for 50 and 60htz displays so you migh have more luck with a recent TV or monitor. ataridave
In terms of multisystem TVs, I found this one: http://www.worldwidevoltage.com/sharp-14--super-multi-system-tv-model--14d2-for-110-220-volts.html With their cheapest shipping to Denver, the total would come to $168.97. Is that a good price? I know that the screen size is small, but I do trust Sharp when it comes to CRT TVs. And I haven't had much luck on Craislist Denver. Multisystem HDTVs are easy to find, but that's not what I'm looking for. Edited June 20, 2014 by ataridave

The 1084 will display both 60 Hz and 50 Hz without any problems. I used to use PAL mode on my Amiga 2000HD all the time with my 1084S. It was connected via RGB. I now use the 1084S with my Atari 2600 and Amiga CD32, both of which are connected via S-Video. Both can drive the 1084S at PAL frequencies without any problem (though 2600 PAL games will show with the wrong colors).

Ah, I didn't recognize your username on here immediately. At any rate, the problem that I have with PVMs-at least the ones I've seen on Ebay, is that they tend to be ridiculously expensive. Of course, someone on the shmups forums would give me a better deal then Ebay, but even then, I don't know which makes or models of PVMs are the best. Also, the inputs in the back of the PVMs that I've seen photos of look really confusing. And I don't care about RGB; just composite and RF out. ApolloBoy
Try looking locally, that's your best bet for finding a good PVM.

Here's what I found on Craigslist Denver: http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/4524150638.html and this one: http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/4491237822.html I suppose that the one with RGB out listed would be the better one? I don't know anything about any of these model numbers.

I don't see any speakers on any of them, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right area? And is Sony the best brand? Because I have seen some JVC PVMs.
Uzumaki
I would love a PWM as well but locally I think they base on eBay prices. There is only 1 PWM within 100 miles of me and some idiotic clown wants $150 for the 12" monitor. I almost had a 20" PVM for under $100 but it never specified working, the owner said it works but when I got there and tried to plug it in, all I got was an impression it's possessed by a banshee, the awful racket it was making from the back told me it's bad.
