Some questions regarding IDE Plus 2.0

I've been poking around and searching, but haven't really come up with any answers so I figured this was the best place to start.

1) Does the current BIOS update work for both REV. C and REV. D?

2) Was compatibility improved on REV. D with CF cards? I have a transcend card that didn't work too well with C but seems to work with D.

3) If I want more stability from a power standpoint, can I still connect external power to the IDE 2.0 AND have it connected to an XE or will I blow something out?

Thanks!

Ok then, here's another question. I have had virtually no issues with CF cards on Rev. D. But I've had numerous issues on Rev. C with the same cards. Is there something I can do to fix that on Rev. C? I've just tried a BIOS update and that didn't seem to help.

If not, can you guys RECOMMEND a specific brand/size CF card?

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

I have one of the Rev D interfaces I believe on my 130XE. I have used a pretty wide variety of drives with mine without external power.... started with a 1.2GB ancient IDE 2.5" drive from an *OLD* thinkpad.... then got a dual CF adapter because the screen dimming was pretty annoying.

I have both a 4GB Microdrive (real HDD... just really tiny) and an old Sandisk 128MB CF card plugged into the adapter at this point and with Slave support enabled it actually works. But... when the MicroDrive is accessed I get the same screen dimming effect (though not as bad). With external power it would probably be fine.

I've got two "C" and 2 "D." All work great with everything I've got in the way of storage. My biggest card is 2 GB Transcend Industrial CF. I don't care for 2.5" drives, although they work fine (powered through the +2 power socket). But I do like and use 1.8" drives. The best 1.8" that I've found is the Hitachi. My 20 GB has the same pin arrangement as 2.5", so no adapters needed. Ultra-low power (for a drive). Fast! Fits very nicely on the IDE+2.

I was using one of these (which I've currently "loaned out"), but it worked great with IDE Plus 2.0. No need for firmware updates, since it just interfaces the SD card with the IDE protocols internally:

Oh, and I still have one of these, which plugs straight into the IDE connector and does the exact same thing:

I love IDE+2.0

It's simply perfect.

But anyone knows that 65 kbytes of extended 130XE memory is insufficient for IDE+2.0 working perfectly with it's all sophisticated drivers.

I hope that we need ALL memory onboard on IDE+2.0.

Really I don't know is it possible.

But a chance...

What's about new revision?

128K Ram should be OK - it's SpartaDos that likes plenty of RAM, the actual IDE +2 footprint is practically nothing, IIRC it has some internal RAM which it uses for buffer + workspace and the internal ROM doesn't intrude at all - the beauty of the PBI model is that by design the driver ROM can overlay the FP ROM when it's needed.
