7800 XM update

Curt Vendel

Recommended Posts

I bought into this project at the beginning and I still hope it gets released, but the doubters were proven right years ago.

With some of the 'doubters', I would re-label, "relentless killjoys", intent on destroying any heart the creators had in making such a project at all costs. And not so much proven right, as they got their miserable, insufferable, dark wish of joy.

To be fair, what the victims did or didn't post in a forum had no effect on why the project has taken more than half a decade since money changed hands to reach the point where we may actually be close to a finished product within the next year. While I agree that many of the types of people who frequent boards like AtariAge often have unrealistic demands and it may contribute to projects dying in their tracks from overly sensitive developers or "bad press" in general, this is clearly not one of those cases.

Most people have no idea how close Curt was to throwing in the towel due to the negative posts. I know of at least a hand full of AA members, I've kept track, who did not pre-order the XM and have no intention of ordering it, yet were some of the most vocal critics of Curts handling of this project. What would their motive have been since they are not "victims"? DracIsBack's statement might be a bit dramatic but it's not far off track.

My point was that he didn't throw in the towel, it was other, internal forces, including poor planning and poor choice of development partners, that have doomed the project for all of these years.

Opcode and Groovybee are very talented people. I don't think anyone would have guessed they would eventually drop out when this was started 5 years ago. Maybe poor choices in hind sight. They did contribute alot to the project.

Being clear, I have two specific concerns with the XM. I think you're touching on the first. I was referring to the second.

Specifically, my concerns are:

1. I think the original developers bit off far more than they could chew; and correspondingly didn't handle it very well by making promises they couldn't keep, going dark for long periods of time, especially after taking money. I think we're aligned on this. After all, I am one who paid a deposit a half decade ago as well.

2. I also felt some posters (some who never even contributed a deposit to the project) seemed to want to go out of their way to cheer for it to fail at every turn. They revelled in causing trouble and casting a dark cloud right across the project. I mean, there were people going out of their way to try and call it vapourware that was merely photoshop and acting like no one ever did a lick of actual work on it. It's patently wrong and it was relentless at times.

Both of the things make me disappointed.

While you are right, that there has been a good bit of negativity, this project has been ongoing 5 years and counting. A lot of money was paid by the original investors, many of whom had expectations of a timely release. Yes, there has been a lot of griping and angry messages over the years, but I would say that of the people who originally paid, most have been extraordinarily patient. I can't say how many have asked for refunds, but of those who have mentioned it publicly, I can only think of a couple. I think that's a significant statement of how well regarded Curt is around here that he's been given that much leeway on this. So, while there will always be trolls, given the time frame involved, I'm surprised it hasn't been worse. He really does have the support of his investors.

This project has been ongoing for 5 years and counting. Do you really think that a bit of impatience isn't warranted? The project went dark for long periods, leaving people who spent money up in the air with no confidence that it was going to be finished. And believe me, a lot of people have asked for more openness over the years to help AVOID the negativity. I was one of them.

The behavior of the mob of haters was wrong and I'm sorry Mr. Vendel was hurt by it. But it is something of a result of the lack of communication. A lot of the drama could have been avoided by better public relations and time management. We can rightly chastise the community for being shitty, but this is not something that is solely the community's fault here. And further drama can be avoided by not making that mistake moving forward.

To this, I have to thank Tep and the others who've now jumped in to help, but also for being open about it. I would hope that those who have been negative will back off from hereon out and that we can try to be excited for the forward momentum there is now. There are enough of us who are looking forward to the XM that surely we can get a cheer squad going to keep them from burning out.

I said specifically that I was speaking of the people who did not order and have no intention to. They have nothing to be impatient about. But for those who did, your points are valid and well known. I'm looking forward to posting the update when the latest BIOS is ready and being tested. I think that could realistically be in a few months.

Just- please- be careful talking about deadlines and such. Truth be told, that's what killed it for me. All the "there will be weekly updates" followed by months of silence, or "it ships this spring, no more delays" followed by

I think even if estimates are poorly done or overly optimistic or can't forsee critical issues, the key is not to stop with the regular updates. I think that's what creates the most anger. Outside of a few jackasses, I think most people are reasonable as long as they're kept in the loop about things.

I wonder why she looks around while changing tho, rofl! :P

LOL - I like how when they show that metal object falling through the water, it's obviously in a swimming pool instead of the open ocean....
