K.Michael
I'm sure it is old news to all of you, but I recently found out that the Sega Genesis Controller works in the Atari 2600. I was just wondering whether or not this means that all the buttons are functional, and if so whether or not there are any homebrew games that actually utalise the extra buttons the genesis controller makes available. It would be insanely cool to see a side-scroller on the atari 2600 using the extra buttons (say allowing both a button for jump, and a button for fire). Has any tried to make a game using the extra buttons? I have no programming experience, and am very new to the console, so I'm just very curious. +grafixbmp
There have been several of games created to use one extra button on the controller. Princess Rescue is one of them. Some older games have been recoded to take advantage of it as well.
Bakasama
Here's a list of hacked ROMs that use an extra button. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/158430-rom-hacks-to-support-2-buttons-with-genesis-controllers/
+SpiceWare
Space Rocks and Stay Frosty 2 also support multi button controllers. Besides Genesis gamepads (both 3 and 6 button), the Amiga CD32 Joypad is also known to work. Other gamepads make work as well. Image from here. In Space Rocks you have to specify which controllers are plugged in via the menu. I learned it was possible to auto-detect the controller type for Stay Frosty 2. Space Rocks wasn't released yet, so I debated updating it to also auto-detect, but decided not to as the manual had already been printed. Mr SQL
Complex ML can be affected by the pad - KC Monster Maze breaks with a Sega pad, but a Joystick is a better controller anyway IMO for pacman type games The Harmony cart menu also malfunctions but there is a workaround to hold a button down on startup. The pad registers as a paddle so anything detecting a paddle or using the extra paddle RAM (there is more than 128 bytes of RAM onboard the VCS) could be affected.
