Want to pick up a 3DO, question

So, I have a chance to Get a 3do from a guy I work with. The system is the Japanese FZ1' with a bunch of games that appear to be American versions. My questions are; what's the difference between a US system and a Japanese one? Does it matter if the games are US versions? Will the games display text in Japanese characters? Any help from some 3DO experts would be great!

Hey,

I can answer all your questions. The 3DOs are region free. ALL games will work on the Japanese systems. Most games will work on the US systems. Only games that don't have Kanji on the disc won't play on a US system. But all of them will play on a Japanese console.

Games, if American, will display with English... like any other game :). The system won't translate them for the console's regional language. So all your American games will display like on an American system.

Personally, I think the FZ-10 is the best system. The FZ-1's can have faulty front loaders. I'd double check that it's in premium condition to guarantee you won't have problems down the road. Otherwise, the japanese models are the best. I have an american and Japanese FZ-1s and while I love them both, I tend to play on the Japanese one the most as it's completely open to any game I put in.

Hope this helped. Good luck, and I hope you get a 3DO soon :). You'll love it.

Thanks for the comments. So looks like if I get the japan system, and buy the American games I am good. CatPix, to you point, aside from the 6 or 7 rpg games that I'll stay away from, there are no American games that have had a Japanese release with translated texts? Does that make sense? I dont know enough about 3do....yet!

3DO games made in the US generally are the same in Japan. Some might have had voices changed (for instance, Gex had the voiceover changed in the introduction FMV in the Japanese version), but for the most part they are usually the same. Not a whole lot of effort went into localizing US releases to Japan.

Ok, got a fz1 coming in the ail! What r some essential games I must play??

Gex, The Need for Speed, Starblade, Crash'n'Burn, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Samurai Shodown, Dragon's Lair (if you like this kind of game of course), Wolfeinstein 3D (a PC-perfect port of the game, if you do'nt like playing this game on PC), Wing Commander III. An probably others I can't think of or never played ;)

Bust-A-Move is pretty good too. It's just like the SNES version with better sound.

Avoid the 3DO version of Doom. It is a bit laggy. For a console Doom I prefer the Playstation because it doesn't have that border and is full screen. It's worth the tradeoff for not having music. Plus it has extra levels.

I enjoyed Escape from Monster Manor, Immercenary, and the FMV games Kingdom: The Far Reaches and Psychic Detective. My wife and I enjoy playing Trip'd together now and then, though I wouldn't recommend it as a one-player game.

Avoid Jurassic Park Interactive and Shadow: War of Succession like the plague.

Yeeeaaahhhh... It's just like the SNES version, except at half the framerate (and even less when in two player mode). I generally tell people to avoid this version unless they just want to play solo. At least there it's tolerable, but it is exactly the same game as the SNES one, so you may as well play the SNES one (it isn't any less common and it always runs at full speed even in two player mode).

I agree. Trip'd just feels like it goes on forever in the single player mode. I have to force myself to quit when I have decent length sessions with it. Makes me wonder if it was intentional, or if Warp just didn't focus enough on tweaking the single player game.

Is there actually an end to Trip'd in 1P mode? I'd be willing to put the effort into "beating" it if such a thing is possible, but if not then I won't bother with 1P.

I tried taking on one of the CPU opponents, but it didn't seem like there was an end to that -- I won 4 matches to 1 and things just kept on going.

BTW Trip'd has some serious slowdown issues (at least in 2P mode), but somehow the gameplay doesn't suffer. You can really see it at the end of the round when the playfield is being cleared -- suddenly the framerate/rendering speed jumps up when enough objects have been eliminated.

I doubt either mode ends, but I haven't gotten far enough to say either way. Trip'd as far as I can tell was originally made for a mini-game compilation (Short Warp) and it somehow got its own standalone release here in the US.

The first one in the series, Flopon the Space Mutant, a Japan exclusive, I believe has much less slowdown. That one is always split-screen and it doesn't look as nice though. Kind of interesting to see and play though after playing Trip'd.

Hey, I think I have that game! Don't remember who I bought it from, though -- some jerk, I guess. ;) And don't get me started on the copy of Short Warp he sold me; because of that, I have nine kids now!

There are a good number of games to get, but the MUST haves I'd have to say are Need for Speed (seriously, still one of THE best racing games.. so enjoyable), Road Rash (kicks the Saturn version square in the rear), Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Samurai Shodown. There are other great games of course, like Space Hulk or Star Control, but those are the four I'd recommend first and foremost.

Oh, and if you're getting the fighting games, invest in the Capcom Soldier controller. You'll thank me later...

All of them are good, but I found the Alone In The Dark games frustrating to play on the 3DO for some reason. They are good ports of the PC version, but... They doesn't improve the gameplay in any way. And the AITD gameplay didn't aged well. Also, a save take a lot of the 3DO's Internal memory.

I wouldn't recommand playing them on the 3DO unless you can't stand firing a DosBox virtual machine on your PC.

They are extremely sluggish. Part 1 is tolerable at points, but AITD 2 is nearly unplayable.

I recommend:

Guardian War (turn based strategy, like Shining Force)

PO'ed (people hate it based on the first level, it gets better)

Return Fire and Maps O' Death (real time combat/strategy)

BladeForce (cool 3D free flying shooter, kind of frustrating, but fun)

Slayer (1st person dungeon crawler with real time combat)

Total Eclipse (railshooter)
