+SpiceWare
per this tweet by Coleco Holdings LLC. Hope they use VFD.
killersquirel
Wouldn't it be cool if they threw a new school lcd/led screen on it and you actually could play the actual arcade game through emulation? That would be the ultimate!
+SpiceWare
Not really, I already have multiple ways to emulate the actual arcade game. I have the Galaxian unit (thanks Keilbaca!) and the distinctiveness of VFD is the major appeal to me.
retroillucid
I'm hoping for a ColecoVision Tabletop Or, new games instead of remake of Pacman, Galaxian, Frogger, etc.. It's pointless to have a brand new remake of Galaxian when they could make new games like Berzerk, Frenzy, ...and well...so many more!

+Random Terrain
. . . the distinctiveness of VFD is the major appeal to me. Is that what they used with Packri Monster?
Hyperboy
Is that what they used with Packri Monster? Yep and the Bandai Boxing, Basketball and Football.
+Ripdubski
Prefer the old school led game for these. Thats the appeal. If they have screens with emulation ill stay away.
+save2600
Either way, bring 'em on! As flawed as these products are, some of the most exciting stuff to hit the shelves in decades!

That would be the ultimate! Those games are not cool today like they where back in the 80's when that was all one could expect. I agree 100% with putting in an LCD and emulating the real arcade. Reaperman
I'd be pretty interested in a VFD re-release, though I expect that they'll instead probably go for those kind of crappy 'color lcd backlights' excalibur games have been coming with somewhat recently. Certainly not interested in emulation. color lcd: Edited August 29, 2014 by Reaperman

I agree 100% with putting in an LCD and emulating the real arcade. I have to agree. The technology exists today to make exact miniature replicas of the actual arcade machines, not just fixed LCD approximations. Heck, it's already been done as a homebrew project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzje8tQlVik I'll all for making Coleco tabletop simulators (or even Game & Watch simulators) on ColecoVision because I think it's a quirky and fun idea, but re-releasing these old Coleco tabletops as actual retail products is another thing altogether. I honestly don't see the point, especially since the old tabletops are a dime a dozen on eBay today, and many of them are actually still perfectly functional.
ArcadeJunkie
I wonder the possibility of taking the coleco flashback and modifying it to fit and work in a tabletop??? Calling Ben heck!!!

I have a few of the original Coleco tabletops and everyone loves them as objects, even if the 30+ year old gameplay doesn't live up the packaging (especially by modern standards). The original case design with arcade cabinet art is wonderful and it would be great to see that same design in a modern tabletop. Agreed that a repro VFD tabletop doesn't have much place in today's market. In my experience, for at least the last several years the originals are definitely not "a dime a dozen." Good condition, loose, working examples average $50-60 shipped. Of course, there are occasional deals to be found, but most of the time a minty CIB working Coleco tabletop will go for $100 or more.
BassGuitari
VFD or bust. I can run arcade emulators on a thousand other devices already. Edited August 29, 2014 by BassGuitari

Cynicaster
I don't see this progressing beyond the "cool idea" stage at Coleco Holdings, or whatever the outfit is called. If you go with the primitive technology of the original units, your potential consumer base consists of the roughly 27 or so dudes in the entire world who remember these toys fondly from their youth and would like to buy new ones rather than just use eBay to pick up originals. If you go with more modern technology that uses LCD displays and emulation, you're faced with the reality that anybody who cares about the games in question is already emulating them on just about every device they own, from desktop to console to mobile. Never mind the fact that there are peripherals out there like the iCade, which are similar in concept but actually serviceable as mini-arcades, as opposed to simply being "hey, neato!" novelty devices with dinky little controls that would be useless for serious gaming. What about licensing? How is this little brand re-incarnation of Coleco going to secure the rights to market well-known arcade properties? Osgeld
vfd is prohibitivley expensive, especially for a custom screen, expect LCD, any maker in the Chinese strip mall can print them out and glue them together

goldenegg
There was a video of the Coleco Chameleon at the Toy Fair which was posted on FB this morning. To the right of the system are 2 tabletop systems. I wonder if these are the reissues, as the Chameleon is displayed at the Coleco booth. I hope they are! simbalion
It would be nice if this came true. I'd be just fine with a backlit LCD screen, whether it was just emulating the original tabletops or a full version of each classic arcade game.
