Rick Dangerous
I am looking to add primal rage to my collection shortly. It is VERY expensive for the Jaguar CD, and is best played with the pro controllers. Because of this I've been thinking of snagging it on another platform possibly. I was thinking the 32x edition might compare more favorably than the SNES/Genesis ports. Also Genesis 6 button controllers are easier to come by, and I don't feel bad tearing them up with fighting games, whereas I'd be more apt to not use Pro Controllers for a fighting game that will put lots of hard use on them. What are your thoughts on the 32x Primal Rage vs the Jaguar CD game? Any other ports I should be considering that are good adaptations of the arcade game? Thanks. I have been reading the Jag V. 32x post, which is excellent, but doesn't quite answer these questions within the greater picture of prices and rarity today. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/107368-jaguar-vs-32x/?hl=%20primal%20%20rage%20%20vs%20%2032x Edited September 3, 2014 by travistouchdown
Austin
Jag CD version, as lacking as it is, is better than the 32X one. The 32X version is barely a step above the Sega Genesis game. Super lazy port. Do yourself a favor though and buy it on the Saturn, or via the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 on the PS2 or XBOX. It's a waste of money if you are paying a high price on any other platform, IMO (which you will be for the 32X or Jag CD versions). Even the 3DO one is better than the Jag CD one and it doesn't cost nearly as much either.
Rex Dart
I've also heard good things about the Midway Treasures version. Also, don't worry too much about destroying controllers with Primal Rage.
Zerosquare
I'd be more apt to not use Pro Controllers for a fighting game that will put lots of hard use on them.Pro Controllers seem to be very durable. SCPCD has been abusing one since 1997 by playing Zero 5 (which doesn't have any autofire, so you have to keep hammering the B button), and it still works fine
Rick Dangerous
I've also heard good things about the Midway Treasures version. Also, don't worry too much about destroying controllers with Primal Rage. I actually have it on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for the Gamecube. Someone told me this Primal Rage was a "gimped Mame version." Not sure what that means but like I said would like to find the best console version of the game. Pro Controllers seem to be very durable. SCPCD has been abusing one since 1997 by playing Zero 5 (which doesn't have any autofire, so you have to keep hammering the B button), and it still works fine This is good to know. I'll be less afraid to use mine regularly if I know they can take some hours. I'm not particularly rough/abusive on controllers anyway. I have some friends however....I'm not sure how they wear down analog sticks to nubs like they do playing Smash Brothers. Austin
Not sure what that means but like I said would like to find the best console version of the game. The versions found on the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 are emulated versions, meaning they are the closest to the arcade versions as you are going to get (although in Primal Rage's case, supposedly the devs weren't able to crack the game's strong encryption and so supposedly some features and graphics act and display weird, although I'm not sure what the specifics are, it always seemed fine to me). Something else to consider is that the MAT2 versions is based on a later ROM revision, and home console ports in the '90s didn't get the extra features added in for this release. Features include being able to do moves in a Street Fighter-like fashion, among other things. If you want the best actual port of the game (not simply emulation), you need either the Saturn release, or the PC version for MS-DOS. Don't get the Jag CD or 32X versions if you are looking for something that's even remotely close to being arcade-perfect.
phoenixdownita
Or .... burn the JagCD version yourself, try it and if you like it then buy it (assuming you care enough about collecting it). Heresy .... I know!!! But I found out that the "try before you buy" that is is possible these days beats the "buy then sell" hassle.
+save2600
Another vote supporting the PS2/XBox Midway Arcade Collection 2 disc. For less than $10 shipped probably, you'll get Primal Rage and a plethora of other great games, vids, etc. to enjoy. No brainer really - unless you've just gotta have it for the Jaguar. Oh, and I've yet to see or notice any graphical glitches show up on the PS2 version, while there's a few going on the Jaguar version. Most notably, the one where part of the screen is chopped off on certain levels.
Warzard
When it was released, I bought the Jag CD version, played it for 10 minutes, then took it back and got the 3DO version. I had already played the 32X version before then and it was a no too.

Crazy Climber
Primal Rage Jaguar is more of a collection piece
Austin
So of those 3 you liked the 3do version best? Do you still think it stacks up well against newer releases of primal rage? Essentially the order of things goes like this (from the best arcade-faithfulness to the worst): MAT2 -> MS-DOS -> Sega Saturn -> Sony Playstation -> *large gap in quality* -> 3DO -> Jaguar CD -> 32X -> SNES -> Genesis -> handheld releases. Consider the gap between the 3DO and PS1 versions somewhat large (less frames of sprite animation in the PS1, but the screen moves at 60fps and the character objects are huge). Again, if "stacking up to the newer releases" concerns you, stop debating and buy the Saturn version. If you don't have one and you like games from the mid 1990s, you should probably buy one.

The brown blood in the MAT2 versions stands out, although at least the sprites don't tend to hover in midair like in MAME.
Rex Dart
**** all this trash. I played it on the Game Gear, and I liked it. Like I was gonna play Street Fighter? I wish. Still have the movelist that I ripped out of a Gamepro issue.

Felyx
Personnaly, my children an me like to play Primal Rage. I found on Youtube this interesting vid which compare the different versions of that game ported on various systems: Luckily for an easier comparison, the Jag version comes just after the 3DO one. Many people are criticizing the Jag version but when I look at this video I don't find it bad at all: why do you almost all write it is a bad game on Jag? Still have the movelist that I ripped out of a Gamepro issue. I should have noted in my personal ranking of the games that the portable versions are actually good for what they are. On the basis of what the OP is looking for though they don't really fit in the conversation. Maybe I should have left them off that list completely. IMO its probably the best fighter on the Jaguar. Overall and in comparison to the others It's just a lazy bad port that could of been much more. If you're a HUGE Primal Rage purist then you're going to go with MAME or the Saturn version. For me Primal Rage on the Jaguar combines my two loves. The Jaguar AND DINOSAURS!. Whoo hoo!
JagChris
I think High Voltage Softwre should of done the Jaguar version of Primal Rage. I think we would have seen a pretty bad ass version of PR for our Jaggy. Note to CJ: Almost used 'of' instead of have. that was a close one. ^^^ Edited September 4, 2014 by JagChris

Austin
Better than Ultra Vortek? Why so? (Best fighter I have played in the jag thus far.) Waaaaay better than Ultra Vortek. UV is shallow. Don't get me wrong, it was a good effort, but there's pretty much no depth in the game. You jump kick, uppercut, sweep like in Mortal Kombat, do some special moves here and there, and that's it. No combos to speak of at all. It also doesn't help that the game is slow and sluggish compared to the Midway and Atari Games (Primal Rage) fighters of the day. Primal Rage is fast, fluid, has loads of custom combos (i.e., requires you to know how to really play the game to get the most out of it), and the special moves are more creative. Oh, and it has claymation dinosaurs. That's got to be worth something.
Warzard
So of those 3 you liked the 3do version best? Do you still think it stacks up well against newer releases of primal rage? 3DO version was the best at that time(I didn't have a Saturn till Fire Pro 6 Man Scramble). The Saturn version is best over all IMO(for one thing, JAG's sprites were too small) .
