Neo Geo pocket color - region

Since the ngpc is region free, is there any difference or benefit to have a us version vs a Japan version? Any japanese games that are unplayable due to language barriers? I want one and want to optimize the games I can get. Any help would be great, thanks!

No, from my personal experience! I have a US & JP NGPC and both are equal to me! As far us the language barrier goes, if you do have a US version of a game and understand it forwards & backwards, then the JP version shouldn't be a problem. Just the language will be different ( I do the same with US to import games this why). Now a Japanese exclusive is different! If you don't know anything about the language, its going to restrict you from playing!

Hope this helps and post some pics of it (or questions) on the Neo-Geo thread one day! ;-)

Thanks! So if I get a Japanese console, but buy only US games, they will all display in English?

It depends on the game! Many older Japanese games are dual language because of the launch in both countries and should be fine! However, if its a Japanese exclusive, it will be only in Japanese! Also your NGPC language bios is important as well. If its set in your preferred language, then it will play on it! But if the game was programed only for that country it will not! Also many Japanese RPG are in text and are exclusive as well!

Here are the specifications on the system at are from wikipedia,

Yeah, some of the very early NGPC titles had enough ROM space to include both English and Japanese language text within. Whichever region the BIOS of the NGPC device is set to, you'll get that language on the screen. Almost all of the later titles are either English or Japanese only, not dual. It only really affects a handful of games.

This is true. You can tell which games are dual-language and which aren't if you look at the romset. It's important to note that any NGPC can be set to either language, so for those games it doesn't matter where your NGPC is, just what language you have it set to, I'm pretty sure...

Most dual-language games were released in multiple regions -- either Japan+Europe or all three regions, since there are more than a few games released in Europe but not the US (apart from getting those EU versions by mail order) -- but there are a few Japan-only games that have English on the cart too. SNK did the same thing sometimes on the Neo-Geo itself, too. On the NGPC, Big Bang Pro Wrestling is an example of this.

So I have my neo geo pocket color, and it seems to have sound problems. Sound is loud with headphones, but very very faint through the speakers. I heard this issue exists with the turbo express, but is this normal for the ngpc as well?

Hi,

The sound on the NGPC speakers isn't as loud like many wanted to be! Unfortunately, I don't have your unit to examine to see if its working correctly. But I will provide a youtube video that shows a NGPC being booted up to see if you can relate to the sound on your console! If it sounds like this one, then its fine!

Hope this helps ;-)

That sound is way louder than mine. If I use headphones, it's loud like the video though. Any suggestions?

If it sounds lower than the video, something is wrong with your speaker or sound generator! Is it dirty in between the holes? Would you be able to send it back to the seller?

They made plenty of the NGPC so getting another one is no problem at a good price!
