Help with my Rayman walkthrough

I am in the midst of my overly long and detailed walkthrough of Rayman and I have come to a part I have always been confused about. In the second level of Eraser Plains the stage is separated by a fall between two pencils. You can backtrack easily every where else in the level until you get to here. Once you fall down you cannot jump high enough to get back up. But once you continue on from here one of those ding sounds go off that lets you know something has been triggered. If you go back to the point with the two pencils there is now a pencil sharpener platform that takes you back up. Does anybody know why? I have never been able to find a reason for having access to the first part of the stage once you get towards the end.

 

If anybody knows a reason or has any idea let me know please. Also does anybody have a suggestion for what I should call those ding sounds? Right now I plan on just calling them dings.

I just recently found the pencil and eraser levels only recently in Rayman. But if you can show us on some of the play through videos on Youtube, maybe that will give some of us an idea of where you are talking about.

I think it is just an opportunity to go back in case you missed the cage before otherwise you would need to go through the whole thing again...
