Atari ST Gamer Magazine

Greyfox

Recommended Posts

Just started sending Greyfox some more 'Raw Material' for Vol 2.Nothing 'game changing, just confirmed 1 claim via 2nd source, hopefully found what happened to another 2 Lost ST Games etc, plus bit more material for various sections he might have planned.

Also put an extra 2 questions to Simon Butler regarding his work on titles under the Arc Development banner.
He's kindly responded already.I've already shared the info regarding his work on 9 Lives/rumoured Lynx conversion, from the (forthcoming) interview with him for Classic Console mag, so wanted something 'exclusive' info wise from him for ST Gamer Vol 2.
Just upto Grey know to sort the wheat from my chaff :-)

Cheers fella, I will be returning to this, now that the Atari 2600 book is complete and is in its proofing stages.

Attention for all who might be interested? I'm looking for a games reviewer to include in the new issue of the magazine, all I can offer is a free copy of the magazine and some great notoriety as been part of the ST gamer magazine team with full credits for your reviews or special features you'd like to write about and when it's complete and online maybe a few bucks for a beer or two when it throws back some revenue for the work involved , interested?

If you are, please send me a PM on here and we get the ball rolling on what's required from you, I want the make this issue even better than the first and I know that the ST is really underestimated or isn't as popular as other machines out there, I want to change this and with your help we can :)

Let me know if any of you would like to contribute to the magazine.

Thanks everybody :)

Darren.

ST still has a rather mixed reception, to this day in places, seen as the 'lesser' machine, even likes of Jeff Minter, dedicated ST mags like ST Format laid into the poor choice of sound chip and developers like Sensible Software's Jon Hare, were reported as saying:

'We've always seen the ST version as a downgrade (in terms of weaker sound, downgraded samples, smaller screen etc)'

So hopefully publications like ST Gamer, RetroGamer etc can at least try and re-adresss the balance somewhat.

Can't edit earlier post, so no, not going multiple post route out of choice, before anyone starts...

Anywho, just had an interview come back in that i actually had cancelled, lot of ST related content answered, so passed that onto Greyfox for 1st refusal for ST Gamer Vol 2, but i know he alreasdy has 3 interviews of mine in ST Gamer Vol 2 as is, plus extra 'material' from a 4th, so it might end up elsewhere.
Basically for all my 'sins' (which are many....
I'm trying to get as much fresh info out there ST wise as i can.
Hope you enjoy it, whatever the means of delivery turn out to be. :-)

The new issue is going be sheer Atari ST gaming awesomeness :) it's now starting to pick up now, as I've created the first of hopefully as many reviews we can secure for issue 2, watch out for a new threat about it :)

Again for anybody that is unaware, we are looking for contributors for issue 2 and can go here if interested.

I wonder if anyone's going to review Trantor after all we said about it? :-)

Seemed to have split the 8 Bit Press, let alone the ST press, seems best suited to the Amstrad CPC, but i watched someone complete it from start to finish on Youtube in 6 mins!.
And WTF? CPC version only (8 Bit?) version to have 'proper' plot? entire thing is in his head..guilt over flamethrowering a kid by accident during a mission? Dark man.....

I loved the intro, my mate had a 128K Spectrum (if memory serves) and this was loaded as a 'Get a load of THIS!!!!' in the bitter C64 Vs ZX Spectrum childhood wars we had as mates :-)

It was simply stunning and technically game itself impressed, monster sized main sprite etc, but after a few mins playing, i simply was'nt that impressed. It seemed very much like Dan Dare 3 in some respects, technically fantastic for what coders had achieved with Speccy hardware, but simply window dressing for an average game.
And when both appeared on the ST they simply felt out of place, should have stayed on the 8 Bit hardware, i've always felt...

Just forwarded confirmation from the very graphics artist himself (hot off the email this morning) of another 3 ST games that were sadly canned. All 3 would of been conversions and sadly he could'nt answer the question of what enhancements, if any, were planned for the ST (and Amiga) versions :-( but at least 'we' now know what became of another 3 and why.

Info forwarded to the Fox as per usual. If there's no room for them in the mag, i'll update site here after it goes to press.

Wrapping this one up:

Greyfox has now been sent everything that's likely to come in, prior to magazine deadlines.
So misc interviews, comments direct from sources regarding projects they worked on, thoughts on ST range and Atari's handling of it.
Closure on what happened to a few missing ST games, plus a few brought to the fore i could'nt see featured on most common places of interest.
Would of liked to have seen a few more from the Atari community join us with content, but i fully appreciate just how time consuming reviews/articles etc are.
I've tried to cover as many bases as possible, get widest range of industry views etc.
Of course i'd of liked to have had more, but some questions put went unanswered after inital contact, others never replied at all, a few had to restrict answers due to work etc-it happens.
So, it's all been sent, hopefully it'll be of interest and make a change from what's been covered in mainstream press, but like it or loathe it, it is what it is.

Some amazing stuff to be had, and Lost a Dragon has come through in sheds of great new Atari ST info. A lot of which has not been revealed before or host on any of the usual Atari ST or Atari sites out there exclusive only to ST Gamer magazine.

Again if anyone has the interest, we would love to hear from you, we are still looking for folk, check it out here and did we mention that everyone who gets involved get a free copy of the magazine? Plus the notoriety of been part of an Atari ST magazine in 20 years? So get in contact a.s.a.p.

Have a good one folks

Kind regards

Darren.

Bit of a thread bump, but i had'nt quite given up all hope of reaching more Tiertex ST coders/finding out what happened to a few more Lost ST games etc, when i discovered that Mark Haigh Hutchison had sadly passed away in 2008 (RIP) aged 43.... :-(

Mark had worked on ST: Thunderblade, Highway Encounter (never released) as well as an unfinished Game Gear title.
Always the risk this, when i'm nosing around looking for last few people i'd like to contact, only to find they passed away and you were'nt aware of their passing until now....

Are there any plans for a printed edition? I've bought the PDFs for both issues, but would still enjoy reading a printed edition.

I'd happily buy a Falcon Gamer or Jaguar Gamer mag as well, if they were ever produced.

Firstly a huge thanks for taking the leap and faith in the magazines that you've purchased them, your support as well with everyone else who purchased has been amazing and made it all worth while blood, sweat and tears making it.

A physical version...hmm the problem here is page count = big expense at the printers, we had a very limited print of Atari Gamer magazine , one which was based on the Atari 8-bit with a world exclusive of 30 copies, at a page count of 62 pages of content, cost 17 per issue :( so with dropping the advertisements in the ST gamer versions, it would still stretch over the 70+ pages which would cost a small fortune and then you have p&p ) so you could be looking at about 20-22 euro per issue excluding p&p so I can't see that been viable route in producing a physical copy, but I will find out exactly what's involved and how far it can be taken.

Now regards to a Falcon or Jagaur Gamer magazine, it's extremely unlikely , I never own a n Atari Jaguar or Falgon, although good machine, the jag scene probably has enough content to create a magazine one, but again, requires too much effort to do it justice, writers and contributors etc. and all needing to be non-bias is all near impossible to do, especially with how lively the jag fans are, I would hate to step on anybodies toes.

So I hope I've answered best I can to your queries, I will have a chat with a good friend of mine about what could be done with a physical version of St gamer magazine.

Have a good one.

Hi Greyfox.

I'm well and truly late to this party but I'd be more than willing to contribute some reviews to the next issue of ST gamer or Jaguar gamer if there is going to be one. I did do a few retro reviews years ago for defunctgames.com.

Get in touch if you're still looking for contributors.

Bump!

Why did the magazine end with issue #2? I would be more than glad to keep buying them for years to come. In fact I would even subscribe to it. I am a sucker for magazines. :)

I decided due to the time constraints and trying to structure a magazine of this type simply wasn't doable under a single individual environment , design, layout, exclusive content not found anywhere etc..and then putting all together, promotion work and advertisments etc. Too much work for no real return, I finalised it with issue two as I had a ton of content left from issue one so I put it together for issue two, what I can say was late last year I design and created a free atari st magazine in conjunction with my good friend Steve from Atari Crypt with our Atari Crypt Volume one digital magazine to switch you can download for free on his blog site, simply Google it.

Hi Greyfox.

That is very nice of you man, but I've moved on from doing Atari ST magazines at this stage and very sure I would have loved to have you involved with both previous issues, I never owned an Atari jaguar and with what I've seen within the Jag community I don't think it would fit, as I've seen some amount of negative issues with jag folk here and other places, so I'd have bow out of that request. But if I ever do decide or ever get the time too to do anything Atari ST related, I will most certainly PM you in regards to it so thank you very much for your input here.

I do have in production, well no, it's actaully finished a Coin-op arcade book guide with over 200 pages of content to which I hope at some stage to run a kickstarter , again all boils down to time, resources and logistics. ☺

Have a good guys.
