What kind of screws holds the 1040 STe floppy disk in place?

I'm talking about if you turn your Ste upside down, they are all in an backwards "L" shape toward the top left. I need to go to Home Depot to see what type and length, but all three are missing so I can't go with one to test. Are they the same thickness as the other screws, just longer?

Not sure, been a while since I've opened an ST up.

They should in theory be the same fine pitched ones you use on a PC floppy drive (just checked) - they're the same type for bottom or side mounts. But the overall screw size might be different, generally a PC mounting only needs the screws with about 6mm overall thread length.

I've literally got hundreds of these things lying around - sometimes when I scrap a PC I'll keep stuff like that, plus often you'll get screws thrown in when you buy mounting brackets and stuff.

I don't have a spare PC lying around to test, just a laptop. They appear to be fairly long to go in, however. The other screws don't even come close, so it will need to be roughly three times the size. Thanks huggyone76. Hopefully Home Depot has them. Perhaps Radio Shack mounting screws for PC's?

M3 25mm

Sorry to be a pain, but my STe is also missing one of the very small screws that goes all the way on the bottom. Seems like there were three sizes. The long M3 25mm that holds the floppy drive in place, medium-sized screws on top, and the small ones on the bottom. Do you know what type of screws these are called so I can get one?

The round-headed ones that screw into the plastic are identical to the 3mm self-tapping screws from older Tamiya R/C cars (a lot of devices used these in the 80s/90s I am sure). They come in a few different lengths though- too short and it won't hold, too long and it will split the plastic They can be quite easily cut down to size if they are too long though. They are still pretty easy to find online.

Sorry I don't have an STE, Some data from my two types of machine:

I measure the length of the actual thread, ignoring the head of the screw, this is the way Tamiya does it on the screws I liniked to.

520STM

  • 3x8mm screws on the outside of the case at the front (near the keyboard)
  • 3x10mm screws on the outside of the case at the back (near the ports)
  • Shorter ones (3x6?) on the motherboard.

Mega STE

  • 3x12mm (outside of the case) self- tapping screws.
  • 3x8mm (holds motherboard to case) self- tapping screws

The screws at the front of the 520STM have holes only 2mm deeper than the the screws actually go (of the 8mm thread: 2mm of exposed thread holding the bottom of the case, 6mm biting into the top of the case). Some screws go into long standoffs, there's probably a bit more room for longer screws there without a problem.

If someone with an STE doesn't reply, I would measure the depth of the holes plus the plastic held, and subtract a couple of mm for safety. Or you probably could go with the same screws as the STM, even a bit longer for the ones at the back that go into standoffs.

At the risk of boring you about these screws, here are two self-tapping screws from my Mega STE (12mm and 8mm, nearest the ruler) and two Tamiya screws (10mm silver and 12mm)

The smallest screw in the pic (third one down from the top) seems to be the ones I'm looking for. Here's a link to what appears to be the exact same screw. I'm gonna order them, but wish they came in the original gold...
