HSC11 Round 17: "P" Pitfall!

I've always liked Pitfall but never played it because I find it kind of boring. This is probably the longest Pitfall game I have *ever* played - or at least I don't recall getting excited about only having 3 minutes left (usually I'm more worried about being safe than I am of running out of time, although I am impatient so I usually rush to my death anyway).

Well that's it for this short than usual HSC round, I think darthkur's comments just about say it all for Pitfall!..

I gave up on running the pattern to complete the game on account of he poor collision detection with the scorpions. Staying above ground is really the only viable alternative, which makes the game un-completable sadly.

luckily the epic Pitfall II is superb and well worth ticking-off your Atari todo list. When you 'complete' the game there is then another huge part which (for me) is again too hard to reliably jump over the critters  ;)

Congratulations to McKong for winning the round

Anyone here played Pitfall II and completed the first part or got far on the 2nd part?

Yes, I've beat the game from start to finish. I came upon this thread because I'm currently reading "Pro© Atari," issue 6. In Jason's article about the High Score Club, he wonders if anyone has hacked "Pitfall II" to start from the second section that is exclusive to the Atari 5200/8-Bit. Indeed, yes! Eleven years ago (2004), I asked for a hack like this in an AtariAge thread:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/46098-pitfall-ii-hack-or-patch-to-start-in-lost-caverns/

Within an hour or so, someone had hacked the game! The hack is included in the second posting of the above thread. I still play with that hack now and then; I'm grateful that it exists.

In the 1990s, my friend and I used to have a newsletter called "Orphaned Computers & Game Systems." We still add articles from time to time to our webpage. The latest article on that page is from June of this year, and we'll be adding another article this month:

http://www.orphanedgames.com/

In three different articles written across three issues of the newsletter, he and I cover "Pitfall" in great detail, including how we both beat the "Pitfall II: Adventurer's Edition." You can read the series of articles here in the pages that were converted to html from the newsletter (sorry, like the original newsletter, there's no screenshots on the web version of the article; I really should remedy that someday):

1) "The Legend of Pitfall Harry From the VCS to the PC," by Chris Federico and Adam Trionfo (Orphaned Computers & Game Systems," Vol. II, Issue 2, February 1998)

http://www.orphanedgames.com/ocgs/issue5/harry.html

2) "Pitfall Update: Pitfall III," by Chris Federico and Adam Trionfo (Orphaned Computers & Game Systems," Vol. II, Issue 3, April 1998):

http://www.orphanedgames.com/ocgs/issue6/pitf_iii.html

3) "Pitfall Update: The End of the Secret Level!," (Orphaned Computers & Game Systems," Vol. II, Issue 3, April 1998)

http://www.orphanedgames.com/ocgs/issue7/pitfall.htm

I hope you find the articles fun to read, and the "Pitfall II" hack useful-- I know it's fun for me to play. For those that haven't played the second part of "Pitfall II," you'll find it an exciting experience, and really quite difficult.

In wonder if "Pitfall 2" can be played during the HSC: Round 12 (which is the current round, that is about halfway through right now).

Wow! This is wonderful Bally  If I made a list of A8 things I'd like doing having Pitfall II start on the 2nd stage would probably be right up there, as I've never beaten it, and it takes a while to get there  must have been before I joined here ;) Next time I write for Pro© I'll give it a mention :)

Lots of good reading too

Will check out http://www.orphanedgames.com/ We could do with a "slow moving" web site it's hard to keep up with all the great A8 activtiy at the moment :-D We have another candidate for the next HSC Poll
