OldSchoolRetroGamer
Now keeping in mind I own NONE of these it seems every article, site, comment, video I have seen seems to indicate. 1. PS4 2. XboneOne 3. WiiU However, looking it up now the latest info I could find would indicate to my surprise the actual order is : 1. PS4 2. WiiU 3. XboneOne So it would seem unless there has been major changes in the last couple months XboxOne is doing really bad? http://www.vgchartz.com/article/251866/ps4-vs-xbox-one-vs-wii-u-lifetime-salesaugust-2014-update/ PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Lifetime Sales – August 2014 Update "Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U shows how quickly the PS4 has taken the lead. The PS4 has always been ahead of the Xbox One and it surpassed the Wii U in February of this year. The PS4 passed the 10 million mark this month, the Wii U the 7 million mark and the Xbox One the 5 million mark. The PS4 has sold 10.19 million units lifetime, the Xbox One 5.13 million units, and the Wii U 7.13 million units. PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 10,191,770 Xbox One Total Sales: 5,131,517 Wii U Total Sales: 7,130,356" (PS4, Wii U, Xbox One)
Nebulon
I don't own any of those systems either, and I'm not surprised by the numbers. Sony and Nintendo are synonymous with consoles. And if a person wants a console today, most are going to think of one of those two companies. With MS taking what's essentially a PC and trying to market it as a console (again), I think it's a tougher sell this time. The original XBOX did well because a lot of people didn't realize it was pretty much a PC and because it actually had a console performance lead at the time of its launch. The 360 did well because it was a pretty solid console at a competitive price (using non-PC hardware). I think Sony gets away with packaging what's also essentially a PC because of their image as a console-designer/gaming company. That and because they have the best specifications this time around. WestofHouse
I've frequently seen stories saying the PS4 is beating the Xbox One, but I'm surprised at those numbers. I can only guess that Microsoft really hurt themselves with the initial "always on" aspect of the Xbox One. Sure, they reversed that decision shortly after the backlash, but obviously the damage had been done.

E3 2013 came about, and I had been looking forward to what MS was going to do. I went with the Xbox, then the 360. May as well continue the cycle, right? Then the show started and MS was all "DRM, mandatory Kinect, mandatory online, no used games, and oh yeah, we're maybe watching you, but we swear we're not!" After that Sony came out and was all like "Oh, hey, video games, and oh yeah, 100 bucks cheaper!" And that's all she wrote.
moycon
Kind of skewed to compare lifetime sales since the Wii U hit the market a whole year before the other two consoles. But yeah MS shot themselves in the foot early on, not only with the "always on" aspect, but also forcing people to buy the Kinect AND releasing a system that had like half the features of the last gen system. Seems like they have been playing catch up since this gen started.
cimerians
How I chose when to buy and what to buy: Wii U purchased: Not on day 1 but I waited a while until E3 to see what the others were doing and it was a no brainer. I picked a Wii U and a PS4. I can't ever skip a Nintendo console it seems no matter how bleak it starts out. Although I did skip the 2DS PS4 purchased: Main reason RPG's and games. (Anything by Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and the God of War series). Vita is still pretty cool to have. I could have waited to buy this system but I wanted to jump on the PS plus freebies early. Xbox One not purchased: For me it's mainly the attitude at E3 and that I own a solid PC (where most games end up anyway). I'll get one eventually. Changed my mind on the PS4 controller....Xbox still has the best controller ever made. I think part of the reason many avoided consoles this time around is because of PC gaming and tablets. I think sales will pick up every year if there are games to be played. I also think the Wii U will do lot better next year. Lots to look forward to.
Mord
I don't own any of the consoles yet myself but for reference on my plans regarding them: Wii U = Wasn't really interested in the system until their E3 presentation. But I'll be waiting until around christmas to see if I end up buying one at the earliest. If I don't get one then, I'll probably at least start picking up games for the system much like I've done with the Wii/PS3/360. PS4 = Currently no interest in the system as it doesn't have any games that I currently want to play. I do fully expect this to change in the next couple of years so I'll probably be buying those while waiting for a price drop on the console or a bundle I want to have. May get it later in the spring at the earliest, but again I may just wait a year or two until I start seeing games I want. Xbox One = No interest. Turned off by all their initial plans, and I don't trust them to not start adding those things back in after they get enough people sufficiently invested in the system. It feels to me like the lesson they learned from the backlash is more "Oops. We shouldn't have told you that yet." rather than "Oops. Perhaps our plans weren't so great after all." Regardless, if the games made available for it remain similar to what was available on the original Xbox and the 360, I won't be picking it up simply due to lack of games that interest me. Almost all the games on the 360 that I have an interest in aren't exclusive to it.
cybercylon
If I were to buy just one of these, it will probably be the PS4, but not for a couple years. By then, it will mostly like have more games that I like to play (rpgs niche games, etc). I cannot see me buying an xbox one just for Halo and the few exclusives it might have that would interest me. I lost interest in the nintendo franchises a long time ago. Then again, my grandkids may still be working on my PS3 backlog long after I am dead if I buy nothing and I am not that old and neither are my own kids.....

WestofHouse
I don't have any of the current gen consoles yet. My daughter is asking Santa for a Wii U this year, so it looks like that will be my first. I didn't buy a PS3 until last Christmas when I got a new bundle for $199 (with two games). If I buy a PS4 or Xbox One it will probably be under the same circumstances -- after they have been out several years, have dropped in price, and there is a good selection of cheap and/or pre-owned games. Also by then I'll have a better idea which one I want. If I were to choose now it would probably be PS4, but that could change. And since the PS4 isn't backward compatible I would lose nothing by switching to Xbox someday.
HammR25
At this point if I were to buy one of those systems it would be a PS4 simply because it's in the lead, therefore any cross platform titles will be designed for it first. I have no plans on getting any console right now though because almost all of the games can be found on PC and PC has Steam sales.

Reaperman
It's about like asking who's winning the Special Olympics. I'm sure somebody is winning--and bravo to them and all the rest who are trying their little special hearts out. Not terribly surprised to see ps4 in the lead, though. IMO, it's the least unappealing of the bunch by far. I'd still probably sell it if I were given one. 2010-era Reaperman must be rolling over in his grave hearing me say stuff like this. Mord
What are we up to now for lifetime sales? The xbone must have edged past the wii u by now.. Here's what I saw on vgcharts. So no, while it's technically selling more units than the Wii U currently, it's still got a few million to catch up to it. And the PS4 is already past 11 million. It takes a lot longer than a couple months to sell a few million consoles apparently. PS4 252,965 (+30%) 11,261,590 XOne 142,732 (+79%) 5,607,076 3DS 89,869 (-8%) 45,039,174 PS3 52,237 (+13%) 83,427,142 WiiU 50,840 (+13%) 7,309,041 X360 31,720 (+10%) 83,260,579 (Edited to clean it up a little from the copy/paste. The middle numbers were the latest weekly sales.) Edited October 14, 2014 by Mord
Jinks
Why still selling x360 and ps3? Cause the new systems are not backwards compatible? Edited October 14, 2014 by Jinks
toptenmaterial
Why still selling x360 and ps3? Cause the new systems are not backwards compatible? There must be money to be made and they are probably dumping old stock. The PS2 lived for a long time- I remember the first Xbox being fazed out pretty quickly though. Mord
As shown by the middle numbers in what I posted, they're still selling about 50k ps3/360's a week. At this point I'm sure neither are being sold at a loss anymore, and both systems apparently have new games due for release throughout the rest of this year and next year at least. And yes, since neither PS4 or Xbone are backwards compatible, it gives them a reason to continue to sell the hardware. There really isn't a lot of software, relatively speaking, for either of the new consoles to entice everyone to put away their old consoles yet anyway. I'd assume selling PS3s and 360s help lessen the impact of selling the new consoles at a loss anyhow, so it's serving a purpose.
