ydcl
After hearing that Assasins Creed Unity is going to run 900 on both PS4 and Xbox 1; also after hearing the complaints of forced parity, my question is: Do you guys actually notice the difference If I showed you 2 games running from 900 to 1080? I'm just curious at what level is the difference noticeable?
Rybags
With modern LCD digital TVs and monitors there is an exact 1:1 pixel mapping when using the digital inputs (which consoles now provide), so any resolution that's either not native or an integer divisor can potentially look fuzzy. That goes for games and TV shows as well. I've got a HDD recorder which allows selecting output resolution and there's distinct difference among 576i, 720 and 1080 vertical resolutions. But with this game,is it letterboxed or actually upscaling of 900 pixels to 1080?

Rex Dart
Depends. I can certainly tell a difference between the two signals being sent from my PC to my TV, but if a console is internally upscaling to 1080p first before sending to the display, then depending on the quality of the upscaling it could be a close call. Anyways, what's "900"? That's a single dimension only; how many pixels wide are we talking? 1440, I assume, but not necessarily so. I could certainly tell a difference in Skyrim and Sleeping Dogs when I upgraded my video card and was able to bump the resolution up from just around there (1440x900) to 1680x1050. cimerians
I think he means 900p 900p is 1600x900 (laptops) 1080p is 1920x1080
Jinks
I cant tell 1080p from 4k.. So anything 480p and over looks amazing considering I play most of my games in 8bit. dvd to blue ray have very little effect except sound is better on blue ray. What ever happened to 3d tv craze. good thing I didnt upgrade. Waiting 10 years to get 4k on the cheap if it takes off will be the way to go. the techno race is bullshit. exciting for kids I guess. Wow dad lookat that has a higher number can we get it can we get it?!??!!!
Bilnick
I have seen a few of the youtube videos that compare the same game on PC/PS4/XB1. If the sections of the video were not labeled, I doubt I could reliably pick which screen went with what platform. When the differences are pointed out, sure I can see it, but to me the differences are minimal. I would expect the PC will pull away from XB1/PS4 eventually, especially if 4k video catches on. AtticGamer
On my 42" 1080p plasma tv, the only difference I notice between 1080p and lower is when letters are involved, so the desktop, game UI, HUD and small stuff like chat are where I notice the distorted font, but the game itself and the textures look almost the same to me (until texture quality improves). This is on PC with the TV upscaling, because my Nvidia GPU is horrible for that (and monitor scalers are even worse). With consoles, efficient scalers treat the image and the difference is negligible for me, and some even render the game world in 900p (or whatever resolution) and then overlay the UI/HUD in 1080p (or the native resolution), so you don't notice the upscaling as much. I wish this feature as well as anamorphic resolutions (like 1440x1080) were standard on PC. Edited October 13, 2014 by AtticGamer
HammR25
Just depends how far away from the tv I am
AtticGamer
So the new Call of Duty will be 900p for Xbox One, at least for multiplayer, but now they're not rendering the UI at native resolution independently, which is not a good option in my opinion. I'm much more inclined to accept a lower resolution if the game is designed for it, which means having textures with letters that are readable at 720p/882p/900p or whatever, and rendering the UI at native resolution to avoid blurred fonts. I'm much more sensitive to those than slightly less detail on a guy's beard to be honest.
Video
With a side by side, yeah. But to be honest most people wont, or even can't tell the difference. Of course, part of that would be if you use CRT or LCD. LCD tends to magnify weird conversions.
omegadot
If I'm back on my couch and the TV res is a little off native, eh, whatever. i probably won't notice. If I'm at my PC and things are a touch off, end of the world.
BydoEmpire
Marketing departments can tell the difference - 1080p is easier to sell, and 900 might require a bit of "damage control" in certain circles.
Rex Dart
Can you tell the difference between an NES and 7800 screenshot? Same difference.
