Best Vectrex Games?

I have searched AtariAge for this topic before posting this topic and maybe I didn't look hard enough. I could not find this topic and I am just beginning my vectrex collection. Seeing as these games aren't particularly easy to find or cheap I would like to know what games are the best. I already have star castle thanks to frank which I know is awesome, but I have found mixed opinions on different review sites about the other official release GCE games. I am saving my money up for a couple months before going any further, so any input on what to get would be much appreciated. Sorry in advance if this topic has been done a million times before.

My favorites out of the original GCE games:

  • 3D Minestorm
  • 3D Narrow Escape
  • Armor Attack
  • Bedlam
  • Berzerk
  • Clean Sweep
  • Cosmic Chasm
  • Fortress of Narzod
  • Hyerchase
  • Mine Storm
  • Mine Storm II
  • Pole Position
  • Rip Off
  • Scramble
  • Star Hawk
  • Web Wars

There are a lot of great homebrews as well. I recommend getting a VecMulti to load both original and homebrew games onto the same flash cart.

  • Birds of Prey (Phoenix)
  • Bloxorz (beta)
  • City Bomber
  • Moon Lander (Lunar Lander)
  • Nagoya Attack (beta)
  • Omega Chase (Omega Race)
  • Patriots (Missile Command)
  • Protector (Defender)
  • Rockaroids (Asteroids)
  • Rockaroids Remix (Asteroids Deluxe)
  • Space Frenzy (Space Fury)
  • Spike's Water Balloons (Kaboom)
  • Star Fire Spirits (Star Wars Arcade)
  • Trakkers (Targ)
  • Verzerk
  • Wormhole (Gyruss)
  • YASI (Space Invaders)

There's a lot of love for Vector Pilot, and while I think it is very impressive, I just haven't been able to justify buying a $70 (shipped) adaptation of Time Pilot because I can play the arcade original in MAME or on other classic systems. (I pretty much refuse to buy any single game on any system if it is over $50 delivered, no matter how awesome it might be.)

There's also a lot of excitement about the upcoming Vector Patrol, a Vectrex adaptation of Moon Patrol.

Mine Storm is the game I always go back to. Nice that it is built in.

I highly recommend downloading and trying the games via the ParaJVE emulator. A lot of games are included and it can run most homebrews available for download.

Vector Pilot is a lot better than the arcade game. It's not often that I say a translation is better than the arcade, but in this case the developer went above and beyond. IMHO, Vector Pilot is one of the best home brews ever released (for any platform).

I have contacted Kristof via email, so hopefully I can get a copy of this game!

Berzerk and Scramble are really well done.

And for new ones, I can't say enough about Vector Pilot (Time Pilot).

Vector Pilot is possibly the best Vectrex game I have ever played (and I've played quite a few). I'm glad I ordered a copy of it. It's well worth the money:

Hyperchase gets a bad rap, but it's my favorite of the original games. The analog control gives it a high degree of precision, and the sense of speed is fantastic. Price is low too.

However it's the perfect storm of 'bad rap.' Hyperchase's analog control system really does take a few games to get used to. That wouldn't be so bad except the default game mode is awful. It's an unlimited life time trial which forces players to complete the whole game. The other game mode, alternatively, is a set number of lives and then you restart. It's got a high score to chase instead of a best time. Beginners can lose their lives on the early stages until they get the hang of the controls. This keeps first time players from encountering the 'instadeath' portions of the game until they're ready.

Instadeath + unlimited lives + low skill = a very bad time

I thought hyperchase looked great, better than the expensive pole position from what I've seen. Especially considering the price. Pole position seems to get more praise, but it doesn't seem as original to me.

Web wars looks like a very unique game, but it's kinda pricey. Is it worth the cost?

It's definitely unique. I don't know of anything else quite like it.

Not sure why it's so expensive though. I'd rate it as a pretty good game. But I think there are better ones on the Vectrex for sure.

I'm really trying to get the hang of Hyperchase. I thought for sure the analog stick wouldn't be too tough, but yeah -- it does take time to get the hang of it. I still suck at it and hope to one day become a Hyperchase Jedi Master (unlikely, but one can dream).

They should have made Luke play hyperchase with the blast shield down. That would have been the true test.

You can also get a rewritable multigame cartridge to test the original vectrex games, as they are free to distribute (not commercially).

Oh, i have just remembered that I offer those rewritable multigame cartridges :-D

But mines are not the only option: look at madtronix webpage, vecmulti, and this thread: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/127752-flashcart-and-multicart-list-all-systems/

I think it helps if you have a high score to chase. In the classicgameroom review, he set's the one I was chasing (3977). It took me a long time to squeak (just a little) past it.

Most of the high score sites around the net only have 'best times' for the first game mode.

I think that if the order of the two game modes were reversed, making score attack the default, hyperchase would remembered much more fondly.

Web Wars is a horrible game. All you have to do is go at the slowest speed and you'll rack up points without ever progressing in the game.

Thanks, Ill spend my money on better titles. I think sometimes reviewers don't give there honest opinions.

So far I'm thinking of getting vector pilot, thrust, solar quest, hyperchase, and scramble in the immediate future. Of course I hope to eventually get them all. But those should pacify me for a few months. I already have star castle, armor attack, cosmic chasm, and berzerk.
