Ordered a NOS PEB. Now what?

I've just ordered one of those shiny new PHP1200 PEBs off eBay as when I originally had my TI back in '83, I never had the chance of owning one.

As this is just an empty box, I'll need to fill it with goodies, such as a disk controller. Is eBay the only place that they turn up? I see the same guy who sold the PEB has a NOS going for $175. Seems a bit expensive!

What other cards do folks use in their PEBs?

Yeah no kidding! This is just my personal opinion here, but $175 for a disk controller board is just plain ROBBERY! I could care less if it's new or not. I'm sure if someone here cannot sell you one, they might might be able to point you in the right direction.

Since you are starting from scratch, and might not be able to locate or get an RS-232 at a reasonable price right away, but still need to get the programs from the Internet/PC to the TI, might I make a suggestion? Consider << ONE OF THESE >>. If you have an SD card slot on your PC, you'll easily be able to transfer all the software you download and put it ALL on the SD card and run on the TI from DSK1.

Lotharek designs and builds amazing peripherals for vintage computers. I've been looking at his UltraSatan for my STe. You're really happy with the disk emulator? Does it fit ok into the PEB? I'd still need a controller though.....anyone have a spare they'd like to sell?!?!

I am VERY happy with my HxC!

A couple of other guys just recently got them as well. You might want to ask them were they got their 5.25 to 3.5 adapters, power Y-cable, and ribbon cable though.

As for how it fits, look at the picture below... :)

Looks really neat. Can't decide if I need a 3.5" or 5 1/4" floppy drive as well. I have the editor/assembler package as I'd like to start getting into the language and it has a few 5 1/4" floppies.

Back in the day I had the thermal printer. No idea what happened to it.

Well, you have a distinct advantage of starting off with a BRAND NEW P-Box, so you can populate it any way you want! :)

The following are just my opinion(s), and someone else may have another to offer, but here it goes...

You may decide that you need no floppy drive at all, (at least at first) as dang near everything is available via the Internet. I'd get the HxC first, play around for awhile and see what your needs become.

If you decide later that you do need floppy drive, I would unequivocally suggest the 3.5" variety. Why?

1) There are 1/2 power 3.5" drives and they put less strain on the 3+ decades old power supply, besides

you'll want a half-power drive because you'll be sticking two in the place originally designed for one.

2) The media is more reliable and easier to come come by.

Honestly, I have no clue if there is a 1/2 power TI compatible 5.25 that will do 80 track.

Man that's beautiful. Maybe I should ditch my mini-PEB and bring out the beast again.

Is your mini-PEB a Corcomp? If so, you might be interested in the new DSR eprom for it. It removes that nasty startup code and allows it to respond like a normal TI, eliminating the problems with some software and games.

No it's just the CF7+. I guess mini-PEB isn't the right term for it. Although that Corcomp unit is really nice looking as well, I've seen pictures of it.

Thank you for taking the time to explain, I really appreciate it.

I still have to get my hands on a FDC. Looks like I'll just have to be patient and hopefully one will turn up on eBay at a reasonable price. There's a used one available, but it doesn't look that well looked after. The pcb connector is broken and the crack is close to the ribbon cable connector.

welcome to the PEB owners club :) My girlfriend hates me for it but I will never get rid of the PEB.

You should be able to find people with spare cards here and on the ti-99 yahoogroups.

It might take some time until a possibility shows up to get all the cards.

The Basic setup consists of the Flex Interface (you got that?), the Disk Controller, the 32K Memory Expansion and the RS-232 card.

If you are impatient try ebay:

Ok I have all three. What else is there? I don't think TI released any other cards other than the P-Code card and the only third party ones I can think of are a calendar/clock card and the Speech Synthesizer on a card (not sure if that was an official card or just a hack). Of course there's always the Geneve but that's a whole new computer. :)

think of Gram Cards, Ramdisks, SCSI Controller, Harddisk Controller.

... Yep, there were those, as well as an 80 column card or two, and some might even have a SID card installed.

Yep, there was the printer buffer, clock, speech interface also know as the CorComp Triple Tech Card. and soon we'll have Greg Warner's new speech interface.

Wow, thanks for the info guys. I've got a FDC on the way from the guy IWANTGAMES suggested - thanks again for that. He said it hasn't been tested for a while, but I can't see why it shouldn't work. I'll now need to get hold of the FD cable, which I can assume that it's the same type as used in any old PC? Do I also need the Disk Manager 2 cartridge as well?
