We review Coleco Donkey Kong plus DK Arcade and D2K Arcade. We interview the head of Elektronite / Classic Game Publishers William Moeller. And we interview Carl Mueller Jr. - programmer of the DK/D2K Arcade games. We also have a listener interview with "Intelli-Virgin" Greg Polander, and get his thoughts on the Intellivision Flashback. Of course Feedback, News and George are here too.

I really want to thank Nurmix for the chance to be on this! I reached out to him about a month ago asking him if he might be interested in my thoughts on the Flashback since I really liked the 'Intelivirgin' segment that they did in the last podcast. I was only thinking a e-mail, but he's the one who suggested Skype. That inspired me to buy a mike and a podfilter, and then once I had the stuff I'm like 'damn, now that I have this, maybe I should give serious thought to that SNES podcast I've been kicking around in my head....." :)

Since we recorded this about 10 days ago I've gone ahead and done a test podcast and (last night) the intro episode to the podcast. It's rough, but I know that things will get better as I get used to it.

So I really have him to thank for giving me the kick to get my own podcast going. :)

Can't wait to listen to this great episode!

Thanks, Greg.

I'll get going on that theme song now that I finally got episode 15 out.

And I'd be very interested in the SNES podcast. I have sort of a "fan who never originally owned one" history with it.

Hot damn. Another great podcast effort. I learned quite a bit about the modern DK versions (for example I finally learned the difference between the D2K cart that I actually own and the Donkey Kong Arcade cart that I don't) - great interview.

I know it's not possible, but it would be cool to actually hear about someone disassembling the Coleco version and seeing if the code has the same smell as the actual game play, or if there were some kind of real restraints that went into making the game. I don't want anyone to suffer from actually playing it (again), just curious about the things from the developer's perspective.

Thanks Intellivisionaries!

This is definitely another great episode! Still listening to the interview w/ Carl Mueller, Jr. and he does talk about looking at the disassembly of the Coleco version. In a nutshell, Carl gave the impression that he understands why the boards look the way they do - partly due to system constraints - and he suspects schedule pressure and inexperience w/ the platform were the major contributing factors. For the fugly Mario though, there's no explanation, nor for the substandard sound. After all, it seems they ARE using >1 MOB for the Mario sprite, so they understood that -- so why the lousy pixel art? And the sound chip wasn't exactly a totally esoteric one in those days - pretty standard fare, really.

With all the trashing over the years of the game, even if some intrepid investigator does track down the original developer, that person might shy away from granting an interview to an expected hostile audience. Still, it would be neat if it ever happened.

I have not actually gone through the Coleco DK code. I only poked around in it when I found that the hammers were unobtainable under emulation. It turns out there was a horrendous typo in the original code that should have been comparing against an immediate value but instead was reading STIC memory. What miracle allows this to work on real hardware, I am unsure.

On the other hand, they did fit the two boards in only 4K, which isn't bad.

The only disassembly I believe I discussed was of the sound code of the arcade version.

Thanks for clearing that up! That's what happens when listening while taking kids to school, pausing in unexpected places, etc. Lost context for some of it.

When you uncovered the typo, which of the following happened?

  1. Mouth hung open
  2. Eyes went bug-eyed
  3. Cocked head to side and furrowed your brow
  4. Put your head in your hands
  5. Shook your head
  6. other

When I read your sentence above, I did option 2.

I cringed, put my hands on my head, shook my head, nearly shed a tear and then change the CMP to CMPI and then very quickly got on with my life. ;-)

Thank you! That's high praise.
