Since I don't have this cartridge, I'm playing Donkey Kong via an Atari Emulator in my Nintendo Wii hacked with the Homebrew Channel*! :)

So, I'm feeling I'm playing with Nintendo Power. :-D

*A Wii with Homebrew Channel is the best emulating experience I had. A true gaming console, many controllers available and many emulators too. If PC lacks something for you, I really recomend the Wii as your main emulation platform.

This actually took me several attempts: 29,700

For some reason, my computer isn't detecting the presence of my sd card, so I can't include the pic until this problem is resolved :( :?

BONUS Paragraph:

Nostalgia, both bitter and sweet, flows through my heart whenever I play Nintendo games on an Atari console, as it was the VCS rather than the NES that first let Mario run and jump across the bunny-eared television of my childhood, free from d-pads and x axes unhemmed in by single screens. “Nostalgia,” you see, is a more complex word than we generally tend to think of it as. The term comes to us from a compound of two Greek words: the Homeric word “homecoming” (νόστος) and the word for “pain, ache” (ἄλγος). And so it is with Nintendo on Atari for me. Bestowing pixelated happiness with one hand and putting out its cigarette in my bowl of sugary Saturday Morning Cartoons cereal with the other, the return to the broken home of my video game childhood aches sweetly. What blissful ignorance must have glistened in my prepubescent eyes as I gazed upon the Mario Bros. for the 2600’s cartridge’s label art, unaware that the seeds of the destruction of Atari’s Kingdom were contained within? To be fair, the Kingdom had, more or less, already crumbled by the time Nintendo arrived on American soil, but after the foreign power established dominance in the collective living rooms of the youth of my generation the once mighty king would never rise again to reclaim his throne. Now, all these years later, with every jump Mario bounds over a barrel on the 7800, I remember the Kingdom that fell, celebrating and mourning ever 100 points.

Does anyone know if there is a pattern to where that spring is going to land near the ladder?

The spring in that screen does not change its pattern only its speed...at least that is what I have seen in my research of that screen...there are two places that I call safezones...(I may be giving something away here)...see pic.

Actually it does. When you get to that level on Standard the first time just sit at watch the spring. It falls near the ladder in 1 of 3 positions: 1) on the left rail 2) in the center 3) on the right rail. It can make the difference in making it to the top. Position 2 is the best as it won't hit you when you are mostly up the ladder.

I was hoping someone knew the pattern since it would make timing position 2 easier.

For those who are not able to pass the Spring Screen on later levels, I would like to share DK Standard gameplay video, recorded by kernzy P. Pay special attention at the 11:30 mark, and see how to pass sucessfully the "Spring Screen" on Level 4.

@Treismac -- great score and even better essay! I like the inclusion of the Homeric Greek root words, as I took 2 years of ancient Greek way back in high school (not too long after getting my first Atari 2600!)

Thanks, Gorfy! I was studying for my state's English Literature teaching certification exam when I first stumbled upon the Greek origin of "nostalgia." To say the least, it resonated with my experience with nostalgia.

If the essay wasn't limited to a paragraph, I would have worked in playing unauthorized Tengen carts on the NES and using a Genesis controller for the 7800 DK high score competition, completing the retro trio. ;)

41,900 Boy, I am not that good at this game!

This was my first time playing the 7800 version. Did anyone else notice that the game is picky when pressing UP to climb ladders. It seems if my controller is not perfectly up, Mario freezes. I tried the proline, joypad and a Sega Genesis controller all with similar results. I found an Atari 2600 controller worked best.

Same problem here, almost same score. :)

MY PARAGRAPH:

Mario Bros. on Atari system is my top favorite Nintendo game. The best platform to play this game is Atari 7800 because of nice graphics, more differentiated scoring, abscence of flickering (on Atari 2600 version, the presence of flickering makes this game awful to play) and coin phases which occur on Stages 3, 8, 13, 18, 23 etc. The players can stay on the top of POW and have more time to see and dodge, avoid or punch the fireballs.
