+SpiceWare
If I had known that, I would have offered my help in optimizing for space. I am really good at that. That he is! Part 16 of The Story of Stay Frosty 2 will cover our 3 week optimization session where we freed up nearly 2K of space. It wasn't 3 weeks of actual work though as Christmas and New Years were in the middle of that.
RePixel8
Thanks for the offer. I'll know where to come in future How about optimising for performance? I'm recently working on a new platform game, written in BB, but with an assembly display kernel. I like the ease of development that BB provides for the game logic and bankswitching etc, but this particular game really required a custom kernel to do things like changing the playfield color mid-scanline and render horizontal sections of the PF based on ROM lookup tables. I put it down a while ago to concentrate on other projects, but when I get back to it I think it definitely could benefit from some optimisation to squeeze a few cycles out of the display loop, so I may be requiring your assistance
Thomas Jentzsch
Sure! For me the kernel is the most fun part of a project.
AW127
However, the PAL version should only be slightly faster than the NTSC version and not anywhere near 20% faster. Hy RePixel8. First of all, i want to tell you that this game is great and plays good. The speed difference is not 20% but its about 10% - 12%, when i use a stopwatch and orientate on certain things in the background of the game and how they scroll to certain positions. So the player feels this speed-difference at once, because it`s not that small. Maybe it can be made smaller, like it is in other speed-adjusted PAL-games. I did design the game in such as way that the NTSC version will work without problems on a PAL console (i.e. PAL60) and vice versa, as I used colors that work on both formats. This color-thing you solved in a superb way! And i wondered how this can be, when i started this NTSC-rom and saw no color-difference in PAL and NTSC mode. First game i saw on the VCS2600, which looks totally similar in PAL and NTSC mode, without the need to adjust the color-palette. Good idea this was. I wished, more games would use colors, which were nearly the same in NTSC- and PAL-palette. 2) The roms that can be downloaded from http://repixel8.com/games/jumpvcs do not have PAL / NTSC switching capabilities built in....... Yes, i also found out this, because nothing happened when i used the roms in STELLA and changed to sw-colors in game-properties.
