Bunch of original documentation

Hello all,

 

I just picked up a boxed 99/4A with a ton of original documentation , sales lit. & addenda in pristine shape:

 

 

I was wondering if all of these docs had been released 'into the wild' in the community yet. I'm more than happy to scan any/everything and make nice hi-res pdfs for historical purposes. But I don't wanna duplicate a whole bunch of work that's already been done.

To my knowledge that stuff is all fairly common and has been scanned and archived. It was very cool of you to ask and volunteer to help - much appreciated! Are you just getting into the TI 99/4A?

The really hard to find stuff is third party documents.

The police may want a look at the program library document, that guy on the front looks almost exactly like a supposed serial sex offender that they are looking for.

Thanks for the very kind offer. Since that is a PRISTINE copy above, I would not mind seeing a high resolution scan of it. I"d update it for use with my modified console, so after I'm dead whomever gets the thing has an easy time setting it up (so they do not throw it in the garbage).

Actually, the various addendum pages and the warranty cards are probably good candidates for a high-res scan as well. Those are usually missing or trashed, and I don't think I've seen really good copies of them online yet.

Ya, this is my first experience with a TI... I've always been more into the C64 for 8-bit stuff but I saw this one at a pawn shop and figured I could have some fun with it. it followed me home.

 

@am1933: as I said on another forum, I bet whoever hired Cosby to endorse the hell out of this thing regrets it now. In hindsight, Shatner or John Cleese were *way* better choices.

Nice looking console! Wow, and you got a set of those EARLY joysticks too? Not bad!

 

Do you have any cartridges yet? If not, I'd suggest taking a look at Extended Basic 2.7 Suite. You'll be able to use the built-in Extended BASIC, and then later if you decide to get a Nano-PEB or a full-fledged P-Box you'll be able to use the built-in games and utilities as well.

 

BTW - Thanks for sharing the photo, I never get tired of seeing peoples consoles. There are a couple of older threads that have images of other peoples systems too if you are interested.

After the Rolf harris sex scandal and subsequent Guilty verdict, I think in some cases some people have jumped on the "Lets find some old geezer and label them a sex offender" bandwagon.

 

Lets just assume Innocent until proven Guilty, listening to what the media say isn't always a good thing as they like to sensationalise everything for the sake of ratings.

Both were engaged with other vendors, as I recall. Shatner was with Commodore plugging the 99/4A's competitor, VIC-20. Cleese was pushing Compaq, thought I am not certain the years for his spokesmanship.

 

Two things about your purchase: first, I am surprised that a pawn shop would take an old computer like the 4A in, and secondly I am amazed you found one with the original sticks. Good get, indeed. (Reminds me, there is a pawn shop out in my old stomping grounds the other side of Texas which had a nice collection of TI, Commodore, and Amiga items when I was there a couple years back... make me think maybe I can make another visit...)

Okay, threw some scans up in this thread. Hope this helps someone out.

 

@OLD_CS1: I was monumentally surprised to find it there as well. It's more of a pawn/junk/estate/surplus/whatever shop who often have a ton of video games and accessories, but still, this thing in its original box with RF switch, original PSU, docs, etc. was pretty surprising. It was buried on a shelf behind some dusty old music gear they had on 30% off & had clearly been there for several months if not who knows how long. The guy gave me a huge discount off the already-marked-down-several-times price; think he didn't really expect it to sell.

 

I'm in a kind of crazy town for thrift shops, surplus, 2nd-hand shops, etc. They are amazing. Yesterday I wandered into a different place and in after rummaging through a bin of suitable looking things managed to find a cartridge of Shamus (the only TI-related thing in the entire place)... I remember playing this on C64 back in the day. Works fine!

 

Unfortunately my original joysticks don't work. The buttons are extremely sticky and feel like they've been almost rusted in place. I'm gonna have to take them apart and see if I can free them up. Also on that note, the keyboard really likes to double-tap keys as I'm trying to type... is there a known fix for this? Dirty contacts?

As I absolutely intend to use this thing as a development/hacking/whatever platform I've just ordered a NanoPEB. I am a musician and want to poke with MIDI on this machine so the serial interface is interesting to me. I'm curious about that Extended Basic 2.7 cart - seems to have all the useful stuff I want but it looks like they are not easily available & I have to wait for another run to be produced? That's kind of a pain, but nice to see some new dev tools being made either way. Is it possible to run the original editor/assembler from a disk image?

On those joysticks--the contacts are foil pads, and were notorious for wearing out quickly back in the day. There were several published repair plans in the old 99er magazines, IIRC. The balls at the top of those sticks will bite into your hands when playing too long too (more than 30 minutes or so)--known from experience with my original set and TI Invaders. . .

 

On XB 2.7, Gazoo will probably chime in here as the builder/programmer responsible for the XB 2.7 cartridges, but the board to build them is readily available--so it is just a matter of demand being high enough that he considers it worthwhile to buy another batch of the necessary chips to fabricate them. His cartridge is the first readily-available product to utilize the UberGROM boards designed by Acadiel, Tursi, and I.
