Zonie
LMAO My son said something simpler like "What is that block supposed to be"? YOU!
K.Michael
That's true. But our imagination soared...since we didn't have the realistic graphics of today's games. We HAD to use our imaginations to picture much more than what was on the screen. haha I grew up on the N64 which looked like 'real life' to me, until I got an Xbox which looked like 'real life' until I got a 360. I think our imagination fills in a lot of 'blanks' with every game-system XD granted the N64's graphics still hold up pretty well today, but if you switch from Halo 4 straight to Perfect Dark, it takes the brain a few minutes to re-adjust to what all those blocks are supposed to be Edited December 23, 2014 by K.Michael
Unbeliever
That's very true. And yes, the brain tends to "fill in the blanks", but today's graphics are SO good, the brain doesn't have much to do these days. lol
themushroom
Okay, so I presented an Atari 2600 six-switcher to my sister, her husband, and their three kids (12, 8, 4)... My sister was pleased since I'd promised her an Atari in, uh, 1996. But she didn't play it, she had an infected tooth so one hand was always packing ice onto her jaw therefore couldn't hold a joystick. Her husband was pleased because, the story goes, he managed to keep his from when he was a kid and presented it to his children a few years ago -- and they proceded to break the cord, or something of that nature. He figured out to hook it up to his big TV without having to unplug/rewire anything, just have the TV in 'Antenna' mode and had to scan channels 1-4 with the Atari turned on so it'd see that it should "count in" the channel it broadcast on. The 12 year old said she'd play later, and I presume it was because she hated competing with her little brothers. The 8 year old and the 4 year old were ecstatic. They never made fun of the graphics or showed any doubt/disrespect. Their father didn't want to sit up all night, so he let them play three games for several turns, and he and I took each other on a couple times to show the kiddies how it's done: * Ms Pac-Man: The boys would always get cornered in the same spot and didn't try to eat all the dots, preferring to try to eat ghosts after grabbing a power pellet, but they were loving it. Sucked at it but loving it. * Space Invaders: After they'd tried it single-shot once each, I fried it to get double shots and showed them the strategy of going all the way to the right to wipe them out as they moved into range. After a couple games each, I put them into cooperation mode... accidentally going one click further than I intended so they had moving barriers to contend with. * Combat: "Okay, you guys can play a game you can't possibly stink up," my bro-in-law said, and I put it on one of the mazes with guided missiles. And then one of the mazes with bouncing shots. And then airplanes. Then back to the tanks. They were addicted and the 4 year old sometimes beat the 8 year old. So I'd say this was a rousing success, and I await hearing how everyone in the family fares at the rest of the collection. sloth-machine
Just show them the Atari when they are very young, they'll think that's all the gaming industry has to offer. Worked with my kid. Yep, My son who is 5 loves Atari. I first show him Atari when he was 4, and now he associates pixelated images and graphics with 'videogames', but he also understands and knows about modern video games (he plays Wii and Computer games from time to time). However he never once berated Atari 2600 graphics, in fact he likes them (whenever he see them on a random piece of merchandise). It all has to do with exposure. We grew up on Atari, so back then it was fine, and it's fine now. Introduce your young children to small amounts of Atari and they will think that's how it is. +LS650
While out for a walk few months ago, I was wearing the shirt shown in the attached photo, which features the hero and robots from Atari 2600 'Berzerk'. A boy of about 5 years of age looked at my shirt, pointed, and said, "Hey mister, I like your Minecraft shirt." DT Kofoed
My son's friends (13-15) always want to play Atari when they come over. I force them to play Basketball and LAUGH LAUGH LAUGH as I force them to sit through an entire game!!! The square ball! The single team member! The bounce-off-the-floor into the "hoop" shots! The hip kids talk about "Nintendo Hard," and they don't know sh*t. Pop in some arcade conversions and give 'em a high-five if they last more than 10 seconds. Both my kids sometime play in the HSC with me, so they're cool...
Jinroh
My 4 years old son, loves all things Pac-Man, so when I finally got another VCS for Christmas, I showed him Pac-Man. He looked at it disapprovingly and said, "That's not real Pac-Man!" Haha. It's funny to compare our reactions, as I got Pac-Man for the VCS when I was his age. I spoiled him with those modern home ports haha. Minecraft....*giggles uncontrollably* Wow, now I feel really old. lol Gah, you and me both. Kids today. Syzygy1
I used to call the graphics "blocky blobs", thanks to a Kotaku article.
zzip
I feel like Minecraft made terrible graphics cool again with the kids, so they don't mind the 2600

And then there's 3D Dot Game Heroes. WTF is up with that gigantic sword though? Not cool. Ruins the look of the game IMO.

+save2600
IMG_7089.JPG No comparison, the arrow sword in Adventure doesn't take up a third of the screen! People behind 3D Dot Game Heroes must be on drugs or something. Some 'city of tiny lites' shit going on there.
+Spriggy
Although not a kiddy quote in relation to 2600 graphics ... but within the same spirit. Good mate recently dragged out his multiple 2600s, after I jumped back into this lovely old girl Started to set 'em up, with his 6 year old son 'Sebastian' by his side. Sends me a text ... and I quote ... "Tryin to set up the atari for seb to check out. Not happening... tryin to tune it in and seb says 'I'm pretty sure it only works in the olden days Dad' lol Edited March 31, 2017 by spriggamortis
Andromeda Stardust
Haha, no kidding! And then there's 3D Dot Game Heroes. WTF is up with that gigantic sword though? Not cool. Ruins the look of the game IMO. A fully upgraded sword was boss though. I got the excaliber the minute I racked up 25 of those special coins or what not. It was nearly as powerful as the master sword but with longer reach. I could go in to fight a boss, and if I played it cool, my sword stretched across the whole screen as long as I avoided taking a hit. And the excal still had longer reach than the master sword after I took damage. Some funny swords in that game too. One of them is a stinky floppy fish. Andromeda Stardust
When I was a teen, retro wasn't "cool" it was just old. Anything before NES was dinosaur fossils. I mean heck, we'd all heard the NES was 8-bits and the SNES/Genny was 16, doubling every generation. So Atari must be 4-bit, because it stunk. So naive I was then...
