Hello All,

I have returned to Atari after many years. Just bought a 600XL on ebay last week. I have bought some cartridges that will arrive soon. The emulator Altirra got me interested again. The 600XL was my first computer for xmas 1983. I particularly like the arcade ports, which I think are really well done. Hope I posted this in the correct place.

Welcome! The 600XL is near and dear to me as well... it was my first in '83 or '84.

If you're comfortable with a soldering iron, I highly recommend upgrading to 64K, and possibly adding a composite video jack.

Video 61 has Commando, Venture, Tempest Xtreem, and Xenophobe. All of which are excellent. He has the usual suspects as well.

The only one of those (all excellent) titles that will run on a stock 600XL is Venture.

Welcome back Airsoft,

Fill your boots as we say in the UK, there's some wonderful games out there you need to replay time and time again..

I would seriously add to your list an SIO to USB lead and the rather wonderful aspeqt found with a search on here, that will open your choice to a million and one archived files of Atari goodness. Obviously I hope you will support the new developers such as Petey5m with venture and all the other brilliant new developers but there's a goldmine of old greats like Bruce Lee etc out there for free when you get one of these leads or use the superb Altirra emulator..(get the latest beta via the Altirra 2.50 thread on here)

And of course a very merry Xmas to you..

Run away while you still can!

I found this place this summer, now we are at the end of the year... I have three 800xl's, 3 commodore monitors, several commodore computer variations, various other atari computers and 2600's, a dozen or more atari 8-bit peripherals... hahaha

Lol Ryan,

As a multi computer / console lover I share your love of the old stuff, I never really left the 'scene' as it were and love so many old computers and consoles but my Atari 800 remains my fave, you and Airsoft should check out the Game pack from the sticky thread produced by Starwindz with the help of me and many people here on Atarimania..

It has ALL the classics...

Update: after fixing my "lock up" problem by ordering a new CPU and OS Rom, I have encountered another more serious problem. My 600XL will not display correctly, lots of horizontal lines and static on the screen, as well as not booting. Some research has alerted me to the fact that the "ingot" power supply I am using causes major problems. I am not sure if I should try to order the ANTIC and GTIA chips now, or is it permanantly destroyed? I am highly considering ordering a rebuilt Atari from B&C, if they have any. I have caught the Atari bug, and I can't wait to play the 6 carts I have just ordered.

Welcome to AA, good choice if you ask me, I love the 600XL myself even though my first Atari was an 800XL back in the day. With a few minor mods a 600XL can be made as good as (or even better than) the bigger brothers in the XL/XE series with a small footprint to boot. Hope you sort out your problems with it.

By the way I just replaced the PIA on mine. I am not sure what was wrong with it but it stopped working with my SIO2PC even though It still worked fine with normal atari drives. In any case it is now back to normal.

Those power supplies are a hazard. When they start to fail the voltage increases. If you have a multimeter handy you may want to check it.

There's usually folks on ebay offering modern replacement supplies that are much lighter, more efficient and less dangerous. I don't see any for sale right now. Can you solder? If so, just grab a DIN connector (or cut up the ingot) and a modern 5VDC 2A wall wart.

I wouldn't throw any more parts at it until the ingot gets replaced.
