mbd30
I played this for a few hours tonight. This game offers a terrific sense of accomplishment when you overcome a seemingly impossible stage. But I gave up at level 5-1. Maybe I could finish it after a few more hours of trying to make those insane wall jumps, but I'm not going to spend all night playing this. At least I managed to get near the end. It's further than I ever got when I used to rent this as a kid.
Austin
If you think that's bad, wait until you get to the Joker himself.
mbd30
If you think that's bad, wait until you get to the Joker himself. I don't see how the Joker fight could be any worse. Level 5-1 has those jumps where you have to fall off the side of the platform and wall-jump at the precise moment to get across the gears. It's close to being unavoidable damage. James Rolfe said that it might be the hardest jump in video game history, and it might well be. Overall though, "Batman" is a great action game with really cool graphics and music, and some intense gameplay. The difficulty is about on par with "Ghouls n Ghosts" so thank goodness there are infinite continues. Maybe a little tougher than GNG because of the tricky jumps that you have to do near the end of the game.
Cobra Kai
IIRC the Joker fight was pretty easy, as all you need to do is bum rush him and rapid-fire punch. Great game, this was one of those titles that I loved to play every day after school. Once I finally completed it, I would finish it once a day for awhile, much like I did with Castlevania and Super Punch-Out. Batman is mega hard, but a good experience and a nice payoff with the ending cinematics. I'll bet I wouldn't be able to get very far now. Austin
I don't see how the Joker fight could be any worse. Get to him, then tell me how you really feel. Level 5-1 has those jumps where you have to fall off the side of the platform and wall-jump at the precise moment to get across the gears. It's close to being unavoidable damage. James Rolfe said that it might be the hardest jump in video game history, and it might well be. The wall jumping there is certainly tough if you are not used to it. I don't think it's the hardest in video gaming, but it does take practice. Just remember to stagger your jumps, if that's even the right term for it. You don't always have to hold down the button and make a full jump. Simply tap it to baby jump back and forth. Also, jump straight into the enemies and punch them as fast as you can, as long as they are blinking while you are punching they won't be able to hurt you. That's one of the biggest, most important tricks in this game and really useful on the last vertical stretch before the Joker. Ghouls 'n Ghosts/Ghosts 'n Goblins are far more difficult games, in my opinion. This is mostly due to the randomized nature of how and where enemies spawn. Some are always in the same spot, but many are randomized. On some playthroughs you will have an easier time than others due to where the enemies appear and how frequently they appear. In Batman, the enemies are in the same spot in every single playthrough. It just requires repeated playthroughs and precision, where the GnG series requires you to be on your "A" game at all times. You can also take things slow in Batman and grind for power-ups and health without the worry of a time limit.
mbd30
I've made it to the Joker several times now and he's kicked my ass. But I'm getting a better feel for the jumps during the vertical stretch to the Joker, which is the toughest part of the game. It's a requirement to have full health during that part, because there are a couple spots with unavoidable hits where you're going to lose two health units both times. When I do manage to survive the whole thing, I have almost no health left. The trickiest part of that vertical section is this one claw machine that is above some gears. You have to time your jumps perfectly or you'll either get smacked by the claw machine or get smacked by the gears and die. mbd30
I came so close to beating the Joker. Damn. But I think I've had enough of this game for awhile. Making it to the final boss and almost beating him is close enough.
