How to mount 2 Half Height Drives in a PEB WITHOUT DRILLING

These can be 2 x 5.25" half height drives, or 2 x 3.5" drives in a drive adapter or a mixture of both.

You will need:- 2 x Dual drive mounting bracket http://www.connectworld.net/cgi-bin/cabled/DSK9010

1 x Set of four M3 metric screws for mounting drives (Countersunk) http://www.connectworld.net/cgi-bin/cabled/DSK9009

2 x 1/8x1" & 2 x 1/8x3/4" self tapping (drilling) screw and washers. (Sourced from my local Ace hardware store) These are used to hold the assembled drives in place using the original PEB drive holes. The longer screws are needed to clear the black mounting bracket from underneath the PEB. The screws are suitable for these 3.5" to 5.25" plastic adapters http://www.ebay.com/itm/251589019982?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Different adapters will require suitable fixtures.

One of the adapters and screws. It's made of aluminium of about 2mm 1/8" thick :-

No instructions were provided, so this is how I mounted them - YMMV. I Used the countersunk screws and attached both brackets to the drive that would sit in the right most position in the PEB.

Once the brackets have been assembled, slide the other drive into the mounting bracket gap, not forgetting to connect the drive cables.

To get the adapter & bracket holes into view from the drive holes in the PEB might take a bit of fiddling and tipping the PEB one side then the next.

Tipping the PEB upside down revels the other drive mounting holes

Screwed into position:-

Looking Good!!

For some stupid reason the image will not show the right way round. You get the idea! Resolved.

I love this step-by-step instruction as well. just placed an order for this for my new PEB to mount 2 disk drives into it.

However I got way better prices from this seller, which seem to sell the same items:

http://hello-cables.com/legacy.html

Examples:

TI99-4 2-Disk Cable and Bracket Set only costs $6.47 compared to $15.58

TI99/4a Side Port Extension only costs $12.17 compared to $29.32

TI99/4a Side Port Splitter 16 inches only costs $18.81 compared to $45.32

They're the same company! Check the URL, both go to connect world, but hello world has different pricing. Sounds a bit fishy.

Possibly! I just ordered a 16" 'Fire Hose' extension from Hello Cables yesterday and this morning I got an Email from IEC saying that they shipped. I saved quite a bit (with shipping) by ordering from the Hello Cables website. It appears Cable Depot, the highest priced website, and Hello Cables, the lowest priced website both use IEC as their source.

I'm betting those two websites/sellers carry no inventory of their own and are just websites that sell things and get a cut of the sale.

The stuff I ordered came this week, so ordering at HelloCables lead to getting mails and a package from IEC.

I just used your guide and the material to install 2 disk drives without any drilling. Thx again.

Cool! I'm glad it worked for you as well.

It sure is great to see all the new blood coming into the forum, people expanding TI's, others making great new toys and re-making old ones, new software being written or upgraded, even new newsletters. I don't think I had this much fun with the TI on my first time around.

UPDATE: I just got a call from IEC concerning the 16" fire hose extension. (I had made a notation of a cracked circuit board, but that the item worked so had no problems). Well, it appears their customer service is great because I received this follow up call.

The PCB was in fact NOT broken, to keep costs down, they cut down a 34 pin connector to make up the 44 pin connection. The costs of having a 44 pin connector made up would not be feasible considering the quantity of these things that they sell. This makes sense to me!

They guy I talked with was also TI'er from days past and told me they have been making cables for it since the TI was new.

So if you want to get rid of that monstrosity off the side of the TI, << THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO >>.
