Rick Dangerous
Okay, I have to start with a disclaimer: I am NOT a sports games person. I used to hate it in the army when dudes would huddle around my gamecube for hours in the barracks playing Madden nonstop... I am just an occasional sports game dabbler. Wondering what else you "casual" or even hardcore sports game lovers out there like. Most of the time I'd rather be out there playing, but when you can't there is always: Football: Classic: Techmo Super Bowl (Nes)- Classic.. 16 Bit era: NFL Quarterback Club (32x), John Madden Football (3DO)-Both quality easy to play titles Modern: NFL Blitz (N64)-Arcadey Fun.. Baseball: Dunno? Reccomend me a few... Basketball: 16bit Era: NBA Jam (Jag), Slam N Jam 95 (3DO)-Boom Shackalacka, love those big sprites Hockey: Classic: Blades of Steel (NES)- Easy to play, fun 16 Bit: NHL 94' (Genesis)-A LEGENDARY hockey game Modern: NHL Hitz 2003 (Gamecube)-Arcadey fun with lots of goofy unlockables Golf: Portable: Awesome Golf (Lynx)- Fun and easy to play 16/32bit era: Fred Couples Golf (32x), PGA Tour 96 (3DO)- Both solid fun titles that are still regular go-to's for me Modern: Tiger Woods Masters 12 (Wii)- Motion controlled perfection! Tennis: Modern: Virtual Tennis (Dreamcast) fantastic tennis game...still play it. Fishing: Classic: The Blue Marlin (NES)- Best NES fisher to this day Modern: Marine Fishing (Dreamcast)- Makes me feel like I am on the ocean. And a rod peripheral that works! Skiing/Snowboarding Classic: Ski or Die (NES), Skiing (2600)- Both fun, just missing the yeti from ski free. Modern: 1080 (N64), SSX Tricky (Gamecube)- Both took it to the next level. Racing: Classic: Radracer (NES)-Still one of my all time favorites 16bit: Outrun (Genesis), Roadrash (genesis)- Still fun and always will be 32bit: Need for Speed and Road Rash for the 3DO- Killer!! Modern: Need for Speed Underground (gamecube)-Blew my mind when it first came out What am I missing? What are your favorites?

Cynicaster
I'm not into sports or sports games, either. There have been a few through the years that I've enjoyed, though. Super Challenge Baseball (2600) Track & Field (2600 / Arcade) Decathlon (2600) One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird (7800, TRS-80) Winter Games (C64) RBI Baseball (NES) Tecmo Baseball (NES) Baseball Stars (NES) Blades of Steel (NES) Ice Hockey (NES) Double Dribble (NES) NHL 9X (Genesis) Lakers vs. Celtics (Genesis) Sports Talk Baseball (Genesis) Golden Tee (Arcade) Hot Shots Golf 2 (PS2) Not sure if pro wrestling counts as a sport, but as a kid I really enjoyed wrestling video games: Pro Wrestling (NES) Pro Wrestling (Master System) Tecmo World Wrestling (NES) World Championship Wrestling (NES) Mat Mania (aka Exciting Hour) (Arcade) Mania Challenge (Arcade) WWF Superstars (Arcade) WWF Wrestlefest (Arcade) They started to lose me around the PS1 era, when sports games started to become too elaborate for my tastes. I've played some very modern sports games on PS3 and they're very nice to look at and very impressive in their attention to detail, but I just can't get into them because there is too much detail bogging the game down to the point where it almost proceeds at the pace of an actual sporting event. I don't want to play a simulator, I want to play a video game. That's why the high water mark for me in sports games is the NES/Genesis era.
karokoenig
Hate sports games in general, but I do have a soft spot for Golf games. Enjoyed Leaderboard on the Commodore 64 a LOT back in the days. I dunno if this counts as a sports game at all (as in "driving simulation"), but when it comes to racing, my buddies and I played the hell out of Rally Speedway (also C64). Awesome two-player game. Lentzquest
Some of my all-time favorites: RBI Baseball '95 (32X) RBI Baseball 3 (NES) Realsports Volleyball (2600) Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (Vita) Blades of Steel (NES & Game Boy) Super Baseball 2020 (Genesis) Brutal Sports Football (Jaguar) Mario Strikers Charged (Wii) and pretty much any bowling game on the Wii To this day I would love to find an RBI Baseball arcade game in good condition, or a Capcom Bowling arcade machine. I used to play Capcom Bowling a lot back in the day at a local place when there was a line for the Street Fighter II machine. Over time I found myself having so much fun with it that I'd go straight to it rather than play the fancier stuff. That giant trackball was so much fun, and since you always got to play the full 10 frames you knew you'd get your 50 cents worth.
+cvga
Baseball: Baseball Stars - NES Major League Baseball - Intellivision Star League Baseball - Commodore 64 Football: Tecmo Bowl - NES NCAA Gamebreaker - PS1 Mattel Football - Handheld Basketball: One on One: Larry Bird vs Dr. J - Commodore 64 and Atari 7800 (loved that you could break the backboard) Slam Dunk - Super Pro Basketball - Intellivision (I like the draft) Other: Mike Tyson's Punchout - NES Leaderboard Golf - Commodore 64 Ice Hockey - Atari 2600 Body Slam - Super Pro Wrestling - Intellivision NES Open (Golf) - NES

AtariLeaf
I love sports games, well certain ones anyway. 2600 - Ice Hockey, Pele's Soccer, Realsports Volleyball 7800 - One on One Basketball, Ballblazer (don't know if that counts but I'll include it) NES - Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey Genesis - NHL 94 and 95 are my favorites. Actually trying to find CIB copies of 97 and 98 are proving difficult Tandy Coco - Color Baseball and Skiing Wii Bowling and Pool Hall Pro on the Wii Virtual Pool on PC's and N64 as well as Archer McClean on GBA The Hot Shots Golf games - I currently have one on the PS3 Now if we get into the realm of racing, which I personally put as it's own genre (and one of my favorites) this list would be endless
Cobra Commander
Activision Boxing on the 2600 if I can find an opponent. Sega Bass Fishing on the Dreamcast with the Fission controller of course.
Manoau2002
I am not a sports fan or much of a video game sports fan either. One year for Christmas as a child I received a copy of Wayne gretzky hockey for the NES. I remember playing that against my dad on several occasions. When I bought a Wii I really enjoyed the tennis game included with Wii Sports. I played it for several hours.
chuckwalla
In the '80's I played lots of C64 Star League Baseball (usually got killed by the 'puter), Leaderboard Golf, On Field Football (took me a long time to figure out the plays by trial and error - instructions really help sometimes), and One-On-One Basketball. I still play them on VICE or CCS64. I also played a lot of Atari 2600 Activision Tennis with a couple of guys who were friends of our family (the only time in my life when I played some real Tennis). The Sega Genesis holds the King of Sports titles with NHL'94, Madden '93, Joe Montana '94, Tecmo Super Bowl, Bill Walsh '94, SportsTalk Baseball, NBA Live '95, and PGA Tour III. In terms of handheld electronic games I still pick up Mattel Football 2 and Baseball, and Sears' Electronic Touchdown for a quick game when I'm too lazy to set up a console system. Gabriel
Hmmm. Sports games. They're not my thing, but I've liked a handful over the years. Activision Hockey (2600) Golf (INTV) Football (5200) Baseball (5200) Blades of Steel (NES) Joe Montana Sports Talk II Football (Genesis) Mutant League Football (Genesis) I used to really like Winter Games on the C64. I don't really see racing games as sports titles, but Sega released Virtua Racing (Genesis and 32X) under it's sports banner, so there is that. I like Tekken Bowl on Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2). Should that count? Oh, and there was Tekken Ball on the Tekken 3 disc (PS1) which was kind of like a netless volleyball game. What about that? For the most part, I feel sports games lost their way sometime in the 16-bit era and quit being enjoyable. In any event, any sports games Dreamcast or later are things I don't even want to bother myself with attempting to play. +wongojack
Growing up it was really sports games that turned me into a gamer. In what seems to be an odd combination of gaming preferences, I really spent a lot of time playing RPGs and Sports games, and I really enjoyed the simulation games as they got going. I wanted more and more Sim and couldn't get enough. Lately though, I haven't really been able to make myself play sports games. I think I sort of maxed out with them kinda like when you listen to a hit song too many times. Here would be my personal top list: 2600 Championship Soccer - The game that taught me what the select switch did Handheld Mattel Football 2 C64 Epyx "Games" series I assume you know these already - still fun today Street Sports Series (I played Football the most) WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW Superstar Series (First real dip into Sports Simulation for me. I played Omni Play Basketball the most) Skate or Die Microprose Soccer (Keith von Eron's in the USA) WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW 1 on 1 Leaderboard Golf Hardball WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW Avoid - NBA by Avalon Hill and John Madden Football (too much simulation and not enough game) Avoid - Touchdown football and International Soccer (not worth going back to) NES Tecmo Bowl (I played the original more) WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW Mike Tyson's PO I assume you know this one already - still fun Pro Wrestling Ice Hockey WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW Double Dribble RBI Baseball WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW Baseball Stars T&C Surf Designs Tennis Avoid - Major League Baseball (just play RBI instead) PC Earl Weaver's Baseball Lakers vs Celtics and the NBA Playoffs Amiga Earl Weaver's (mostly played this version) Speedball World Champ Boxing Mgr Wayne Gretzky Hockey Arcade NBA Jams WORTH CHECKING OUT NOW 720 I have a huge gap in here where I didn't play a sports game again seriously until the PS1. I had a lot of fun with the Madden, FIFA and Gamebreaker series on PS1/PS2, but I haven't experimented much since then. I did play NFL Tour on 360 which was more arcade oriented and a pretty fun little game. I've never tried to get into the "Street" series of games, but something tells me I would like those. Also - Wii Sports. During my investigations into things that I missed when young, I discovered the Mario Tennis series which is really good. Championship Tennis on the Intellivision is also surprisingly fun IMO. Intv bowling and skiing probably should get mentioned here as well. I think that if I had to pick a game from each sports category and rank my personal top 10 it might be something like: FIFA Road to the World Cup '98 (PS1) Tecmo Bowl (NES) Summer Games (C64) Superstar Ice Hockey (C64) Mike Tyson's PO (NES) Earl Weaver's Baseball (Amiga/PC) NBA Jams (Arcade) Wii Sports (Wii) Skate or Die (C64) Mario Tennis (GBC)

+wongojack
Star League Baseball - Commodore 64 Mattel Football - Handheld I would have totally overlooked Mattel Football. It definitely deserves to be on a top sports game list. In the '80's I played lots of C64 Star League Baseball (usually got killed by the 'puter), Since 2 of you mentioned it, I had to look up "Star League Baseball." I did have that game too but it was listed on a compilation disk with other games simply as "Baseball." I never knew what it was called until today. It was pretty good for an early C64 BaseB game, but I think I already had Hard Ball (Bob Whitehead) by the time I played it.
