ACML
What appears to be a less than nice cosmetic Atari 800 going to $159+ and still may go higher. Every so I often I see an auction like this and think to myself, "this can't be legit". There has to be something more going on here than supply and demand. Why pay so much for what could easily be purchased for half the current rate. What is behind this type of madness? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-800-Computer-System-with-Programs-Games-Controller-Vintage-Joust-Pac-Man-/291357312168?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43d63fc4a8
flashjazzcat
You get a bunch of carts with it plus all the bits and pieces. Looks OK to me.
+sm3
Most of the people bidding, with the exception of 1, seem new to eBay. That might be part of the reason. They just haven't been around the block yet Besides, original 800s (non XL models) are stll rare.
kenjennings
While it appears to be in decent physical shape, and it has the power brick, still way overpriced. None of the games in the bundle are uncommon. though there are no dogs in the collection -- they're all decent games. Some carts are as common as dirt (to the point there are two duplicates in the set.) I'd bid max $75 for it only if I did not have most of the cartridges. Some fool jacked it from $100 up past $144. AtariGeezer
Yep, looks like a nooobie "Just has to have it", could be going on what the prices were in the 80's? who knows... The only not too common of a cart there is the "Star Raider" label variant.
ricortes
Nice turnkey system IMHO. Figure working base unit with power supply and J/S at least $70 and the carts would add another $70. Maybe a bit on the high side for a package deal but certainly not out of line yet. About the only thing needed to make a complete vintage gamer set would be a disk drive. Justin Payne
Overpriced? How about a beat up C64 box for $60. http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/sop/4829430037.html What would be interesting is to see if there is a trend is prices. Of course, there are a lot of variables. Rybags
I wouldn't pay anything near that - the carts are common + repeats and realistically for that bunch of 9 I'd pay well under 50 bucks. But the market can be funny - you could relist that tomorrow and maybe get 200 bucks, maybe get only 40 bucks.
Mclaneinc
Plus with Ebay there can be teams with the seller driving the price up although I'm not saying this is is the case in this instance but sadly it does happen.
ACML
I understand and respect everyone's feedback, but 800's in much nicer shape go for $75 all the time. This appears to have a Mitsumi keyboard. If so, I'd bet my paycheck the keyboard will be inoperative. This is the same fault that plagues 1200XLs. Anyway, either someone has not been paying attention or something nefarious is going on. I submitted this as one example of many I have noticed. I've also seen crazy purchases like this that you know is misrepresented and there is nothing but positive feedback. Just seems too fishy to me. Justin Payne
Just for my own knowledge, how can you tell it has a Mitsumi keyboard?
Kyle22
Check out this beat up 800 for $149.90. http://www.ebay.com/itm/A01879-ATARI-800-Personal-Computer-CX801-OS-10K-ROM-3x-CX853-16K-RAM-UNTESTED/390994428318?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D28791%26meid%3D61ffc91ffe29485d8d06808d79b6d6e7%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D291357312168 Who in their right mind would pay that much for that? ACML
Just for my own knowledge, how can you tell it has a Mitsumi keyboard?[/quote Its quite simple to distingish the Mitsumi from the Hi-Tec and Stackpole variants. Mitsumis are the same OEM that makes the 1200XL keyboards. The keys have a darker finish and have a high gloss that the Hi-Tek and Stackpoles do not. The high gloss is the real giveaway. They look, feel and fail the same as an Atari 1200XL keyboard. It's just oxidation of the mylar to PCB contacts and can easily be fixed. Many, lack the skill or patients to fix them. All this machine will be able to do is play cartridge games since Start, Select and Option keys will still work (not on mylar sheet on 800). kenjennings
Haha oh God, thanks for finding that. Gave a good laugh when I saw the condition in the picture. Good golly, that's insane. "Unable to test" instantly earns the doofus a $10 bid. If the label on the bottom is to be trusted looks like it may have once been sold as a 5200 game system for $65.
Kyle22
In the listing, it also says: Functional Status: Fully Working and Guaranteed This is most likely because he chose USED instead of AS-IS for PARTS. ebay has gone downhill.... Seriously, this one isn't even worth it as a parts machine - crap keyboard, crap case, and is that mold / water damage on the bottom?? kenjennings
Or this one: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 221671170156 I got an xm301 on ebay a couple years ago for $12. To use the case for sio2sd.
kenjennings
You're all missing the real bargains Here and Here Dude! You're missing the fact that 65XE comes with a DELUXE A/V cable! That's clearly the other $260 of the asking price. And can't forget the 3 Hour battery pack with new NI-MH batteries and 7 1/2 hour battery charger. Wait, whut??? There was an Atari 8-bit computer that ran on batteries? No. I thought not.
+Stephen
I got an xm301 on ebay a couple years ago for $12. To use the case for sio2sd. It's an XM301, not an XM300. He clearly needed to make the BIN price $301.

Cool, I have 3 of the xm301's now, last one was $5 and was from a local ebay seller, so no shipping charges. Only cost 70 cents of gas on my motorcycle
Tickled_Pink
You're all missing the real bargains Here and Here The UK one doesn't surprise me. There's one seller in particular who sells systems at over inflated prices. It looks to me that he buys them and does a little work to tidy them up before putting them on again. To be fair I've yet to see him really sell anything that looks like a heap of junk. And guess what? He currently has an 800 for sale as well: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-VINTAGE-ATARI-800-COMPUTER-SYSTEM-VGC-/301212967929?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item4621b123f9 It makes one bid that I saw about 3 years ago look like an absolute bargain. I think it went for around £350. It had an 800 plus some boxed Atari hardware and a couple of crates of games. Recently I tried to bid on some faulty 1050s but even they went way beyond what I thought was decent. The UK eBay market for Atari gear sucks.
