Intellivision Space Battle?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask if there is a way to tell which version of Space Battle I have. Both the cart and rom versions. I read about the difference in the game from the red boxed and blue boxed versions with the later released blue box having a more challenging release of the game compared to the earlier red box release. I have 4 cart versions here and also have it on rom format for emulation. If anyone knows how to tell which version the cart is or which version the rom is, please let me know.

Thanks,

John

PS: I do have 3 red labeled carts and 1 White labeled if that helps determine anything.

I don't have an answer for Draugr, but I wondered if anyone has rom dumps of both speeds for Space Battle? I looked at my collection and I only have one Space Battle rom. So I either have the "slow" or "fast" one. Can anyone hook me up with rom images for both? I'm assuming these have been dumped many times over by now.

Well, you can always check out the rom image that we hacked to say "BS-Galactica" at the title (since it was supposed to be a Battlestar Galactica game)

Not sure which speed it was. All I do know is that there was a version that had 4 skill levels and another that had 5. The one with 5 was the most common.

It just occurred to me - should I be collecting both, in terms of physical releases? Is there any way to tell them apart? Or do people just play each, and label with sticky notes?

Given that guys distinguish variants based on the presence of a few extra characters in a copyright notice, I'm surprised there isn't more focus on this. Do we even know which is rarer?

I have yet to sort through my carts to see which ROM variants I have. Needless to say, I have a *cough* sizeable collection with many variants and duplicates. One reason I have put off unloading much of it is that I like to fully know exactly what I have. I find and correct copies with mismatched manuals and carts like if I receive a USA box with a Hong Kong manual. I'm also worried that the moment I sell off a duplicate I'll realize it was a rare variant. Many of the variants I've discovered were due to my being able to compare 8 copies of a game only to find a 9th that is slightly different. I didn't plan to acquire that many, and surely it's only some of the commons that I have many of (from buying in lots), but here we are. Oh yeah, back on topic....When I get some time I plan to make a list of known ROM cart variants, determine how to identify them, determine relative rarity of each, keep copies of each known variant, and sell off the rest. Someone should put together a spreadsheet to make my life easier ;-)

The only game I've played to check ROM variants is Lock 'n Chase. I really wanted to see what the "collapsing Lupin" looked like, and experience the better controls. I gave up after 20 or 30 copies.

As far as I'm aware, Armor Battle, Auto Racing, Checkers, Math Fun, Las Vegas Poker/BJ, Pac-Man, PGA Golf, and Space Battle are the original commercial releases with ROM variants (that actually hit cartridge form). I'm excluding protos and hacks and mods and such, and things that never actually saw the light of day. Did World Series Baseball actually come out on cart in both flavours?

You probably already know this, but I think the only released Collapsing Lupin was in one of the in-store demo carts. Unfortunately, the controls are worse there since... well... being a demo cart you have no control over what happens on the screen. :P
