Doctor Who Berzerk w/Speech

Doctor Who Berzerk has been done, twice, and Berzerk with sampled speech has been done.
But not together, until now!!! :love:

Faster player!
Choose enemy shots off, on normal, or diagonal!
Starting AtariVox support. Turn on/off with Difficulty Player 2 switch. Says 1 of 2 things every fire press.
Suggest phrases to say when events occur, like when Cyberman appears, player dies, etc.
Developers submit your speech strings, and try to make a British accent.
Other under-the-hood changes, like speech samples don't roll TV or lose sync, No Black Lines on left!!

No. I can't follow assembly enough to make a change like that.
Just a graphics hack with sound samples, and maybe AtariVox+ if I can add it in without breaking the game.
A small title screen like in Berzerk VE would be nice also.

You should switch between Daleks and Cybermen. I was going to suggest the Face of Boe in place of Evil Otto but he's an ally. :)

 

Also, The Doctor needs something... like a big hat and a scarf :)

Sorry, not knowledgeable enough to switch between Daleks and Cybermen.

I do, however, like the hat idea. A lot!

 

Let me know if anything is broken.

 

To do:

Probably going to 32K so it can be really chatty.

Titlescreen. Already designed, but I may be too newbie to hack in a 48-pixel routine.

Here is a more sci-fi gunfire sound.

 

You can change the player, enemies, background and logo colors to whatever you would like. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the ideas and actual hacking!

I like the gray player so the Cyberman is silver.

I need a changed player shooting sound. I like what you have, but wish it wouldn't go down in pitch.

The Doctor does not ever use a gun. He has a Sonic Screwdriver that emits sonic waves. The waves break up the enemies, or maybe the frequency causes them to self destruct? I need a sonic wave sound.

 

The game should start with Selection 2 so the Cyberman gives chase, but can be zapped back to the start. Selection 6 has the Cyberman, but zapping it doesn't affect its chasing you.

Berzerk was made when Atari had the first version of the game set to easy. (Which is the opposite of E.T. which starts at the hardest selection!?)

 

I am probably going to 32K which still keeps cart making easy, but will allow more speech and I'd like to try to have other enemies, maybe Cybermen with a chasing Dalek?

 

Anyway, I've just started this hack, but the nice thing about a hack is you can share a playable game right away.

The sonic screwdriver was used to disable the emotion inhibitor in the series...causing them to self-destruct unless they manage to re-enable it shortly afterward.

 

Exactly cause 99.9 percent of the time the good Doctor wouldn't carry a gun let alone use one (but he has once or twice over the last 50+ years).

Instead of Boe you could go with an early Cyberman head. But Boe really isn't out of the question cause as we know Capt. Jack was always out for #1 at the end of the day.

Wish this was out when I was a kid! The samples are fantastic. :D

 

Maybe go with an overcoat and scarf look? And an upright sonic to look like less like a gun?

I'll try an overcoat look. Great idea.

Thing is, the colors slide up and down a bit depending on player position, so you need to design something that minimizes this behavior.

 

I'm just making a fun graphic / speech hack.

I wish I could add more advanced things, like K-9!

Starting from scratch I'd have the limitation of batari Basic multisprite which has 5 sprites, or DPC+ which has 10 sprites, but it would be a long time to get something playable, plus SpiceWare is making "Frantic" which will be Berzerk/Frenzy with updated graphics and "speech without blanking the screen!"
