gamer-stu
Well, I had to consult several websites and make a few guesses, but I was able to install my new Ultimate 1 Meg in my 800xl. Does anyone know if there is some sort of "missing manual" out there? I'd like to know how to flash the extra rom slots in particular. gozar
Use Flashjazzcat's UFlash to flash it. It's an awesome piece of software. I flashed Assembler/Editor into one slot and Deluxe Invaders into another. Probably should put Star Raiders into the last one. :-)
gamer-stu
Awesome gozar, this is going to make life so much easier. Thank you.
Marius
It's an awesome upgrade. Probably even the best ever created. Candle did a great job there. imho it deserves a much better and detailed documentation. Both for programmers and hardware people, not even to mention newbies. Lotharek delivers a great new pcb which is awesome but he doesn't even provide the stuff to mount the pcb right in the atari. This upgrade deserves better. It's awesomely good. FJC is awesome. He understands the atari crowd and writes terrific stuff. Thanks to his tools the ultimate 1mb upgrade gets a lot more user friendly.
gamer-stu
Is there any way to load ROMs using UFLASH.XEX without having a SIDE2? I've tried using SIO2SD but I can't figure out how to get the ROMs to load from there in to Uflash.
flashjazzcat
You should be able to load the ROMs from any volume using the file selector. What exact problems are you experiencing?
gamer-stu
I have a fundamental lack of understanding for the way the SIO2SD handles ROM images vs ATRs vs XEXs I'm afraid. I tried to load the Assembler Editor cartridge ROM on to the sd card, mount the image to D2 with the SIO2SD and then point to D2 with Uflash CAR1. It didn't see the ROM. I also put it in to an ATR and mounted the ATR without success.

You'll need the ROM in an ATR file.
flashjazzcat
As said above: please put the desired ROMs on a formatted ATR.
gamer-stu
As said above: please put the desired ROMs on a formatted ATR. Thank you flashjazzcat and gozar. Unfortunately I still can't get uFlash 1 to present anything in the directory. I have tried both a standard AtariDos 2.5 image and a SpartaDos image. I know that there is user error somewhere, but I just don't know where. If you have the time/interest in looking at what I am trying to mount, I have attached the ATRs. flashjazzcat
Works fine here. Lunched UFlash under SDX (type "UFlash.xex"), mounted ATRROM.ATR on D1:, pressed "Enter" on the top entry in the list, and the file selector came up:

That was the nature of my user error! I had loaded Uflash.xex directly in to an SIO2SD drive and loaded it via a COLD /N. Once I installed Uflash.xex to the SDX disk image and loaded it from SDX it all fell in to place. Thank you!
flashjazzcat
Yep: it needs DOS.
Stefan Both
By the way, In Ultimate menu, there is a choice: BasicSlot is CAR1...CAR2...CAR3 etc. a) what is it good for? b) What is possible to flash into...? Stefan
flashjazzcat
I put Altirra BASIC in one of the other cart slots, and the Assembler editor in another. The boot loader for the GUI will also use one of the 8K cart banks.
Stefan Both
So, how to see, witch CAR:'s are still free? And, can I flash whatever ROM file I want, as long as it has 8k? For example the Missle Command, I never use it, can it be replaced? Stefan
flashjazzcat
Yes you can put any 8K ROM in those slots. With a lot of clever editing of the cart's banking code and the use of multiple slots, it would probably be possible to hack MAC/65 or a similar banked cartridge in there too. There's a challenge for someone. The only 8KB cart slot in use by default on an XE is the BASIC slot. So you have three free cart slots, and the four XEGS slots. Note you can name the slots too; this helps to keep track of what they contain: Edited February 6, 2015 by flashjazzcat
Stefan Both
Great! Again, you helped me with your knowledge! I'll try it.

flashjazzcat
So how can I use the XEGS slots? In an XEGS presumably. On the XL/XE I'm assuming they're spare room.
Kyle22
I wired my 1200XL to look like an XEGS, and the U1M XEGS slots work perfectly. I forget how I did it now, but it was fairly easy, I just compared the schematics of the two.

Lol, that's what I thought, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. :-) So is the XEGS jumper on the U1M used for XEGS installations?
