When does a great TI idea become 'open season'? (Ethical question)

I know a guy that had a great idea for the TI, but in over a year has made absolutely no attempt to do anything with it, in fact I doubt he ever will. This idea not appear too difficult to accomplish (with three or four of you here) and I believe the final cost would be relatively low. What's more, I think at least 75% of the people here with PEB's would want one.

It's such an obvious idea, I'm actually shocked no one in the TI community has never done it before.

Any suggestions on the course of action I should take? Should I post the idea here and see where it takes us, or just hope that sometime in the future he does something with it?

Seriously though... a simple PM would be a good start.

Okay, I did that that and got an answer. CantStopClicking came up with this idea over a year ago, unfortunately he has no time to do anything with it, so here it is:

Put three 3.5" Drives in the single full height P-Box drive bay. Yes, 3 drives WILL fit, but there is no cage to hold three of them or a suitable face plate currently available. Now I was thinking, with these 3D printers out there, and a few guys online here that have the knowledge to use them, and the capability to actually make them, we could make use of their talent and capability to expand all our systems.

So, with the new Myarc 720 K clone on the horizon (probably within the year), and people upgrading to the Lotharek HxC's and buying inexpensive 3.5" drives, this would be the perfect time to get on the ball and design this. I don't know about you guys, but I would LOVE to put two 3.5" drives & my HxC in the P-Box.

So what do you guys think? Is this a great idea or what?

I have a bracket which holds three 3.5" devices in the space of single-height 5.25". I will take a picture and post it. I used it in my server to build RAID arrays in smaller space. The only problem with this bracket is it is not open in the front, rather it has a fan mounted there for cooling.

For really twisted strangeness, there is also the option of hunting down some of the old BASF 1/3 height 5.25 drives. They are the same thickness as the 3.5 drives--so you coud put two 3.5s and a 5.25 or three 5.25s, or any of the combinations in between into the PEB. The BASF drives are hard to find--but even finding one would let you keep one 5.25 drive in there with the two 3.5s for disk compatibility purposes. There were a lot of these in circulation in Germany during the late eighties. . .I considered buying some then, but went for a pair of half-height, 360K 3.5s instead.

Actually, when I went hunting the BASF drives, they were 2/3 height. I remember that I wanted to put three of them into a double drive enclosure I had back then--but then I discovered half-height drives and went in a different direction. . .I've seen evidence that EPSON may have made 1/3 height drives though.
