If you could change one thing about an existing Jaguar title...

This is strictly for fun; obviously not likely to happen (i.e. won't.)

If I could change one Jaguar title, it would be to turn Double Dragon IV into an arcade style beat-em-up (and a good one) rather than a one on one fighter. I know plenty of people have had this idea but it's just always been stuck in my head as the one thing I'd do if I could. Not only would it be a good two player game but it'd be nice to have a great beat em up from the DD franchise on the Jaguar. I actually love the box art and graphic style of the game, just wish it was a different genre and the gameplay was better.

What would you change, if you could change only one game? What's priority number 1?

I would have the background music in Doom. They looked pretty weak dropping such an awesome LOOKING game that PLAYS sooo great, but saying "Nah..it'll take a little too much ram (same excuse that old school Atari programmers had to deal with!).", and leaving out the in game music! I think it may have been to preserve the sellability of the PC game, which was still available at the time of the Jag release, and the RAM could just be the excuse!?! The game is so good that it's worth having without the background music, and I stop in between levels to listen to the Jags sound hardware play that awesome music right out of the chip set.

I totally agree with you Stargunner, about the Double Dragon game, though. They really needed to go Super Double Dragon and use that graphics prowess that the Jaguar clearly has! Mayhaps that should be the first endeavor in Raptor programming I should attempt!! I would draw all the graphics from the ground up and keep the resolution up!

I heard that it would have taken one chunk up on the RAM scale to have the music play at the same time as the graphics and this would cost more, so we got the musicless levels. I guess that is an easier blame then the "I'm too weak of a programmer to include the music!" one..

Other programmers complained of the difficulty in making software for the Jaguar, so it makes sense. Atari saying it needs to be left out to make more money makes sense too, though. Atari was one of the first to pi$$ off programmers by leaving out credit and eventually cutting them out all together (the reason for Activision!!). Just look at the most recent creation here on the forum, Pacman 8K, and you see what doubling the RAM could have possibly given people back in the day! I love Doom music, too. I would hate to think some programmer was like "Crap, I can't do the music, so I won't!". I saw recently an MP3 device that mixes the music with the game on a Jaguar inspired website, though!!

Double Dragon - Yeh I was disappointed when I found out it was a one on one game. I loved the first Double Dragon game, especially when you get the bat!

Doom - Lack of music didn't bother me so much as the lack of the last boss level. Still think it is one of the best ports of Doom out there.

Checkered Flag - Did you try CJ's (I believe it was) modification of the Checkered Flag controls.

My wish currently:

Battlemorph as a cartridge.

Wolfenstein 3D with the ability to select the knife (and keep the bullets)

Alien Vs. Predator remembering which adversaries were killed with the game save.

Attack of the Mutant Penguins with opening starting levels up to 20. Right now only 1-16.

Bubsy starting on Ali Baba Levels instead of Alice in Wonderland.

Towers 2 with more adversaries and content.

@Papa:I put the 'issue' regarding no in-game music to Dave Taylor when i spoke to him, he did'nt seem to think it was a Ram Issue:

Maybe IF Likes of RetroGamer Magazine had asked John about this and claims of Jaguar Quake, when they interviewed him, we'd not have to rely on speculation and guess work.
I've had a crack at getting the answers myself, hence the Dave Taylor interview and contacting I.D themselves, but i've not the clout of a major publishing company behind me.
Dave was clearly NOT a fan of the Jaguar hardware, but as he said this was his 1st conversion to console work he'd attempted, so i'm personally not going to be too hard on him.
In Game Music did'nt exactly 'save' the 32X version, so i was happy with Jaguar Doom.Never took to music in PC version to be honest, only the PS1 music, which was all kinds of awesome.

Anywho, personal choices:

AVP-I'd of had (if it were technically possible) the acid puddles given an option to be turned off, as they did frustrate.
Hover Strike needed some serious work on the controls.
Syndicate:I really wish Ocean had'nt put in that pointless Zoom feature.
Defender 2000:Either given to someone else to code (sorry Jeff, but you and Defender never really worked for me on any format) or reduced main ship size, made the visuals look a damn sight more stylish, basically given Jeff a professional graphics artist.

I'd put a game in Blackout - the presentation obviously had a lot of work put into it, so it's a shame.

Change absolutely everything about Mad Bodies. But if I had to pick just one thing, it'd be the absolutely horrible clipping of the sprites as they enter the screen, however the 'colour cycling' on the high score screen scores high marks here.

The Public Relations team for BattleSphere.

And, just for good measure.....

The entire game engine for Project One, and the controls in Beebris ;)

Strictly limiting it to one aspect:

Further draw distance in Battlemorph would top my list. It's a great game, but every time I take a month or two break from the game and come back I always find myself thinking I don't remember the draw distance being that bad!

Would have also liked more textures in AVP for more environment diversity so there are landmarks and you actually have a sense of where you are without the map.

Some other games would've been cooler had the ports been a little better - doom, NBA Jam TE.

Off the top of my head I'd say:

Supercross 3d- Improved Framerate

Checkered Flag- Improved Controls

Atari Karts- Different Unique fun weapons/powers to use against opponents.

World Tour Racing- Improved Framerate

Power Drive Rally- Remove drive tests lol

Val D Ski/snwbord- Less elevation changes in such quick succession, better placement of gates.

Ruiner Pinball- More Tables!

Syndicate- Remove Zoom feature

Defender2000- Smaller ship, further camera angle.

Raiden- Would be cool to see in true "full screen" without the side being covered.

Breakout2000- Improved game speed

Soccer Kid- Further away camera angle to see more of the environment.

Highlander-Improved control and combat mechanics.

just some quick ones off the top of my mind =)

Can't pick just one! Of the games I care about:

WTR is a great candidate for some kind of optimization framerate/control wise. CF has been worked on and patched, which helps a lot, but it's still CF.

Zool 2 and Wolfenstein both need to be slowed down a bit as they run too fast.

Hoverstrike cartridge plays like ass. Suffers from the same choppiness the likes of Supercross/CF/WTR/WMCJ, etc.

Pinball Fantasies needs better ball travel math. Way too stiff as it is.

Ruiner Pinball, well… besides the physics and choppiness, I'd do something with the color palate so it doesn't look so cartoony. Fine when the playfield plastics and targets are that colorful or detailed, but not the entire playfield art IMO. Needs to have better delineation that way.

The Highlander would be a great game if only MacCleod operated quicker or had better response.

I-War is almost fine as-is, just needs its gameplay sped up a bit. Or smoother.

Defender 2000 could use some sprite shrinkage, especially your players ship.

Total Carnage needs to utilize the 6-button controller more appropriately to emulate a cross-hair config on the action buttons.

Interesting possibility. Haven't heard (or thought) about that before.

As for me, i'd love to have had the planned use of an Atari Lynx as a motion sensor when connected to a Jaguar playing AvP!

And of course, wish that Jeff made Gauntlet 2000 instead of Defender 2000!! :-D

Never in a million years would Doom's music be left out of the Jaguar version to "preserve the sellability of the PC game,...". Why this myth that companies would deliberately sabotage their own products continues to persist is beyond me.

I would fix Trevor McFur which I suppose would be an overhaul, but I think it's close to being a good shmup, just good, not great:

-Background music must be added first, and something different than whatever that weird bubbly music is during attract mode.

-Go ahead and map the shot and bomb actions to the same button, like the Darius series. No need for separate buttons here.
-Shorten the asteroid field stages by half, those go on for far too long.

-Add rapid fire option

-Procontroller support, map the shoulder buttons to cycle through special weapons forward and back.

The enemy AI is not great and yadda yadda, but I do like the graphics overall, and some of the enemy designs are neato, even if they are really just random things the developer through in the game. I think with those few improvements, the game would be much funner to play. Even as it is currently, it's not the worst shmup around, as I've played some real stinkers lately on SNES.

AvP - Make the Alien Scenario better. Make weapons and keycards easier to find as the Marine. Make the map so it saves and not always refreshes, especially air duct system.

Cybermorph - music during gameplay, similar to the cool opening music.

Iron Soldier - Make the mech faster...

Doom - the music from in between levels, add to gameplay...

Tempest 2000 - remove level 64.

Rayman - make it easier in general, sheesh.

Highlander - make the main character decent looking with texture mapped polys, vastly improve controls...

Battlesphere - make it easier to understand what exactly to do and where to go.....

Jaguar system itself, have stock rgb plug coming from system. dust flaps on back and cart slot.

Jag CD system - needs better cool less toilet design and better durability.

Dino Dudes, make the characters move a lot faster.

Bubsy - give him 3 to 5 hits from enemies before he dies.

towers II - needs way more hints on what to do, where to go.

Iron soldier 1 and 2. Make these games easier and get rid of the escort missions. I hate those missions with a passion.

supercross 3d, give the option to play with less texture maps so the game is faster / smoother.

club drive, improve slippery controls.

trevor mcfur, add in game music.

Ataris handling of Jaguar - should have started using tempest 2000 as pack in game with system april 1994. should have released jag cd September 1994 instead of September 1995, should have made sure to get mortal kombat 3 and tomb raider on jag cd at all costs. should have tried to get rayman as jaguar mascot game, somehow buying out / convincing ubisoft.. atleast for a year or 2. should have convinced ubisoft to do the 2d rayman sequal on jag cd...

checkered flag. should have atleast improved framerate a little and vastly improved controls

attack of the mutant penguins. should have made the game less complex and complicated.

syndicate, needs to be less complex and complicated.

Atari karts - get rid of so many course obstacles and sticky walls. get rid of bounce off opponent physics. make game less difficult.

We all know what they were trying to achieve with Raiden's funky vertical strip that takes up more than its fair share of space on your TV - but it just comes off all wrong. I've always strongly disliked seeing artwork and bezel art forced on the sides of the screen. Too many companies pulled that shit in the 90's for my tastes. Ugly, ugly stuff. :(

There exist better, more tasteful options. Being able to 'disable' altogether is one of them.

One of the only things I like about the original playstation was the added "tate" mode for arcade shmups, really a shame more systems didn't figure that one out. Then again, I use it on a 19" flat screen that I can literally hold in between my knees and play, suppose on those old CRT's it would have been a pain in the ass...
