atarilovesyou
Guys, just trying to find out if a version of an old game "Elite" was released for non PAL Nintendo Entertainment Systems. I'm sure somebody here knows...thanks!
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Pretty sure the NTSC version was never published officially. There is a ROM for the unreleased NTSC version though: http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/nes/
Mayhem
Yep, it was PAL release only.
atarilovesyou
Thanks guys!...it looks cool, but after a few more youtube videos, I'm pretty sure I won't work too hard to get this game happening. Cool concept though!
Csonicgo
I hate to necrobump this sucker, but I've flashed the ELITE NTSC ROM to a cart and it's as stable as an earthquake. What does work, the polygon renderer, is cut off at the last few horizontal rows of tiles, the result is as complete garbage in the tiles. Yes, it's one of those games- it would take a disassembly to fix, and maybe that wouldn't be enough since the VBLANK may not be long enough to dump the CHR tiles onto the screen. 1
Prosystemsearch
Maybe someday, there will be a proper conversion of NES Elite into NTSC format...
0078265317
Horoleg GameKey is very rare. But it allows you to use pal carts on nes. http://www.nesworld.com/gamekey.php
Tanooki
There's a proper NES NTSC release, the old maker of the game shoveled it out probably 10+ years ago on his old website but it never was put to an honest licensed cart outside of the PAL region. Also PAL games (mostly) work on the NTSC original style NES if you chop PIN4 on the 10NES lockout chip, and stock (it lacks that garbage) with the top loader. I used to have PAL Parodius and enjoy it, had a friend with probably a dozen PAL titles he'd use. Csonicgo
It still needs some work to pass from "works in an emulator" status to "works on hardware" status. Unfortunately, that's where all hell will break loose- emulators being built with HLE techniques will run them fine, while cycle-accurate ones will garble. Nestopia barely plays it before the pilot screen, which the character's face isn't drawn into hits HAIR - the weirdest thing I've seen in a long time. Asaki
I hate to necrobump this sucker, but I've flashed the ELITE NTSC ROM to a cart and it's as stable as an earthquake. What does work, the polygon renderer, is cut off at the last few horizontal rows of tiles, the result is as complete garbage in the tiles. That's interesting, I get the same thing when I run the ROM (or the PAL ROM) on an Everdrive. I thought maybe it was just the EDN8 at fault. IIRC, it also had issues with the prototype of Hard Drivin'.
high voltage
Official US release was on Apple ][.
Prosystemsearch
Official US release was on Apple ][. Also, C64, Amiga, IBM PC and/or Tandy 1000, and Atari ST. In addition to that there is also a Plus version of the first Elite Game made exclusive to the IBM MS.DOS-running PS/1 computers. high voltage
Yes, but are they official US releases from Firebird Licensees, or just the UK Firebird versions available in USA?
Asaki
...none of those versions of the game will run on the Nintendo Entertainment System, though
Flojomojo
...none of those versions of the game will run on the Nintendo Entertainment System, though I chased this game for a while, too ... I don't have a cartridge, but I did get the printed "novella" from eBay long ago, and the ROM goes on any NES emulation I do. If you want to play Elite with a D-pad, the GBA remake is the one to play. There are two versions: Elite TNK ("the new kind") and Elite AGB. Attached for your pleasure. newkindgba-1.7.1.zipeliteagb-0.5.2.zip

Official releases. I have the boxed Apple II and C-64 Firebird releases. I also have the BBC Micro Acornsoft version. TheRedEye
My assumption has always been that the "NTSC" ROM was hacked way back in the day to render properly in emulators of the time, and is not actually an NTSC version of the game.
Asaki
My assumption has always been that the "NTSC" ROM was hacked way back in the day to render properly in emulators of the time, and is not actually an NTSC version of the game. I think I read somewhere that the original PAL version takes advantage of the lower framerate to do extra processing in-between frames, and I would assume that the NTSC version, being an unfinished beta, is only a minimal conversion. It would explain why both versions have the same glitchy-ness on an NTSC machine.
Shawn
Horoleg GameKey is very rare. But it allows you to use pal carts on nes. http://www.nesworld.com/gamekey.php This is for bypassing the lockout chip and nothing else. It will not make any game magically change it's programming. MrMark0673
Necro. Out of the blue someone hit me up about this proto I owned years back, so I figured I'd do a quick google and see if people were looking for it. Video taken many years back of the proto that I owned running on the NES (dumped and through a PowerPak). I can't seem to find the actual proto chip, might have sold it some years back, but the game is preserved and runs on unmodified NTSC hardware. This ROM is not readily available on the internet. Hadn't thought about this (or really any of my other protos) in quite some time, but figured people would want to know that there was an intended release and the game got far enough into development to run on NTSC hardware.

Tanooki
Shame it has not been put out there though after all this time post-rediscovery. It looked solid to me years ago when I recall that dropping into view on NA.

Do you plan to eventually release this "elite_ntsc_probably_good.nes" or what's the hiccup? It's been a while. MrMark0673
I sold the EPROM years back, so no, I do not intend to release any ROM. The new owners seemed to have some sort of plan for it, but that was years ago. *shrug*
ColecoKing
I didn't even know Elite was own the NES, is it even playable?
