Black Box & Ultimate 1 MB?

Larry

Recommended Posts

I just hooked up my BB with my 800XL that has the Ultimate in it. No go -- just a black screen and if I press HELP + RESET, I get a rolling screen with spurious characters on it.

No big deal since I rarely have the BB out anymore, but thought I'd check if anyone else has had this same experience. (Man, that BB is BIG, even with an ACARD compact flash adapter!) BTW, IDE+2 works just fine as does MyIDE-II. Haven't tried the MIO yet, but I'll get one out soon.

Edit: I thought that perhaps I had a problem with the FB working loose from the BB, but I just checked the BB/FB with a stock XE and it works great. Looks like these are incompatible.

The BlackBox and Ultimate 1MB are not 100% compatible.

You can not go to BASIC while the Blackbox AND the Ultimate 1MB are connected.

Hi Marius-

I have the floppy board attached (Rom Ver. 2.16), so perhaps that compounds the issues. From what you are saying, your BB will boot to Dos when attached to the Ultimate? And was your testing with a FB attached to the BB?

Hi Larry!

No I meant something different. I don't have the Floppy Board. I was not actually replying to your particular black screen problem, but to the question whether blackbox and ultimate 1 mb are compatible or not.

When you use the blackbox on an atari 8bit with Ultimate 1MB installed, you can do everything, except jumping to basic.

So boot your DOS, go to basic, and BAM... your atari freezes.

When you use a Basic on cart you do not have this issue. When you use Basic as a binary file, you do not have this issue.

It's only with the built in basic.

Thanks, Marius! You get further than I do. On an XE with the Ultimate, I can get the Ultimate setup screen. But if I boot I get a black screen and an odd tone. On an XL with the Ultimate, can't even get the setup screen for more than a moment, then the display goes haywire. Booting results in the same black screen and tone. Middle "C" I think. ;)
