Orange-Phantom
Hello! I'm new here but have been lucky enough to have a Lynx when it first came out and then swapped it for a Lynx 2 which I still have plus 4 others. Of them 2 are broken and I've got an original replacement screen off E-bay for one of them and I've just got in the post this weekend McWill's amazing replacement screen which is going to get my first Lynx 2 back into action in a major upgrade way! (I can't wait)! Now this has got me thinking of upgrading the rather tinny sounding speaker inside the Lynx to something more substantial at the same time. I've had a quick look on E-bay Google etc and can find a nice 8ohm 40mm speaker but the problem is that it's 20mm in depth which is not going to fit! Doh! I'm not going to give up just yet on the quest for improved audio but am throwing this one out to all of the Lynx aficionados to see if anyone else has upgraded the speaker or knows of a really good sounding replacement (well as good as you can get for a 40mm speaker). I'm thinking of something like this except 8ohm or 16ohm and that actually fits! http://www.dx.com/p/3w-40mm-speaker-driver-unit-black-4-ohm-122521?tc=GBP&gclid=CKqsgryIiMQCFUHmwgodqG8AiA#reviews Now having a Lynx with McWill's screen, better sounding audio and a Lynx Multi Cart would be as close as to the ultimate Lynx setup as I can think! Thanks everyone.
Songbird
Why not just plug in a small non-powered set of stereo speakers into the headphone jack? Not as nice as an embedded solution, but you'll get a significant improvement in quality including true stereo.
KevinMos3
My Lynx II speaker sounds really distorted after not having been played in years. I thought it might be a capacitor problem, but after replacing all of them, realized it was the speaker. I couldn't find a 16 ohm speaker, so I ordered a 4-pack on amazon of 32ohm .5 watt speakers (twice the wattage of the original). My plan is to put an extra speaker inside the Lynx (probably on the side of the D-pad), so the ohms will be brought down to the original 16. For a home console solution, I also have McWill's VGA upgrade and purchased a VGA to composite adapter that also has an audio plug to fit the lynx. This should be a perfect solution for playing the Lynx on my TV with stereo sound through the entertainment system. Orange-Phantom
Funnily enough Songbird it was when I was painting the Garage, I had my phone plugged into a set of small battery powered Creative Speakers that gave me the idea for improving the internal Lynx speaker as the Creative speakers themselves are about 40mm each. I've gone an ordered these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331097969562?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT so when they arrive I'll post my findings. Worth a go methinks! When I get finally McWill's screen installed and I have a go on my TV, I'm going to plug the audio straight into my amp. So basically I'm going to have a over the top picture coupled with over the top audio from my Lynx... I can't wait!
7800fan
Why stop at the tiny speakers? If you were to take the difference between stock LCD and the improved LCD, and apply them to sound system, you would probably need this sound system:
KevinMos3
I've gone an ordered these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331097969562?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT so when they arrive I'll post my findings. I look forward to hearing about the results. If they sound a lot better than stock, I'll get some myself. I'll also post about the ones I bought on amazon. BadPricey
Senheiser HD-25 headphones are all you need. My 2013 phone has a speaker which is terrible. Headphones all the way on portable devices. Then you get true stereo effect on the Lynx 2.
Twoface2
Wouldn't a 4 Ohm speaker simply do the job? IIRC the Lynx 1 uses one and it has a real soundblast compared to Lynx 2. You should check if Lynx 1 and 2 use the same amplifier.

You should check if Lynx 1 and 2 use the same amplifier. I thought a Lynx 1 used a 8 Ohm speaker. I've also wondered about the differences between a Lynx I and II sound components. I would assume they are different since the Lynx II has stereo, but I'd like to hear from someone with knowledge on the subject. Also, I'd like to know the Ohm limits before we'd cause damage to our Lynxes. On a separate note: I received a pack of 8 Ohm .5 watt 40mm speakers today, (I'm still waiting on the 32 Ohm ones that I plan to use in parallel). The new 8 Ohm speaker sounds quite nice -- much better than the replacement speaker I took from a dead Lynx. I don't think it's any louder, but it sounds clearer. +karri
C'mon guys. You are talking about a polynomial counter worth 25 ¢ that produces a beep. From EPYX Docs The original design goals were that the circuits: 1. be cheap 2. require relatively little cpu help to make useful game noises 3. have sufficient range and accuracy for tolerable music 4. have 4 channels 5. have direct access to the DACs. 6. be cheap. LX.NET
LOL. Still it is able to make nice beeps, Karri
GoldenGraham
Also very interested in upgrading the Lynx II stock speaker if anyone has any suggestions?
Level42
I just ordered this speaker: http://www.visaton.com/en/industrie/klein/bf45_4.html My plan is to install this in my Lynx 1. I have always preferred the 1 over the 2 for several reasons and the much better sound quality is a big one of those reasons. However, being kind of an auiophile and coming across this speaker on a YouTube video ( https://youtu.be/CfsMB52p_9Q ) where it was used to improve the sound of an ancient 8-track portable player, so I wondered how much the Lynx might benefit from it. The diameter is slightly smaller but the height is almost identical to the original speaker so I hope it will fit easily, although the mounting holes of the plastic may have to be cut off.... The price is pretty damn steep at over 16 euro so it better be good. Expect delivery next Wednesday, will report back.
