Got a scare from my Jaguar CD today

Had a great scare this morning from my Jaguar cd. Just after getting past the title screen in Battlemorph the image on the screen froze and the Jag CD stoped spinning and the unit started making a loud squelling sound. I instantly turned my Jaguar off and after a few minutes of panic thinking my Jag CD died I powered it back on and was able to play an hours worth of Battlemorph without issue. I've had this unit for 17 years so maybe the end is near.

I never had such issue with mine but sometimes the CD is not read correctly. In this case a simple turn off then on again is enough to fix the problem.

I've had it, it's like the motor is trying to tell the head (or whatever it's called in a CD drive) to move when it's already grinding up as far as it can go. No idea if it's an inherent flaw or bug in the hardware or firmware, but I've seen it on more than one unit. Doing the IT support guy automatic response and turning it off and on again "fixes" it. If you let it sit there grinding away or happen to be off making a cup of tea when it does it, I imagine it might find its way to making the motor and moving bits part ways is a spectacular fashion.

The only way to guarantee a certain outcome when it comes to the Jsguar CD is to just do the first part of the advice - turn it off. That way you'll never have problems again. Of course, you'll never get the play the CD games again, either.

maybe the cable is broken to the end of cd sensor, this would cause the motor to constantly attempt to push the laser as it doesn't know that it has reached the end, however if it is all right again after a power cycle probably not as the cable wont magically repair itself after it is broken

very odd indeed

Yeah, it happens, I usually get occasional grinding/clicking sound from a few units rather than a high-pitched squealing and I have one JagCD that will not be fixed by soldering in a new CD Transport as it goes clickety-click-click with the old or new transport in, lol, so i have to send that one to Best Electronics soon for a hopeful repair by someone that knows how to fix parts on it other than just the basic CD transport changeout which I can do -its just 6 wires on a little harness.

That problem happened to me about 10 years ago with my jag CD, I just opened it up and manually moved the transport eye to give the CD unit the "space it needed to finish it's routine" and the problem stopped after that and I haven't had the problem since. I too, had a scare yesterday myself with my unit again also. I had been playing it for a bit and shut it off to change games and when I turned the Jag on again, I just got a black screen. Not the usual CD unit "no power" screen pointing to the back of the unit, or the red screen of death, etc., just black. This was the first time this ever happened. First I swapped power with the base unit, then tried it out alone and the jag powered up, so the adapter is good. tried re-seating the CD unit several times and removing and inserting the memory cartridge with no luck. So I cleaned the CD units edge connector and and the Jag's cartridge port, that turned out to be it, my JagCd spun back to life and works like new again, still. It had been a long time since I cleaned it. Usually when I'm having problems with the Cd unit it's the CD's cart port or the memory track that need to be cleaned. I leave my CD unit permanently attached to the Jag. But she's 20 years old and still works like new for me.And it still gets used for at least several hours a week, if not every day, for everything from official CD games, home-brews, TONS of CD-R use with home-brews and cinepak stuff, not to mention music CD's with the VLM. I've never used any CD/DVD/Console more than this unit.

Though I can also say the same of my 3DO FZ-1 player too, second most played disc machine...

It could be that the eye was not finished resetting itself when shut off and ran through a complete reset cycle when it was in the center of the loop!?! It happens.

Death to all spinny things! :P

(..that was joke. I have many, many spinny things to the point that it would suck if they all died. They will all die, though..and that does SUCK!) :skull:

I can only assume this is the reason, but with a lot of equipment like this... the grease that's used to give the mechanicals the ability to move easily... well, that grease tends to dry out and turn into almost like a cement after a while. The only thing you can really do to solve that problem is clean out the grease, and re-grease it with fresh white Lithium grease.
