BassGuitari
Jaguar: I really want to play Highlander for some reason, but spending hundreds of dollars on a Jaguar CD? And most of the best cart games are very pricy. You really aren't missing much with Highlander, especially for the price of a Jaguar CD. Spend that money instead on something that won't make you say "Shit, I paid $XXX for THIS?!" Collecting for the Jaguar in general strikes me as something of a fool's errand anyway. (Sit down, Jaguar people. ) I'd get the handful or two of A-list games -- loose -- and call it a day. The rest is expensive chaff. Nobody needs Club Drive or White Men Can't Jump.
omegadot
SNES: So many of the games worth owning. I recently disconnected the A/V from my switch because my emulation collection is just so much more complete and my saves are there. With these games released so often I can't justify the cost just to have the cart. =/
mbd30
MUSHA. The cartridge alone is selling for $250 on Amazon. Ridiculous. Various Neo-Geo games. I'll just play them in emulation.

phoenixdownita
If you are interested in just playing it why is turning to the "dark side" not an option? I've had the collector bugs a while ago but I stopped once I realized that the only thing I could do with any complete set was to ... resell it ... duh!!! I do not have enough space to keep them, I am not interested in opening a museum, buying originals will not get the money to the authors, so I get my retro-fix mostly via the "dark side" .... and most of them gets shredded pretty quickly .... I have nowhere near any complete set for any CD based console, not even worthy of the cheap CDRs. For all cart based systems with a flash based solution I play whatever works and maybe look out for a couple of the onse that don't but that's it (got Super Mario RPG for SNES as SA1 is still un-FPGA-ed). Recently I found out PC based emulation has come a long way and I can comfortably use either a PS3 or an XBOX 360 controller via USB (which is usually a much better solution than the original game pads in many, not all, cases {I love my Saturn 6 buttons controllers). Am I the only one reaching this point? I do have quite a few originals mind you. Astal I do have original (box, manual and everything else) but I didn't like it that much, there's a level with the water I didn't manage to pass even with AR/GS code for infinite lives .... it pissed me off to no end ... I will give it another try eventually ... just not this decade. Guardian Heroes also is one that I had to play with AR/GS code to see one of the ending and I have to say it takes a turn for the very weird in alter stage, not sure I understood it. I had to shell too much for a disc only, I believe it was the one that convinced me to turn to the "dark side". Rick Dangerous
If you are interested in just playing it why is turning to the "dark side" not an option? Believe it or not my cheap work PC's CR ROD drive has no burning feature, so it's not even an option for me at this point. Plus i'm just bad at that kind of stuff. I'm sure i'll figure it out eventually when the next computer comes along. I'm certainly not morally opposed to it given what people are charging on ePay for used games these days. karokoenig
I got the Tie Fighter CD Collectors edition for $15 Wow... Are PC games that expensive across the pond? That's crazy. I picked up that exact version for € 0.50 half a year ago. Big Box PC games are between €0.50 and €4 right now on flea markets. I actually shun most of them and just pick up the really classic titles (Tie Fighter, System Shock, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc.). Big Box PC games are awesome, but they take up so much space...

Big Box PC games are awesome, but they take up so much space... I guess it depends on the title. Tie Fighter is certainly a classic that is highly desired, probably anything Lucasarts, Sierra, etc. I'm trying to just pick up big box versions of some of my favorites - others I'm happy to just pickup CD only copies. Unfortunately I don't have any flea markets around me. Sometimes you'll see boxed pc games in thrifts but usually cd only. Game stores around here don't carry old pc games at all so it's either yard sales or ebay, which certainly isn't the best option, admittedly. zetastrike
Castlevania Chronicles. I got my tax return recently and was perusing ebay for anything that interested me. I searched for CC and (not) to my surprise, it's a $100+ game CIB. I could not justify it, no matter how much I want it so I bought a PSone LCD monitor for $40 instead. Rockman/Mega Man 8 for the Saturn is another one.
Disrupture
Any RPG above 20$. Why are RPGs often more expensive than other types of games ? I refuse to pay more than 20$. I'm probably a cheap bastard.

I searched for CC and (not) to my surprise, it's a $100+ game CIB. Is it really that much? I remember buying it new (still have it) and having to hunt for it. It got almost zero press and was released as a budget title so it probably wasn't available for long. The EB I finally tracked it down at only had one copy left and the employees were wanting it. I have a few rare-ish PS1 games that I'm thinking about selling off because I have a modded system that plays backups but I haven't gotten around to researching prices. Any RPG above 20$. Rhomaios
Because people keep them and replay them. Who has the time to replay RPGs?! OK, so I have a couple old favorites, but they're not that long compared to some of the more modern ones.

According to Konami, only 100k copies were printed and released in North America. Given that and the popularity of Castlevania, I'm not surprised it commands high prices today. I no longer have the game but I bought it for $30 when it was new. Great game.

Yeah it was a cheap budget title when it was released. Probably because it's just a port of an older game (the X68000 Castlevania) but it was well worth the $30 back then. I wonder why they didn't port more X68000 games to the PSX?
CGQuarterly
Man, I remember seeing Castlevania Chronicles at the store when it came out. I knew I should buy it, but just didn't get around to it before it disappeared. Luckily I was able to buy a nice CIB copy off of Axe several years ago for $30. Can't believe that it's a $100 game now. Prices these days are nuts.
darthkur
I refuse to pay "collectors" prices for anything. There's nothing I want bad enough to give some greedy jerk a huge profit for.
Rockin' Kat
32X -Spiderman ($300-$400- Yeah i know i'd regret this as soon as I paid for it. For $35 maybe. I don't even like superhero games. Wait, wait... what? I was not aware of this. I mean... I remember when someone commented suggesting envy in the thrifts find post a while back, but well... I didn't realize it was that big of a deal. Rockin' Kat
I'd say I'm not particularly inclined to pay "market value" for most games. I just don't see the point. I got so damn many games shopping at Thrift stores in the '00s that I just can't justify it. I don't need new games... so unless they show up in thrift stores I just don't care anymore. And I generally just do not find games at thrift stores like I used to anymore. So I don't buy much anymore.

Reaperman
Those NG:dev.team games. I know they cost about 1/4-1/2 what an MVS game used to cost new, which is a bargain, but they're still about $550 a pop. Some of these games have looked very good, but I have a lot of trouble justifying the cost. I'm pretty sure I'd have about the same level of fun with them that I have with 'pre-loved' mvs titles in the $20-60 range. Heck, they make top tier classic shmups like dodonpachi or radiant silvergun look cheap, even with the cabinet conversion costs. If anybody happens to know of an arcade in the New Orleans area with Razion in it (fat chance)--let me know, because I think it's easily worth a quarter or two. Just maybe not a couple thousand quarters... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2-9Pzyrl5I MUSHA. The cartridge alone is selling for $250 on Amazon. Ridiculous. I'll just play them in emulation. Before resorting to emulation, may want to give aliexpress a look. Wink-wink, nudge-nudge, say no more. schuwalker
Some notables for me: (I prefer boxed items) Atari 2600 Gremlins Frogger II Swordquest Waterworld - I remember Kaybee Toys blowing these out cheap too Colecovision Frogger II again NES I need 3 black box games to complete my collection: DK Math, Stack Up and Clu Clu - probably the most priciest too! Mega Man 1 - I dragged my feet on this one since I played ad nauseum from friends - sucks cause I own 2-5 :/
SuperDork3000
I have to disagree with the OP about PDS. PDS to me is one of the very few games that is still worth the $$$.
